Growing up in a poor African American neighborhood, Carl Allamby and his five brothers and sisters were
raised by their stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. He faced low expectations and
numerous barriers to pursuing his dream. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led
him on a premed (医学预科班) path, so he set aside thoughts of becoming a doctor. He had started it at the age of 19, working alone out of a rented bay in a friend’s garage. Over the years, it had
grown into two shops with 11 employees, but Allamby had become anxious, longing for something more. So at the
age of 34, he decided to go for his bachelor’s degree in business management. After taking classes part-time over
the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his degree. Biology class awakened a childhood
dream within himself.
With the support of his wife and family, he soon decided to skip business school in favor of the science classes
he’d need for a second career as a health-care worker. Becoming a doctor when he would be approaching the age of
50 was clearly crazy. He would instead become a nurse or a physician assistant like his wife, he thought. But
Allamby’s chemistry professor encouraged him to pursue his dream to be a doctor.
And so in 2015, Allamby started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, at the age of 47, Carl
Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD.Now Allamby is a second-year resident.
“How many people can do something so brand-new and have so much stimulation and responsibility at such a
late stage in their life?” he says, “I am told that I shouldn’t be a doctor. Whether it’s because of my age, my race,
my upbringing, or my past career, these are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.”
24.What made Carl fail to become a doctor when he was young?
A.No social barriers.
B.Parents’ being jobless.
C.High expectations from his parents.
D.No advanced science classes in his school.
25.What awakened Carl’s childhood dream?
A.Chemistry class. B.Business class.
C.Biology class. D.His professor’s encouragement.
26.Why did Carl skip business school?
A.To attend science classes. B.To manage his shops.
C.To take part-time classes. D.To support his family.
27.Which of the following can best describe Carl?
A.Caring. B.Determined C.Honest. D.Good-tempered.

Transport is undergoing a massive transformation so it can meet society’s demands for a low- carbon
economy. Introducing electric vehicles (EV) and declining gasoline use are helping, but zero-carbon hydrogen canspeed up both the transition (转变) and long-term decarbonization of transport.
In the US, transportation produces the largest share of all greenhouse gas emissions (排放) in the economy at
29%, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. More than 90% of transport fuel is petrol based, but if
more vehicles used hydrogen, emissions of this kind would plummet.
However, hydrogen is not considered an ideal replacement for gasoline as an engine fuel for cars because it is
harder to store safely. And while fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) that turn hydrogen into electricity can compete
with EV performance-and even out-compete them on range and refill time, extra energy is needed to produce the
hydrogen needed for fuel. Also, finding investment for storage, pipelines and fuel stations is still a challenge for
many nations.
Currently, governments worldwide are backing green hydrogen projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in
heavy industries like freight (货运), steel, and energy storage. But hydrogen transport will need rapid production
methods to create the fuel needed for the world’s road fleet.
Thankfully, research is advancing all the time. Nanoscale (纳米级的) thin films are applied to improving the
chemical process to rapidly harvest hydrogen from the seawater. The same technology has been successfully used
in solar power devices with higher efficiency-to-cost rates. Since hydrogen is the most abundant element in the
universe and as seawater makes up about 96% of all water on Earth, there is a virtually limitless supply.
Even wastewater and solid waste can create green hydrogen. Researchers at Princeton University are using
sunlight to separate hydrogen from industrial wastewater. Chemical plants that currently face high costs for
cleaning wastewater could transform it into clean hydrogen supplies.
28.What does the underlined word “plummet” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Stop. B.Decrease. C.Continue. D.Disappear.
29.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Ways of storing hydrogen safely.
B.Benefits of fuel cell electric vehicles.
C.Challenges of using hydrogen as car fuel.
D.Differences between gasoline and hydrogen.
30.What makes it more efficient to get hydrogen from the ocean?
A.The application of solar power devices.
B.The method of identifying water elements.
C.The invention. of the water transport system.D.The use of the nanoscale thin-film technology.
31.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Clean Energy Hydrogen Ready to Take Off
B.Traditional Fuels Bound to Reach a Dead End
C.How We Can Generate Energy from Hydrogen
D.What the Future of Transportation May Be Like

