第一节 (共10小题;每小题2.5 分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该
项涂黑。
A
A former teacher who went on to join the navy discovered the influence his small act of kindness had
on one student thanks to a chance meeting years later.
Sharing the story online, the man said while teaching science in 2014 and 2015, there was one girl
who sat at the front of the class and was “filled with typical middle school anxiety”. She was quiet and
“kept to herself”, but was always writing in a notebook during lessons.
He said, “I decided to look over her shoulder and see what she was writing.” I suck. I’m ugly. I’m
stupid. No one likes me. I hate me. etc. “Without thinking, I took the notebook from her and started writing
in it.” You’re great; you’re beautiful; you’re intelligent; you’re loved, “the opposite of everything she wrote,
then handed it back.” He said neither of them made a big deal of it at the time, but she slowly started
opening up to him, talking more and coming out of her shell in class.
Fast forward a few years, the teacher was in the navy, serving on the other side of the country. One day
when he talked to a woman they discovered they were from the same area. They realized he had taught at
the same school her cousin attended and she asked if he remembered teaching her. After telling the story
about the notebook, the woman replied, “It is you. She still has that notebook. She looks at it time to time to
get her through the tough times.”
In the story he wrote, “I was amazed. I almost started crying right there. Teachers always talk about
how rare it is to hear from students in the future about how they influenced them. I only taught for a few
years but I really tried and really cared. Even though that path didn’t turn out how I had planned, it’s
comforting to know that I did some good in that time.”
21. What attracted the attention of the teacher?
A. The girl was ugly and no one liked her.
B. The girl didn’t speak to her classmates in class.
C. The girl sitting at the front of the class was active.
D. The girl kept quiet and writing in her notebook during lessons.
22. What do the underlined words mean in paragraph 3?
A. No longer feeling inspired. B. No longer keeping silent.
C. No longer hiding in the shell. D. No longer writing in a notebook.
23. Why did the author feel amazed?
A. Because his former job did not meet his expectation.
B. Because he only taught for a few years but he succeeded.
C. Because he learned how he had influenced a former student.
D. Because he met the cousin of a student he taught a few years ago.
24. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Encouragement can make a great difference.
B. It’s unusual that a student lacks confidence.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C. Students usually don’t communicate with their teachers.
D. Almost all students have experienced middle school anxiety.

Dogs have a kind of sensor on the end of their nose that helps them recognize small changes in
temperature when other animals are nearby. The scientists say the discovery can help researchers better
understand how some animals identify their prey (猎物).
The scientists reported that the wet skin surface at the end of a dog’s nose is full of nerve endings.
“Dogs are able to sense the thermal radiation (热辐射) coming from warm bodies or weak thermal
radiation and they can also direct their behavior according to this signal”, wrote the researchers. “We tested
whether we can find an area in the brain that shows higher activity if they are exposed to a warmer object.”
Brain imaging tests showed increased brain activity when dogs were shown objects that were warmer than
their environment.
The study had two sets of experiments. In one, researchers used weak thermal radiation to train three
dogs. In the other, 13 dogs were given brain imaging tests to see how the brain reacted if they recognized
weak thermal radiation. Researchers were careful to note that all the animals were privately owned. The
owners gave “informed permission for their dogs to be used in the study”.
Researchers noted, “It is possible that other animals own a similar sense and that adds a new chapter to
the story of prey-predator (捕食者) relationships.” They wrote that in the gray wolf, the closest wild
relative of dogs, “the ability to sense the radiation from warm bodies would be advantageous for such
predators”.
25. What helps dogs sense other animals nearby?
A. The small change in temperature. B. The higher activity in their brain.
C. The nerve endings at the end of their noses. D. The close relations with gray wolves.
26. Why did researchers give brain imaging tests to the dogs?
A. To find out if dogs have thermal radiation.
B. To find out how dogs get away from danger.
C. To find out the relations between dogs and wolves.
D. To measure the dogs’ reaction to other warmer objects.
27. Where can you most probably read this passage?
A. In a travel magazine. B. In a science report. C. In an advertisement. D. In a health report.
C
It is surprising that eating three meals a day—breakfast, lunch and dinner—has been a custom only
since 1890. Before this time, English tradition only included two meals a day—breakfast and dinner.
In the 16th century, breakfast was a snack, with no fixed menu. Its only purpose was to break one’s fast
from the night. But 200 years later it had become a large meal, not just for the family, but for guests as well.
It was a social event. It began at 10 am and lasted until 1pm. Then breakfast began to be less popular. It
became, instead, a lighter meal and was taken at a much earlier hour. By 1850 it had been pushed back to 8
am and became a family meal.
Dinner, however, became larger later. In the 16th century it was eaten at 11 am. Years later, it was
moved to the early afternoon, then to 5 pm. By 1850 dinner time had reached 7 pm. Lunch is a recent idea.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so
forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to
constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes—even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten
breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, “If John didn’t have his
head tied on, he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his
forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn’t that he was not clever, as some critical people
tended to say, but just very, very absentminded.
One hot summer day, professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a threehour
train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a
secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning
to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while
Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town.”
“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I’ll write the name of
that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don’t forget where you put
it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was
astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

he forgot where he had left his children. Sensing something wrong, Mrs. Smith didn’t believe his words,
because whenever he told a lie, he would blink his eyes usually quickly. “Tell me the truth,” ordered his
wife. “As you told me, I didn’t forget the where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I
left our children!” whispered the professor, his voice trembling. “What a bad memory!” shouted the wife.
Hearing the cry, out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened. A fight between the
couple was about to start when the professor’s cell-phone began to ring. His friend, whose patience had
worn thin, phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a
bunch of people outside the house. Being afraid that he would make matters worse again, Mrs. Smith
decided to follow his husband, who then called a taxi. By the time she caught up with her husband, the
children were already back home safe and sound.
