When my son was a little child, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then turn to me to see if
he was hurt. If my face showed worry, he would burst out crying. If I maintained calmness, he would brush himself

Here was this human being who was counting on me to make sense of the world —not just how to tie his shoes or
recite the ABCs, but how to feel.
I’ve spent the past 30 years working in schools, and I’ve watched thousands of parents engage with educators
and with their children. Too often, I watch parents over functioning —taking away their kids’ confidence that
comes from struggling and persevering, and exhausting themselves in the process. We’re biologically wired to
prevent our children’s suffering. A parent’s first response is often to remove obstacles (障碍) from their child’s
path. This urge has led to pop-culture belief around pushy parenting styles, including the “Helicopter Parent,” who
flies in to rescue a child in crisis, and the “Snowplow Parent,” who flattens any obstacle in their child’s way.
In the 1960s, the psychologist Diana Baumrind described three parenting styles, which researchers eventually
expanded to four: authoritarian, permissive, uninvolved, and authoritative. Authoritarian parents make all decisions
for their children with little room for negotiation. Permissive parents avoid conflict by setting few boundaries.
Uninvolved parents are disconnected, providing minimal support. Authoritative parents allow for some flexibility,
combining clear expectations with the willingness to listen. Authoritative parents can be referred to as “Lighthouse
Parents”. Like a lighthouse that helps sailors avoid crashing into rocks, “Lighthouse Parents” provide firm
boundaries and emotional support while allowing their children the freedom to deal with their own challenges.
They demonstrate that they trust their kids to handle difficult situations independently.
All parents show up as authoritarian, permissive, uninvolved, or authoritative at different times, depending on
the situation. But remembering to put parenting in perspective, focusing on long-term outcomes over short-term
saves, can reduce some of the stress of parenting while also producing better outcomes for children.

As we know from living on the Suncoast, mangrove trees are all around us. They grow along almost every
coastline, provide habitat for fish and other wildlife, protect our homes from destructive storms and erosion,
maintain clean water, and fight climate change, thanks to their carbon-storing abilities.
Still, even with their immense beauty and vital importance to our community, mangroves are threatened in our
area. To stand up for the trees, Suncoast Waterkeeper has teamed up with Exspanse, Artificial Intelligence,
Dimensional Geomatics and New College of Florida on a mangrove mapping project, which will track mangrove
growth and conditions along northern Sarasota Bay, Palma Sola Bay, southern Tampa Bay, Terra Ceia Bay and the
Manatee River.
Training for the project starts this month, when Suncoast Waterkeeper and New College data science graduate
students will learn how to operate drones (无人机), using photogrammetry to measure and map the local
mangroves. (Photogrammetry is the act of obtaining precise measurements from photographs.)
The training, led by Dimensional Geomatics, will provide a standard operating procedure for community and
student-based mapping using drone imagery. Exspanse, based out of Longboat Key, will then provide its modeling
platform to New College data science students for the hands-on experience of building, training and employing
models using data from the project. Those models will show the extent and density (密度) of the surveyed
mangroves. Looking at the density of the trees over time will provide insight into the overall health of mangroves in
the area.
The mangrove mapping project comes at a time when protecting wetlands is significant, as Manatee County is
currently considering removing policies from its Comprehensive Plan and sections of the Land Development Code,
which will allow for destruction of local wetlands and wetland buffer areas. Suncoast Waterkeeper has put together
a petition (请愿书) which will be sent to the Manatee Board of County Commissioners. The hope is that public
knowledge about the project will bring a drive for the community to preserve and improve the condition of local
wetlands, because once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

Common house cats possess the ability to associate human words with images without hints or reward, a new
research has revealed. This discovery, published in Scientific Reports, throws new light on cats’ cognitive (认知)
abilities and their potential for understanding human language.
“Human babies rapidly learned random associations between words and objects at a young age,” the authors
wrote. “How did this ability to understand language evolve? It is not clear what selection pressures are related to
language comprehension ability, though some studies have shown that this word-object associative ability is not
constrained to humans but is present also in other species.”
The team designed an experiment to test cats’ ability to associate words and pictures. The study involved 31
adult house cats and adopt an approach similar to those used in baby language development research. In the
experiment, cats were shown short videos paired with meaningless words. These videos were played again and
again until the cats looked away. After a break, the same videos were shown, but with the spoken words completely
changed. Researchers carefully observed the cats’ reactions, focusing on gaze duration (凝视持续) and pupil
dilation (瞳孔扩张).
The results were striking: cats demonstrated longer gaze durations and pupil dilation when the word-image
pairings were switched, indicating confusion and a search for explanation. This behavior suggests that the cats had
formed associations between the spoken words and the images they saw, even without any rewards or training.
“It is noteworthy that cats made the picture-word association after only brief exposure,” the authors said.
“Most cats got used to the stimulus pairing after four trials, which means that they received only nine second
exposures in two trials for each picture-word pair. By comparison, trials involving human babies used at least four
20-second trials for a picture-word pair.”
But the study’s authors noted that it’s not clear why cats are able to form these associations so quickly and
suggest more work is needed to examine the question from both evolutionary and developments perspectives.