A study claims that wearable devices could also be used by cows on the farms of the future. Researchers from
Southwest Jiaotong University in China have developed a smartwatch that can be used to monitor cows’ health,
reproductivity and location.
“Monitoring environmental and health information of cattle can help prevent diseases and improve the
efficiency of pasture breeding (草场培育) and management,” said Zutao Zhang, co-author of the study. In the
study, the team set out to develop a wearable device that could be used to collect vital information on cows. “This
information can include oxygen concentration, air temperature, amount of exercise, reproductive cycles, disease,
and milk production,” explained Mr Zhang.
The smart devices are worn around the cows’ necks and ankles. They contain a unique motion enhancement
mechanism (运动增强机制) to strengthen small movements the cows make. Once captured, the kinetic energy (动
能) from the cow’s movements is stored in a battery and used to power the device. This means the device doesn’t
need to be charged like a traditional smartwatch.
“There is a large amount of kinetic energy that can be harvested in cattle’s daily movements, such as walking,
running, and even neck movement,” said co-author Yajia Pan. To put the device to the test, the researchers tested it
on human participants. The tests revealed that even a light jog was enough to power temperature measurements on
the device.
Beyond cows, the researchers say that the smart device could have a range of application in humans. This
includes in sports monitoring, healthcare, smart homes, and wireless sensor networks. “Kinetic energy is
everywhere in the environment—leaves falling in the wind, the movement of people and animals—these
phenomena all contain a lot of kinetic energy,” said Zhang. “We shouldn’t let this energy go to waste.”
32.Why did the team develop the wearable device?
A.To monitor cows’ environmental effects.
B.To gather vital information on cows.C.To locate where cows reproduce.
D.To improve the quality of milk.
33.How is the device different from other smartwatches?
A.It can be applied to many human related fields.
B.It should be worn around the cow’s necks and ankles.
C.It makes use of the energy from the cow’s movements.
D.It takes less time to be charged than traditional smartwatches.
34.What do we know about kinetic energy from the last two paragraphs?
A.It is easy to harvest. B.It is simple to test.
C.It is huge in amount. D.It is widely applied.
35.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Wearable Devices in the Future Farm
B.The Kinetic Energy in Natural World
C.The Quality Meat of the Super Cows
D.Wide Applications of a New Invention

mistakes and her inevitable slips; and to let her know how precious and important she is.____36____Only, in this
case, you’re the parent and the child.
____37____Tell yourself, “I love you and appreciate who you are.” When you do something well, give
yourself a pat on the back. Say, “Great job! I’m so proud of you.” When you’re struggling or feeling low, be
supportive by saying, “I’m here for you. You’re not alone,”
Take good care of yourself. A loving parent would make sure you eat right and get plenty of rest sleep, fresh
air and exercise. ____38____ Practicing good self-care is an essential part of this process.
Set healthy boundaries with others. Let people know what you want and don’t want. Tell them what’s okay for
you and what’s not. If you have a friend who’s always late and you end up waiting for her and feeling annoyed, tellher how you feel.____39____
Be concerned about yourself.____40____You’re human and you’re going to make mistakes. Don’t punish or
blame yourself. Reassure yourself. Comfort yourself. Accept yourself unconditionally.

Hector stood in the front of his fifth-grade classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Room Five
Geography Bee. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector’s turn. If he answered his question
correctly, he would be the Room Five champion.
“Where did I put that second sheet of questions?” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of
papers on his messy desk. Mr. Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long
history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay.“ said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long
time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil.” Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the
answer.Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and
thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory.
As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn’t want to leave. Then he saw Mr.
Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped
out but Mr. Adler was unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope
were the words “Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers”. Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope.
Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He’d cheated and whatever he did now, he
couldn’t change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning’s questions too?” Hector thought. “He’d
take away my Room Five victory for sure.” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned
into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a loss what to do.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
