The decades between 1880 and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 were a complex, energetic period
of artistic questioning, searching, risk-taking and innovation.
The exhibition celebrates the achievements of three giants of the period: Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and
Paul Gauguin and follows the influences they had on younger generations of French artists and on wider circles ofartists across Europe.
With over a hundred works by artists ranging from Picasso to Mondrian and a selection of sculptures by artists
including Rodin and Camille Claudel, the exhibition follows the creation of a new, modern art, free of convention,
taking in Expressionism and Abstraction. ‘The exhibition includes some of the most famous works of art created
during these decades. Important loans come to the exhibition from institutions and private collections worldwide.

The first traffic lights in the United States were installed because of an increase in traveller on the road in the
1920s. Worried about accidents, towns and cities installed traffic towers to help the flow of cars. Officers manned
the towers, using whistles and red, green and yellow lights to indicate to drivers when they should stop and go.
Due to the absence of effective traffic signal systems on some streets, it caused risks at intersections. Then,
William Potts created the first tricolour, four-directional traffic signal. The very first four-directional traffic light
was installed at Woodward Avenue and Fort. But throughout the country, there were still a lot of systems for traffic
lights and patterns in place. Since this could end up causing more problems for drivers, the Federal HighwayAdministration set uniform standards in 1935for all road signs, pavement markings and traffic signals, requiring
them to all use red, yellow and green light indicators.
Red is the colour with the longest wavelength; that means that as it travels through air molecules, it gets
diffused(扩散)less than other colour, so it can be seen from a greater distance. Yellow has a shorter wavelength than
red but a longer wavelength than green. This means that red is visible the furthest away, yellow in the middle and
green the least distance away—a helpful advanced warning for needing to slow or stop. But this could be a
coincidence. Red meaning stop originated with train warning lights, and it’s not clear whether that was chosen
based on wavelength, contrast against green nature or natural association of red with things like blood. It could be a
combination of all three!
Back in the 1900s, some stop signs were yellow because it was too hard to see a red sign in a poorly lit area.
Eventually, highly reflective materials were developed, and red stop signs were born. Since yellow can be seen well
at all times of the day, school zones, some traffic signs and school buses continue to be painted the colour.

Childhood obesity (肥胖) isn’t only caused by over eating. A lot of environmental and lifestyle variables—
such as skipping breakfast, irregular sleeping patterns and less sleep time—also contribute towards this disturbing
trend, says a new study.
According to the study conducted by University College London’s researchers, children who skip breakfast
and sleep less are more likely to have bigger appetites and tend to consume more energy-rich foods throughout the
day, leading to excessive weight gain. The team also found that smoking habit of mothers during pregnancy (怀孕)
is also one of the contributory factors for a child being overweight.
Interestingly, these results challenge the conventional belief that over-eating is main cause of increasing
obesity rates among children. In addition, factors like watching too much television, consuming sugary drinks,
eating fruits and introducing solid food sooner don’t certainly lead to childhood obesity.
The researchers used data from a multi-disciplinary research project that tracks the lives: of children from
19,244 families across the UK, born from September 2020 to January. 2021. After analyzing the data, they found
that in UK, 83.3%of new babies had non-overweight and stable BMI (身体质量指数). Only 1% had a mildly
increasing BMI, while another 2.5% tended to have a sharply increasing BMI. However, due to poor lifestyle
choices and environmental factors, 6% of the children were already overweight when they were three years old.
The study authors concluded that modifying (更改) a child’s environment early in life can go a long way in
reducing their chances of gaining abnormal weight, which can also affect their health in later years.
The researchers recommended that dealing with the childhood obesity calls for a mixture of preventive
actions, for example, creating awareness among the families around the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and also
instructing and supporting parents throughout the pregnancy, and even before and after it.

When you see a slim tower topping out at 14 feet 6 inches (4.4m) and made up of 208 decks of cards, you
may exclaim it’s so incredible!
The tower’s architect, Bryan Berg, is an expert card builder, holding the world’s record for the tallest structure
built entirely of paper cards. He’s built houses, stadiums, capitols, and castles. There’s no glue, tape or clips (别针).
How can he make them stand firm? He begins by balancing four cards to form a box with arms sticking out, which
forms a grid (网格). Then he repeats the grid over and over, expanding outward, to build a solid base. After that,
Bryan lays cards around the edge and then across the top to make the floor for the next story of the building.
Interestingly enough, Bryan did not get the idea from any of the physical books. Instead, he discovered the
unique way to build solid structures using a trick from nature. The secret is plant cells. Plant cells have hard walls
and fit together tightly to form a grid that helps leaves and stems to keep their shape. Bees use the same kind of
pattern to create honeycombs. Bryan borrowed this idea to invent repeating grids of card cells.
Out of curiosity, people who come to see the card buildings sometimes push and poke (戳刺) to see if they
have clips inside, but find they don’t! Once, when Bryan built a card castle at Disney World, birds kept trying to
land on it. A squirrel managed to take down one wall and did plenty of damage inside. But, amazingly, the castle
didn’t collapse.
When it’s time to take down a card house, Bryan likes to blow them apart with a leaf blower. Is he ever sad to
do it? Bryan admits it’s sometimes painful to see his structures fall. But he always knows one thing: “What goes up
must come down — even card houses. They wouldn’t be so special if they were permanent. I also learn a lot from
taking them apart — the destruction shows me where the weak points are. That is what my next stronger buildings
really need.”
