When Emanuel received an email from Professor Richard English at Queen’s University, who encouraged him
to apply for a PhD in Politics in Belfast, it was a pinch-me moment Emanuel never thought would be possible.
After all, just a few short years ago, he was living on the streets, couch-surfing at friends’ houses and weeding
gardens to make ends meet. Now, one of the world’s leading political academics was preparing to welcome him to
Queen’s University over 4,000 miles away.
Emanuel never knew who his father was and his mom was mentally ill when she gave birth to him, so the
hospital took him off her and he was unofficially adopted for the first few years of his life. What followed was a
childhood with uncertainty as Emanuel was passed between the adoption system and family members.
Through his high school and community college years, he moved from house to house, living with friends at
times and living on the streets at others.
Determined to change all that despite his rocky start in life, Emanuel involved himself in school — doing
everything he could to earn extra tuition (学费) money in his spare time. But getting accepted into university was
scarcely possible because a person like him couldn’t get a regular student loan.
Fortunately, the government backed him, having created a policy allowing disadvantaged persons to access
funding for higher education. He graduated from the University of the West Indies with a 1st Class Honors degree
and went on to do his Masters.Emanuel knows that his story could have been very different.
“I discovered Professor Richard English online and sent him an email honestly, not thinking he would reply
and to my surprise, he did. I applied for the highly competitive Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme in
order to fund my research at Queen’s. When I was told I was successful, my whole world changed.”

One morning, my four-year-old daughter and I were getting ready to leave the house when she suddenly yelled
“Idiot!” right at me. As I processed the word, I noticed she was upset. Tears streamed down her face as she half
whispered and half yelled “you are an IDIOT Mama.” Total silence followed as we looked at each other. We were
staring at each other for so long, and I nearly forgot to breathe out, and in again. Idiot. How could my daughter call
me an idiot?
There are many behaviors that really push parents’ buttons. Disrespectful, rude words tend to top the list. The
wrong response to such rude remarks is often a serious warning. But I didn’t offer any serious remarks.
I realized that my daughter’s intention wasn’t to disrespect me. She was expressing the disconnection. And
punishment doesn’t solve disconnection. It creates more of it. Her choice of word said it all. She was annoyed. She
sensed the stress. I needed to hear her. I was being careless. I was the one being rude to her.
So, why punish our children when they need guidance? We must know the words we use matter, and become
our children’s words too. The words include those we use to handle emotional overload. Idiot is a word I regretfully
must admit to using when I’m extremely annoyed. Not at my children, but yes, they have heard me say it. So,instead of punishing my daughter for misbehavior, I chose to focus on her real message: Idiot means that “Mom,
you are stressing me out!”.
No blame. No punishment for honest feelings. No criticizing her choice of words. Just focus on our
relationship. I admitted my ignoring her, and we hugged and kissed each other. I walked into her play school with
interest and was ready to see all her current projects.
Don’t be afraid to focus on your relationship, to show kindness, and to model forgiveness. Don’t be afraid to
look beyond misbehavior, find the true message and trust the power of connection.

The next time San Francisco residents stop a taxi, they may step into a car with no one behind the wheel.
Driverless taxis are now allowed to come on the city’s streets. On June 2, 2022, Cruise, a division of General
Motors (GM), was approved to charge for rides in its self-driving cars, becoming the first company allowed to
operate commercial driverless cars in a major US city.
Though Cruise is regarding it as a big win, its self-driving cars aren’t totally free to run on the streets of San
Francisco as they please. Cruise vehicles will be limited to transporting passengers in less crowded areas of the city
between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The speed limit is 30 mph. They are also not allowed to operate in heavy rain or fog.
The rules are meant to reduce any injuries or accidents.
Cruise plans to launch the service gradually with a team of just 30 cars. The first robotaxis will be improvedversions of GM’s Chevrolet Bolt. However, the company is seeking approval to get its custom-built Cruise Origin
on public roads. The driverless electric vehicle has no wheels or pedals (踏板) and can attain highway speeds. The
car consists mostly of a siting space, where passengers can face each other.
Cruise’s ability to obtain the commercial permit to operate is a big step forward. However, the company still
has to convince passengers that its technology is safe. Many remain concerned about safety. A 2021 survey by the
American Automobile Association found that 74 percent of Americans are afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle.
It remains to be seen how the new driverless taxi experiment will play out in San Francisco. But based on the
vast number of companies that are racing to develop self-driving vehicles and the tens of thousands of people on
waitlists for robotaxi rides, the Cruise pioneering program is at least set for popularity, if not success.

To better work for the community, our class organized a voluntary activity on last Saturday. They carried out a
