“Imagine that your home is on fire. You’re allowed to save one thing. Your family and pets are safe, so
don’t worry about them. What is the most important thing you have? It can be any size.”
Linda Sue wrote a book The One Thing You’d Save. In it, a teacher named Ms. Chang invites her students
to think of the question above. She wants to challenge her class to name the most important thing to them.
Some students know the answer right away. Others come to their decisions more slowly. And some students
change their minds when they hear their classmates’ answers. As for the answers, some choose baseball cards
or toy animals. One picks a sweater that has been passed down for generations(代). Another chooses a box of
memories about …
Even Ms. Chang shares her own choice in the end. It is a really thought-provoking(引人深思的) question.
As the students are trying to answer it, they discover more about one another and themselves.
The book is a collection of poems. The writer tells the story through narrative(叙述的) poems. What
makes the book popular is that it leads people to think deeply.
The book uses black-and-white pictures to show the objects the students choose. When seeing the pictures,
people may think of scenes(场景) of their homes, the classroom and more.
The pictures offer wordless moments that encourage readers to think more before they move on.
Want to know what matters most to the students? Read this book.
1.What does Ms. Chang want to challenge her class to do?
2.Why is the book The One Thing You’d Save popular?
3.How does the book show the objects the students choose?
4.What’s the most important object to you? Why? Write 30 words or more.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in space? The most important thing to remember
about living in space is that there is no gravity. That means astronauts can’t do a lot of things that you do easily
in your daily life. For example, astronauts can’t pour themselves a cup of juice the way you can. Why? Because
gravity makes the juice pour from the bottle into your cup. Astronauts can’t rely(依靠) on gravity. Astronauts
can’t lie on beds and sleep the way you do because gravity is what holds you to your bed.
So how do astronauts live in space? Eating in space is like eating on earth in some ways. Food like rice
and mashed(糊状的) potatoes sticks to spoons, so it doesn’t float away. Other foods come in cans or
packages(盒). So they don’t float away, either.

There is no gravity in space, so astronauts do not have to sleep on beds or the floor. They can sleep
anywhere they want, and they can sleep in any position they want. They usually use sleeping bags. They
simply tie their sleeping bags to a wall, or a bed. That way, they don’t float around and bump(撞) into things
while they are sleeping.
Astronauts are very busy people. They have jobs to do, and they work very hard. But they also need to
relax sometimes. Astronauts usually get to talk to their families on a video call once a week. They also get to
stay in touch by email. Astronauts can bring chess and other games with them. Some even bring musical
instruments. Astronauts also watch movies and news programmes. Sometimes they talk to schools and news
reporters, too. Astronauts may have a lot of work to do, but they also find time for fun.

10.What’s the most important thing to remember about living in space?

of filial piety is a little different from ancient times. People don’t stay in one place for a lifetime. They might

The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling. This is true
in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia, the population is going down by about 100 people
every hour! In Poland the population is also falling because people are leaving to work in other countries.
One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle. All over Europe people, especially educated women,
have a different attitude to children from their parents. “I have one child and she is enough for me,” said
Galina, a doctor from Moscow. Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have children at
all. “I don’t want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years,” said 19-year-old student Hana
from Prague. Her opinion is typical of 18—24-year-old women everywhere in Europe.
In Poland, the population is going down for a different reason. A lot of people, usually aged between 20
and 30, are leaving the country to work abroad. Poland joined the European Union in 2005 and since then
more than half a million people have moved to Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy.
Many governments are now encouraging people to have larger families. In France women now receive
nearly $1000 a month for a year if they have a third child.

It has been said that good cooking is an art form. The fact is that it’s much more than that. It’s a way to
teach kids necessary skills in daily life. It invites kids to make connections to the outside world by asking,
“Where does our food come from? ” and “What is the history of this recipe (食谱)?” And it lets them use what
they are learning at school in their real life.
They also test the math skills of young cooks. Measuring ingredients (成分) is a common task in cooking
or baking. Cooking also brings science ideas to life. It is a perfect chance for them to learn that oil and water
don’t usually mix.
Besides the useful skills, cooking builds personality (个性). It encourages kids to work with others. It
also encourages them to be open to foods they might not haven’t tried. Peter, 12, had never eaten broccoli
before testing a recipe with broccoli (花菜) in it. His parents reported that he was so excited about this new
ingredient that he cooked it for his family the next night.
Failures in cooking are as important as the successes, because they help kids to understand that. _______
When Helen, an 11-year-old girl, took her cake out of the oven, she was disappointed to find that it was flat
as a board. But then she decided to work together with her father to find out what had gone wrong. Both of
them kept trying many times until they managed to make the most delicious cake ever in the end.
Of course, the best part of cooking with kids is the wonderful memories you make together in the kitchen.
This year, Tom and his family have already done a lot of holiday baking, such as their favorite chocolate-chip
cookies. They both felt excited even though the kitchen was in a mess.

