Let’s take a tour of the colourful world of shows.
Beijing opera is a type of musical theatre. It joins singing, dance, acrobatics, and martialarts together. It has a lot
of music and is called opera, but the actors tell the stories in dialogues. The stories are taken from Chinese history,
tales and literature. When an actor appears, the audience know quickly if the character is smart, stupid or bad
because of his face paint. For example, a red face is loyal. A lot of make-up makes the audience see the actor’s
mouth, eyes, and face from faraway.
Wayang kulit is from Indonesia and is the oldest form of puppet theatre in the world. The stories are legends
and folk stories. The puppets are all different characteristics. The biggest ones are the bad guys, and the heroes are
usually thin puppets with long pointed noses, Wayang kulit performances are still very popular in Indonesia.Ballet is a form of dance. It started in Italy in the 15th century. In early ballet, dancers wore masks and heavy
costumes, and they were all male. The first female dancer appeared about 200 years later. Both male and female
ballet dancers have to be in very good shape and strong. One ballet performance can take 5,000 hours of
practice. And in one performance a male dancer often has to lift a lot of female dancers. Two famous story ballets
are Swan Lake and Peter Pan.
Street theatre is really fun, and it is the oldest form of theatre. It was performed outdoors on the streets of
ancient Egypt. Now you can see it in shopping centres and on street corners in many cities of the world. The
performers do all kinds of things like juggling, dancing, and singing. Everyone can stop to watch it. And it’s

A team of Chinese scientists and climbers reached the top of Qomolangma at about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May
23. It’s the second time since last year for the science expedition (考察) team to reach the top.
The team was made up of 13 Chinese scientists and climbers. They set off at a height of 8,300 metres for the top
at about 3 a.m. After more than 8 hours of hard climbing, they arrived at the 8,830-metre weather station.
After fixing steel ropes, changing batteries and putting in wind speed and direction sensors (传感器), they
finished improving the world’s highest automated(自动化的) weather station, which was setup by Chinese scientists
last year. Besides, they collected ice-snow samples on the top for further research.
The weather station records temperatures, wind speeds and other key data for studying climate change. Climate
scientists have found that global warming has had a large influence on the glacier number on the Qinghai-Tibet
Plateau (青藏高原).
Over the last fifty years, the temperature on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has risen about 0.5℃ every ten years.
Studying the ecosystem(生态系统) of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau will help scientists have a better understanding of
the influence of climate change, and help scientists and the government make proper decisions.
Since the mid-20th century, China has sent different research expedition teams to Qomolangma. But because oflimited resources and technologies, many key scientific questions are still unanswered, such as whether global
warming can melt the ice at the top of Qomolangma, and how ecosystem can change as height increases to

When Mark walked empty-handed up the sand, the sun was shining brightly. The watching children were as
disappointed as he was. They looked at each other and spoke softly so he couldn’t hear.
“Is that all?”
“Is he giving up?”

Down he dived. Down. Down. Down. Lungs bursting, ears popping, eyes painful. Nearly there. Pressure(压
力), Pressure. He reached out his hands. Reaching. Reaching. But it was no good. He couldn’t make it. Only an arm’s
length away, but he couldn’t reach the crayfish.
Up he went. Tired, burning, disappointed, annoyed. Floating on the surface, he told himself off.
“You hurried too much. Take your time. Prepare yourself. Don’t dive until everything feels right,” he spoke to
himself calmly, and he felt the confidence building up inside him. “I can do it. I can do it.” He felt good. It was going
to be a good dive. Breathing deeply, relaxing, concentrating. Three more breaths. One, two, three. Down!

Imagine you are walking through deep snow. As you walk, you leave footprints where you’ve been. That’s what
happens when using technology, such as computers, mobile phones and tablets. You leave your digital footprint and
it will never disappear.
Here are reasons why your digital footprint should matter to you.
How people see you
Of course, you have nothing to hide, but if people get information about you, they might judge you from the
information you have left online. For example, you make a bad joke online. Years later, it’s found by the university
you are applying to, and they don’t think it’s funny. Maybe they decide you are not the “right” kind of person for
them,
Your private informationNot everything can be shared with everyone. For example, you might share your school reports with your
parents, but keep them secret to your e-friends. If you share them on the Internet, they will not be a secret anymore.
Therefore, to protect your privacy(隐私), remember to put out less information online.
Keeping your money safe
There are plenty of people looking at information about you, and some of them want to steal from you. So you
shouldn’t write bank details, card numbers or passwords in emails or text messages.
Overall, the message is: No one can go online without leaving his digital footprint—but with care, you can
control it.
