训练题01【2023·北京·中考真题】
When considering the kind of experience that makes life better, most people first think that
happiness depends on experiencing pleasure: good food, good jobs, all the comforts that money can
buy. If we couldn’t have these, we might as well sit in front of the television on a quiet evening.
Pleasure is an important part of the quality of life, but by itself it doesn’t bring happiness. When
people think further about what makes a worthy life, they tend (倾向于) to move beyond pleasant
memories and begin to remember other events, other experiences that overlap (有重叠) pleasurable
ones but fall into a group with a separate name: enjoyment. Enjoyable events take place when people
have not only satisfied a need or met some earlier expectation, but also achieved something
unexpected.
Enjoyment is characterized by a sense of curiosity, of achievement. Playing a tennis game that
improves one’s ability is enjoyable, as is reading a book that shows things in a new light, as is having
a conversation that leads us to express ideas we didn’t know we had. None of these experiences may
be especially pleasurable when they are taking place, but when we think back on them afterwards,
we would say, “That really was fun” and wish they would happen again. After an enjoyable event
we know that we have changed, and grown.
Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different.
For example, everybody takes pleasure in eating. However, to enjoys food is more difficult — you
have to pay enough attention to a meal, so as to sense and tell its various tastes. As this example
suggests, we can experience pleasure without any psychic energy, while enjoyment happens only
as a result of full attention. A person can feel pleasure without any effort, as long as certain parts
in his brain are stimulated (刺激). But it’s impossible to enjoy a tennis game or a book without full
attention. It’s for this reason that pleasure does not last long, nor does it make us grow. Growth
requires full attention to goals that are new, that are relatively challenging.

Without enjoyment, life will go on, and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily on luck
and the external (外部的) environment. To achieve personal control over the quality of experience,
however, we need to learn how to build enjoyment into what happens day in, day out.
1.You will most probably experience enjoyment when you ________.
A.buy expensive shoes B.order a delicious meal
C.talk with friends for new ideas D.sit quietly in front of a television
2.What do you know about pleasure and enjoyment from the passage?
A.Enjoyment grows out of pleasure.
B.Pleasure and enjoyment come hand in hand.
C.Pleasurable experiences are part of enjoyable ones.
D.Some experiences provide both pleasure and enjoyment.
3.The words “psychic energy” in Paragraph 4 are closest in meaning to ________.
A.attention B.interest C.ability D.knowledge
4.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.feeling pleasure stops people from achieving growth
B.feeling enjoyment comes with achieving growth
C.a worthy life depends on luck and environment
D.pleasure is the key to a happy and worthy life
训练题02【2023·广东广州·中考真题】
Computer scientist Mary has an idea for a new robot to help her work with children. How
should it look? The robot should have arms to be able to lift things. And if it is going to communicate
with people, it will also need a face. Scientists believe that giving a robot a face can make it seem
more friendly. Humans would also like to pay more attention to robots with faces. But what kind?
For Mary, she wants to make sure that her new robot doesn’t look too much like a human. She
wants people to just treat it as a machine-person. If it looks more like a human than a machine, she
thinks users might find it a bit creepy and feel afraid. Mary also believes that robot faces don’t
need to look a lot like ours. Her research shows that we can enjoy communicating with robots
whether or not they look like humans, because our brains are able to look for faces. Just put two
circles on top of a robot’s body, and we will see a face.

Dave feels differently. He believes that although at first we might be afraid when seeing a robot
with a lifelike face, we may soon get used to it. If robots are going to work closely with humans,
they should look as much like us as possible. After all, faces are an important part of the way we
communicate.
To make his robots look as much like real people as possible, Dave invented a special skin
(皮肤) for their faces. With this skin, robots can show human-like expressions and appear to be
angry, sad, happy or surprised. Dave’s robots are also programmed to copy expressions. How? Just
imagine his robot is looking at you. The cameras in its eyes send pictures of your face to its central
computer!

训练题04【2023·内蒙古包头·中考真题】
An electronic book—known as an e-book—is the text and art of a book published in digital
form. Some say the convenience of a digital book beats the benefits of reading a real book, that is,
a book printed on paper. Is that true?
4关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
A famous writer once wrote, “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax. All
you need is a book!” Back then, of course, he meant a book printed on paper, but today that’s not
the only way to read one. People can choose to read a real book, or they can read an e-book on an
e-reader device (设备) or a computer. Many people like reading e-books because they are convenient
and easy to carry.
However, a real book can never be replaced. There is nothing better than the feel of a real book,
from the weight of it in your hand to the satisfaction of turning each page. It’s part of the experience of
reading—just like going to a library or bookstore and turning the pages of a book freely. Scrolling
(滚屏) through a device isn’t the same. And not every kind of book translates well to digital. Plus,
e-books can require expensive devices that need to be charged (充电), as well as Internet access to
download books. That’s not always possible or convenient. A printed book, however, doesn’t have
to be connected to be enjoyed. What’s more, when reading a real book, you can feel a pleasure of
the mind, which will help you get information and remember it more effectively. And it contributes
towards developing the communication skills and unlock our imagination.
In 2022, sales of e-books in the US totaled about $ 1 billion, while real books sales hit $ 9.1
billion. In a survey, 30% of Americans who read books chose e-books, while most still prefer real
books. Besides, research shows that understanding improves when people read books in print, rather
than in digital form.
1.Why do some people like reading e-books?
A.E-books provide more understanding.
B.E-books are convenient and easy to carry.
C.E-books increase printing costs and paper use.
D.E-books benefit people with reading difficulties.
2.What can we know from paragraph 3?
A.People are too busy to read a real book.
B.Children are into reading e-books nowadays.
C.It is enjoyable to read real books in a library.
D.All the real books can be translated well to digital.
3.What’s the purpose of listing numbers in the last paragraph?
A.To stress the importance of reading books.
B.To show the popularity of reading real books.