To respect your decisions is a simple and powerful quality of a person but it’s seldom used. Few people
fully respect all his or her decisions, making decisions without really considering whether those decisions are
really needed, whether they are correct, or even whether they are possible to complete. Imagine how you will
feel if you are able to respect your decisions. You will be determined (坚定的), more creative, more satisfied,
and so on.
Although many methods could be written about how to respect your decisions and carry them out, the
simplest way to start is by deciding to decide and deciding to respect the decisions yon make! Yes, it’s as
simple as that.
Before making a decision, it is a good idea to notice how you feel about what you are considering. Do
you feel easy and relaxed about what you are thinking to do? If you decide to do something that doesn’t agree
with your inner feelings, you will certainly find it difficult to complete the task that you’ve decided to do. In
fact you may not even start it! By making sure that the decision agrees with your values first, you should have
no difficulties carrying it out.
Respecting your decisions is respecting yourself. If you seldom do what you say, then other people will
not trust you, nor will you trust yourself. Very quickly these make you tired, slow and lazy. At this point nearly
everything seems like hand work.
To respect your decisions is a great quality to have. By giving importance to your time and energy, you
will be able to make wise decisions. You will be known as someone who does what they say they will do. You
will be highly respected. You will have a powerful and clear mind. You’ll have one of the greatest attributes (特质)
needed for success.
51.What will you be like if you respect your own decisions according to Paragraph 1?
52.What should you do before making a decision according to Paragraph 3?
53.Why do others no longer trust you according to Paragraph 4 ?

Karlsson, a Swedish teacher at Beijing Union University (BUU), has lived in China for over 15 years.
The seeds (种子) of his China journey were sown when he joined in a program for East Asian studies at Lund
University in Sweden in 1997. Back then, cellphones and the Internet hadn’t yet come into wide use. Learning
Chinese meant using textbooks, heavy dictionaries and audio tapes. He would read the dictionary carefully for
hours to understand a one-page Chinese article.
“In those days, it was a real challenge,” he said.
In 2006, with a high score in the official Chinese language test, he won a scholarship for a five-week
summer program at Beijing Language and Culture University.
After finishing the study program, Karlsson was offered a Beijing-based job as a market researcher. In
2008, the year Beijing succeeded in hosting the Summer Olympic Games, he got married. In the next year, he
started to teach business at BUU.
Life in Beijing has been a wonderful adventure (异乎寻常的经历), especially as a witness to the great
achievements China has made. It has offered him many chances for personal growth. Today, thanks to high-
speed broadband and 5G, he can connect with students at BUU’s partner universities in Russia, Montenegro
or Mexico while riding on the Beijing subway.
“When you open your eyes to these great projects, it is impossible not to want to be part of them or at
least support them somehow,” he said.
Although he was busy on teaching days, Karlsson applied for a full-time scholarship at the University of
International Business and Economics in Beijing. In 2022, at 44 years old, he got his Ph.D.in economics. “I
am quite interested in blockchain technology, and I know that China is quickly becoming the leader in
blockchain applications outside the cryptocurrency space. So, I always write my articles in this area,” he
said.
“There is always time to follow your dreams unless you decide to give up,” he said. “Taking on seemingly
impossible challenges and also helping those around you are what makes life worth living.”

young and the market was too far.
Then she cheated(欺骗)her son and said, “I will soon be back. You stay at home and wait for me. If

