Arnold Adoff is an American poet. He published more than 30 books in his life. Arnold Adoff was born on
July 16, 1935 in New York. But his parents were both Russian. He studied in the City College of New York. And
he met and married Virginia Hamilton when he was 25.
When talking about his work, Arnold Adoff often used the word “music”. “Writing a poem,” he said, “is
making music with words.” Arnold Adoff began writing for kids because he wanted to make a change in American
society. He wanted to open a child’s imagination.

Poem writing
Last month, Li Hua went with his brother to an interesting show of poems. Li Hua saw poems
everywhere in the room, and he even found a poem in the glass when he drank water! The poems

club at his school. He borrowed a lot of books about poems from the club and the library. He practised
writing poems every day. He hoped he could send his poems to a show one day.

Jack London is a famous American writer. He was born on January 12, 1876 in California. His family was very
poor, so Jack had to leave school to make money. He worked hard at many different jobs. In 1897, he went to
Alaska to find gold. He found ideas there for his books and stories. He started to write novels after returning
home. His novels were successful and he became rich and famous when he was 30. His book, the Call of the
Wild is known all over the world. It tells a story of a large dog in the frozen north.
