(山东名校考试联盟2023-2024学年高二下学期期中考试英语试题)After spending his career as a chef and
working as the Vice President of Food and Beverage at FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek, Michigan,
Michael McFarlen saw how much food would get thrown away from the Casino’s restaurant every day.
Unfortunately, throwing away perfectly good food is extremely common within the restaurant industry. Yet it
was always something that bothered McFarlen about his work. Actions point, McFarlen decided to get involved
with the South Central Food Bank of Michigan Inc. to help give back to those in need. He then became the
president on the board and came up with a plan to open a restaurant in the community that would also help support
a food bank on the property.
In April of 2016, the FireKeepers Casino Hotel and its owners, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the
Potawatomi, bought Fire Station No. 4, a historic firehouse near down town Battle Creek that had been closed for
years and was set to be demolished. However, the group bought it before that happened and started to give the
historic building a new life.
Renovations on the property lasted about a year. Then on April 19, 2017, the restaurant, which they named The
Fire Hub, opened to the public for the first time. At the same time, the food bank, which they named the Kendall更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
Street Food bank, opened its door in the back of the building.
“Anytime you open a new restaurant, you just have to figure a way through that first year,” George said.
However, the first year of operation was beyond their expectations. Not only did the restaurant attract customers
because of its popularity and sustainability, but the food bank helped more people in the first year than they ever
imagined would need its services.
In total, about 375 to 400 households get help from the food bank every single month. “We’re able to cater to
people who are working, but still need a little help during the month,” McFarlen told Second Wave media. To better
fit the need of the majority of people using their services, the food bank was designed to look like a small market.
24. What bothered McFarlen as a chef?
A. A lack of cooks.
B. Waste of good food.
C. Involvement in food banks.
D. Shortage of food in some areas.
25. What might the underlined word “demolished” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Built up. B. Torn down. C. Broken up. D. Knocked off.
26. How did The Fire Hub go with its business?
A. It worked out well.
B. It had branches set up.
C. It stuck to good quality.
D. It didn’t last for a year.
27. What can best describe McFarlen?
A. Patient and careful.
B. Loving and devoted.
C. Enthusiastic and diligent.
D. Cautious and understanding.

(河北省唐山市十县一中联盟2023-2024学年高二下学期期中考试英语试题)Economic growth is often
considered as a sure way of increasing the well-being of people in low-income countries, and global surveys in
recent decades have supported this strategy by showing people in high-income countries tend to report higher levels
of life satisfaction than those in low-income countries. This strong connection might suggest that only in rich
societies can people be happy. However, a recent study conducted by ICTA-UAB and McGill University in Canada
suggests that there may be good reasons to question whether this link is universal.
While most global surveys gather thousands of responses from the citizens of industrial and urban societies,
they tend to ignore people in simple-and-tiny societies on the fringe, where social group has a limited number of
members and where the exchange of money plays a minimal role in everyday life with natives and local
communities depending directly on nature.
The research, published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS),
consisted of a survey of 2,966 people from local communities in 19 globally distributed sites. Only 64% of
surveyed households had any cash income. The results show that “surprisingly, many populations with very low更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
incomes report very high average levels of life satisfaction, with scores similar to those in wealthy countries,” says
Eric Galbraith, researcher at ICTA-UAB and McGill University and lead author of the study.
The average life satisfaction score across the studied simple-and-tiny societies was 6.8 on a range of 0-10.
Although not all societies reported high satisfaction levels, four of the sites reported average scores higher than 8,
despite many of these societies having suffered histories of neglect and control. The results are consistent with the
opinion that human societies can support very satisfactory lives for their members without necessarily requiring
high degrees of material wealth.
“While the reasons behind these findings remain unclear, the study provides valuable insights into how diverse
communities achieve satisfying lives. It offers hope that understanding these factors can help others improve their
well-being while addressing sustainability concerns.” Galbraith concludes.
28. What does the research focus on according to the passage?
A. The impact of cash income on locals’ well-being.
B. Income-satisfaction connection in industrial societies.
C. Economic growth’s concerns in low-income countries.
D. Relation between wealth and happiness across societies.
29. What does the underlined word “fringe” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Edge. B. Surface. C. Horizon. D. Scene.
30. What’s the purpose of the numbers listed in paragraph 3 and paragraph 4?
A. To indicate the research’s limitations.
B. To prove the reliability of the findings.
C. To emphasize high satisfaction scores.
D. To show the number of people surveyed.
31. What is Galbraith’s attitude toward the research?
A. Unconcerned. B. Unclear. C. Promising. D. Critical.