Using live streaming is popular among the people aged 18 to 35. Even the teachers give lessons by live

begin a new term at that time, the most important thing for parents was to choose a lucky day for their children
to enter school. Next, parents would prepare some school things for their children, including desks, chairs and
four treasures of the study.
In ancient times, teachers were usually very knowledgeable local persons. Parents would prepare many
gifts, and then write a letter of invitation to ask a knowledgeable man to be their children’s teacher.
On the day their children entered school, parents would take them to take part in the First Writing
Ceremony. Before that, children would kowtow(叩头) to the statue of Confucius(孔子像) 9 times and then to
their teacher 3 times to show their deep respect(尊敬). During the ceremony, the teacher would put a red point
on the students’ forehead(前额) as it meant opening the wisdom eye. Children would also ring a certain bell
to start a new term. After that, they could finally sit down in their seats and begin to study. The First Writing
Ceremony was a very important ceremony for every student.
Every day, students would arrive at school earlier than their teacher, and kowtow to the statue of Confucius,
and then go back to the seats. Usually the teacher would give every student a new name, which was used for
future Imperial Examination(科举考试) .
Today, some schools are starting to hold an entrance ceremony like they did in ancient times. Students
put on traditional costumes and bow to the statue of Confucius and their teachers. This means that from this
moment, they take a step in the lifelong journey of learning.

One day, a group of tourists from Australia climbed a large rock in the Central Park of New York City.
They took pictures of one another with the high-rise buildings in the background. Like many other tourists,
they didn’t realize that high in a nearby tree, there was something more worthy of attention: an eagle-owl (雕鸮)
named Flaco.
Earlier that month, the bird Flaco made his great escape (逃跑) from the Central Park Zoo. The zookeepers
then tried several times to catch him but were unsuccessful. He seemed to be in no hurry to return to the zoo.
Olga Torrey, a photographer, has been photographing animals in city parks for 12 years. Since Flaco
escaped, Torrey has kept a close eye on him. She wondered if he would ever return to the zoo. “Once he gets
a taste of freedom, I’m not sure...” she said.
Still, each day spent outside puts Flaco in danger. He might accidentally hit windows and get injured
(受伤) while flying. Moreover, the eagle-owl lived his whole life in the zoo in the past. He may not be used
to finding food on his own. And if he made a meal of a rat (耗子), it might harm his health—the rat might
contain poison (含有毒物).
The zoo has had the workers carefully watch Flaco all the time, as they are worried about his safety. Has
Flaco eaten anything today? Has he got injured today?
Well, another day of watching has now begun.
81.Where did Flaco escape from?
82.What is Olga Torrey’s job?
83.If Flaco made a meal of a rat, what might happen to him?
84.Why do the zoo workers keep watching Flaco carefully?
85.Should we get Flaco back to the zoo? Why or why not?

Days pass by, it seems that daily life will become boring if nothing unexpected happens in our lives. The
sense of ceremony (仪式感) from special days keeps our feelings fresh and increases expectations of life.
Mrs Li has two children. Li Xin is her 15-year-old daughter. Li Lei is Li Xin’s brother. He’s older than
Li Xin.
A new semester (学期) should begin with a sense of ceremony. On the first day of new term, Li Xin sat
in front of the TV and watched the First Class, an educational program of CCTV. The First Class encouraged
her to study hard and be a useful person.
Another exciting thing to bring her the sense of ceremony is flag-raising ceremony. On Monday morning,
students were dressed in school uniforms and stood in a neat (整齐) line on the playground quietly. While Li
Xin was singing along with the national anthem (国歌) and watching the rising flag, the sense of national pride
and love for the country came into her heart.
Li Xin will leave junior high school this year. She expects the moving moment of graduation ceremony.
She will never forget the important people in her life who helped and supported her—her parents, her teachers
and her friends. She will consider what they’ve done for her and hope that they will be proud of her in the
future.
As for Li Lei, he can’t wait to grow up, as he can make his own decisions. He always asks a question,
“At what age do I really become an adult?” In China, the 18th birthday is a very important event for young
people because they can vote (投票) and learn to drive a car, so Mrs Li regards Li Lei’s birthday as a most
important event. She will have a big birthday party for her son. Li Lei realizes no matter how old he is,
becoming an adult is really about learning how to be independent and responsible.
Every moment to record a meaningful event brings a sense of ceremony and makes our lives colorful.
86.How old is Li Xin?
87.What did the First Class encourage Li Xin to do?
88.When did Li Xin take part in the flag-raising ceremony?