The 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China points out
the importance of reading and calls on people to read more books, so
shared bookhouses have appeared in many places. Reading has become a
trend in our country.
A reading campaign (行动) took place in Shenyang in April, 2023. Many people took part in
it. Li Hong, a girl from a junior high school, said, “My mother and I took part in the campaign
because both of us like reading. Books are our necessary furniture in our house. I know a lot about
Chinese classic (经典的) works. Reading makes my life colourful and will change my dream into
reality (现实).”
Reading is one thing, but knowing how to read and what to read is another.
There are mainly three kinds of reading: recreational reading, study-type reading and survey
reading. Recreational reading can bring you much fun. You can read at a relaxed speed. Study-type
reading usually needs you to read the text very carefully to understand the ideas and details. Survey
reading is a way of reading fast to get the main idea or find the information you need.
What kind of books should you read? Emerson, a great writer and thinker, had three rules:
never read a book that is not a year old; never read any but famous books; never read a book you
don’t like.
Good books can lift you to a higher plane (境界). Whatever you read, read with interest, with
the whole mind. Try to be a best reader. If you are getting the most out of a book, you will do things
more confidently. Reading is rewarding (有益的)!

Exams cause anxiety(焦虑). The silence of the hall; the sound of the clock; the proud look of
the person sitting at the neighboring desk who has finished 15 minutes early. So there is little surprise
that those who worry about taking exams do worse than those who do not.
According to a recent research by Maria Theobald, perhaps, it is not the pressure(压力) of the
exam hall that causes the problem. It is the pressure of review.
Dr. Theobald worked with 309 students who were preparing for a very important final exam.
During the 100 days before that, the students used an app which showed them old exam questions
and recorded their performance. They also sat a mock exam(模拟考) 40 days before the real exam.
To know their levels of anxiety, students were given 1-5 points to questions every day.
Dr. Theobald found that anxiety on the day of the test did not predict exam performance at all.
What predicted it was the level of knowledge a student showed in the mock and the earlier digital-
learning activities. Those who perform ed well in these also did well in the real exam. And what
7关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
actually affected students were high levels of anxiety during the weeks before the real exam took
place. The greater a student’s anxiety in the days before the exam, the less knowledge he or she got
during that time.
To reduce the anxiety, Dr. Theobald has his advice for students. First, they can raise their
confidence in their own abilities. Second, they can reduce the importance of the test by telling
themselves that, though it is important, it is not a life-or-death situation.
1.Which of the following affects exam results most according to paragraph 1-2?
A.The sound of the clock. B.The silence of the hall.
C.The pressure of the review. D.The proud look from the neighboring desk.
2.Paragraph 4 mainly talks about the ________ of the research.
A.process B.results C.reasons D.importance
3.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The test. B.The advice. C.The anxiety. D.The situation.
4.What can we infer(推断) from the text?
A.The more mock exams you take, the better results you will get.
B.Students should pay less attention to the test to reduce the anxiety.
C.If you have more knowledge before exams, you will have less anxiety in exams.
D.Anxiety during review affects exam performance more than that during the exams.
5.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Can you perform well in exams? B.What may cause you exam anxiety?
C.How can you reduce exam anxiety? D.Does anxiety affect exam performance?

Have you ever been in a class when all the students are kept in at lunchtime just because two
or three students won’t stop talking? The teacher gets irate and suddenly everyone is in trouble
instead of just the students who caused the problem. This is called “collective (集体的) punishment”
and many students in Australia want it stopped in schools.
Some say that collective punishment teaches young people that their behavior has an effect on
other people. As most of us want to be liked and “fit in” (顺应), all students then feel that they have
to behave well.
8关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
Others say that this type of punishment causes students to feel angry with the students who are
not behaving well. It destroys trust and good relationships between classmates.
But collective punishment can harm students who want to do the right thing. Teachers at my
school say that some students become too disappointed to come to school. They are unhappy because
their class gets class detention (课后留校) most days and is known as the “bad group”.
A parent at this same school believes that this type of punishment is useful because it helps
teachers to know which students are not behaving well. She thinks that when a class knows they
may be given a detention, the students who were doing the wrong thing will own up (承认).
Our school’s psychologist (心理学家), Miriam Koch, says that students who have learning
difficulties and keep making trouble in classrooms often have poor social skills. Her opinion is that
collective punishment can keep these students away from their classmates. She believes that it is
best for teachers to use group rewards (奖励) and clear rules for students behavior to help develop
teamwork.
1.What does the underlined word “irate” mean?
A.Silent. B.Angry. C.Lost. D.Worried.
2.In what way is collective punishment good?
A.It gets students to work harder.
B.It brings students hearts closer.
C.It helps keep order in the classroom.
D.It helps form good teacher-student relationships.
3.How can collective punishment harm students who want to do the right thing?
A.They feel unloved. B.They copy bad behavior.
C.They hate to go to school. D.They avoid seeing people
4.Why does the parent find collective punishment useful?
A.It helps teachers to find troublemakers.
B.It makes students tell on one another.
C.It allows students to know one another better.
D.It gets teachers to help badly-behaved students.
5.What does Miriam Koch think of troublemakers in a classroom?
A.They want to get rewards.
B.They have good social skills.