(浙江省浙里特色联盟2023-2024学年高二下学期4月期中英语试题)Europe’s series record-breaking hot
and dry summers have broken an easy link to climate change. Climate models show Europe warms faster than the
rest of the planet and the Arctic melting eventually causes massive ocean currents(洋流) and regional hot air
circulation patterns.
Arctic melting is adding roughly 6000 cubic kilometers of water or more to the ocean per decade. As that
fresh-water pours into the North Atlantic Ocean, it sits on top of heavier ocean salt-water and stops mixing. With
less heat being stirred in from below, the surface water gets colder than usual during the fall and winter months,
says Marilena Oltmanns, a climate scientist at the U.K. National Oceanography Centre. This phenomenon may
explain the so-called “cold blob”, an area of sea in the North Atlantic that NASA nodeling suggests is one of the
few spots on Earth getting colder.
To explore how the fresh water from Arctic ice might be affecting weather, Oltmanns and her colleagues
developed a way to combine data from satellites, and weather stations. They found when the freshwater-caused
cold blobs were more intense, the boundary was sharper, bringing more powerful westerly (向西的) winds. As a
result, the stronger westerlies move a warm ocean flow from roughly 45°N to 60°N. That shift can continue into the更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
next summer. And like a barrier, this warm current, curls up and around the British Isles, allowing a mass of hot,
dry air to camp out over Europe.
“The study convincingly puts meat on the bones of an expectation I and others have had for a while — that the
cold blob south of Greenland would influence North Atlantic weather patterns, as well as those downstream over
Europe,” says Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist at Woodwell Climate Research Center.
32. What does the underlined word “cold blob” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Climate models. B. Ocean current.
C. Cold water zone. D. Air circulation patterns.
33. What does paragraph 3 focus on?
A. Introduce the form of cold blob.
B. Present a phenomenon of climate changes in Europe.
C. Survey some data for the study.
D. Analyze the reason of hot and dry summer in Europe.
34. What is Jennifer’s attitude toward the study?
A. Approving. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
35. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Human activities change climate models.
B. Arctic melting contributes to European heat waves.
C. Climate changes have little impact on ocean currents.
D. Global warming results in the rise of the temperature.

(广东省部分学校2023-2024学年高二下学期5月联考英语试题)You’ve sized up the benefits of
volunteering, looked over your schedule, and decided you have both the time and desire to give back to your
community. ___36___ Here are some tips to find and get suitable volunteer opportunities in your area — or
farther afield.
Identify your values.
__37___ Make a list of the values that drive you, or the issues you care about, and then look for organizations
with complementary(互补的) missions and opportunities. For instance, if your primary motivation is to strengthen
social connections with peers, you might look to organizations such as school groups that require interaction with
other parents, or neighbors.
If you’re motivated to serve the less fortunate, you might target organizations that work with housing-insecure
populations, people with disabilities or members of historically disadvantaged groups. Motivations for volunteering
are as diverse as the volunteers harboring them. ___38___
Try to involve the whole family.
Many parents who volunteer turn giving back into a family affair. Community service is a great way to teach
kids the value of selflessness. __39___ Look for volunteer engagements that welcome people of all ages and
abilities, and schedule time for the whole family to participate —whether that means spending an afternoon picking
up trash on the side of the highway, or a week in a faraway flood zone.更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
___40___
Once you find a well-run organization that aligns with(符合) your availability, values, talents, and objectives,
work with your contact there to set a volunteer schedule that fits your life. If you’re exploring a frequent
engagement — say, a weekly or biweekly commitment —think carefully about how much time you can afford to
donate. It’s better to commit to shorter or less frequent volunteer hours than to take on an unmanageable workload.
A. What motivates you to give back?
B. Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
C. Are you ready to build a list of ideal places to volunteer?
D. It’s also an opportunity to spend more time with your family.
E. Don’t overthink the process of finding opportunities to volunteer.
F. Whatever your motivations are, there’s an organization out there that needs your help.
G. Now comes the most difficult part: finding volunteer opportunities that are right for you.

(湖南省常德市沅澧共同体2023-2024学年高二下学期期中考试英语试题)“It’s been potatoes all week,
mom! Can’t we go to the diner for a burger and an ice cream? That’s all I want for my birthday!” Eve’s 8-year-old
son Dylan threw his arms around her shoulders, looking at her hopefully. In her hear, she wanted to throw Dylan
the biggest birthday party ever, with balloons and a delicious cake with 8 beautiful candles on it. But in reality, Eve
could afford none of that. After being let go from the third temporary job and paying the overdue bills, she didn’t
have enough money left.
“Sorry, baby. I can’t afford meals...” Eve said sadly. Seeing tears in his mother’s eyes, Dylan quickly changed
his tone (语气). He’d seen her struggling to make ends meet and couldn’t stand hurting her. “Actually, mom, that
potato salad looks delicious! Can I have some more?” He asked her cheerfully.
After the humble meal, Eve did housework. Dylan took out an envelope hidden on his bookshelf. He’d
secretly saved a few dollars from the lunch money his mom had given him over the past few years. He counted the
money. “$28!” His eyes lit up. “I can get a good meal for c mom!”更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
Dylan slid out with the envelope and walked to the next block, where he saw exactly what he’d expected—the
mobile food truck! He’d seen it a few times and wondered why the place was always crowded. He waited until the
crowd waiting to buy food at the counter cleared away
“Sir! Please give me everything I can get for $28!” Dylan requested eagerly. But Martin, the owner of the food
truck, replied, “Sorry, kid. We’re out of everything today!”
Disappointed, Dylan was seated on the sidewalk, mumbling(咕哝): “It’s my birthday, but I can’t even treat her
to a nice meal. She does so much for me. I thought, for once, I would do something nice for her.” He kept talking
out loud to himself, giving into his urge to cry.