Nowadays, experts call on high school students to read as many literary classics (文学名著)
as possible. What do you think of it?
Linda: We don’t have enough life experiences, so we may have difficulty understanding the
deeper classics. But this shouldn’t be a reason to give up reading classics. As Francis Bacon said,
“Reading makes a full man; conference (谈话) a ready man; and writing an exact man.”
Curry: Classics are the treasures our ancestors left us. We should read them and pass them
down. As the old Chinese saying goes, “One who is filled with knowledge always behaves well.”
Classics can open up our minds and develop our interest in culture.
Frank: Without background and life experiences, students can’t understand what writers
want to express in their classics. While reading, some students mainly pay attention to words and
expressions rather than the hidden ideas. For this reason, reading classics might be a waste of
time.
Mary: On the one hand, not all classics are suitable (合适的) for all students, as there are
many difficult expressions and deep ideas. On the other hand, the special writing styles make it
difficult for students to understand. So they won’t probably choose them.
1.Who agrees with the idea of reading literary classics?
A.Linda & Curry. B.Linda & Mary. C.Curry & Frank. D.Frank & Mary.
2.What does Curry think of literary classics?
A.They improve students’ reading skills.
B.They develop students’ interest in culture.
C.They help students learn more words.
D.They can change students’ personalities (个性).
3.Frank thinks classics are not worth reading because ________.
A.the writers live in different countries
B.students prefer to read about life experiences
C.students might pay more attention to words and expressions

5.What does the passage talk about?
A.Why literary classics become popular in high schools.
B.Whether high school students should read literary classics.
C.Why high school students should read literary classics.
D.How high schools should help students improve reading skills.

Do you compare yourself to other people? Perhaps your best friend receives something you
really want, or you’re not allowed to go to a concert but your brother or sister is. Even though
comparisons are common and can sometimes be helpful, focusing(专注) on your own progress is
important for your happiness.
“We often compare ourselves to others who are doing better or not as well as ourselves.” says
Dr. Jack. “But I suggest comparing yourself to your past self and your future self. This can make
you feel proud of what you’ve achieved and excited about what you might do. Focusing on your
own purposes is more worthwhile than always trying to come out on top.”
Comparing yourself to those around you is natural and we often do it without realizing it. It
can help us to be clear about our achievements and to form friendships with new people who have
similar interests. However, it’s important to remember that nobody is perfect in real life. It’s also
important to take note of how the comparison is making you feel. “If you begin to feel quite low,
focus on your own strengths.” says Jack. In other words, you can ask yourself questions like “What
can I do well in?”, which can help you trust yourself.
Maybe here you are wondering “What if all my friends are better than me?”. Dr. White says
that jealousy(妒忌) is not bad but focusing on bettering your own work can help you feel just as
successful. He also mentions that learning to celebrate your friends’ success can not only help to
cheer your friends up but also help you feel good. It will encourage you to build each other up.

When an Italian man went to work with a mask (口罩) to protect himself from the
COVID-19, he was criticized (批评) by his workmates for causing panic (恐慌). But in China and
other Asian countries, almost everyone wears a mask during outbreaks (爆发). Why do the East
and the West have different ideas about wearing masks?
In the West, people wear masks only when they get sick. People see masks as a tool to protect
sick people and stop disease (疾病) from spreading, so healthy people don’t need to wear them. If
a person goes out with a mask, other people may look at him like a virus (病毒) spreader. Even
their friends tried to stay away from them. Some Western people say wearing a mask in public
makes them feel “worried”, “shy”, and “afraid of being looked at differently”. But as the number
of COVID-19 cases (病例) keeps growing around the world, more and more healthy people are
starting to wear masks to protect themselves, people in the West are changing their ideas.
In Asian countries like China and Japan, wearing masks is common. In 1910, Chinese doctor
Wu Liande invented the modern medical mask. During the 2003 SARS, people used masks widely

on. Many pop stars in Asia also wear masks to protect their privacy (隐私) when they go out. This
cultural background has made it easier for people in the East to wear masks during the COVID-19
outbreak.

A.He caused panic. B.He was too worried to work.
C.He didn’t want to go to work. D.He wanted to protect himself.
