When the pool near Paris where he worked as a lifeguard was closed due to poor economic conditions,
Guillaume Pop took jobs at various other pools that were almost empty. At one pool there was a small waterslide
(水滑道), which gave the 22-year-old former competitive swimmer an idea: he would make a TikTok video in
which he pretended to be a“professional waterslide tester”.
Shooting down a slide in hard hat and hi-viz vest (防护衣) or smiling broadly in cool shapes to the music,
Pop soon became a social media hit. He was hired to “test” slides and other facilities at water parks, swimming
pools and campsites all over France. Today, he has more than half a million followers on TikTok and his own real-life waterslide-testing business. No longer working as a lifeguard, he travels the country checking the condition of
waterslides, trying them out to determine how fun they are and creating amusing videos to attract customers.
“First of all, I check it without water, to make sure it’s in an acceptable state,” explains Pop, who must keep
up-to-date on water park regulations. If he finds a waterslide needs work — for example, if there are bumpy
joints, which can hurt sliders — management will bring in a specialist repairer. “After that, I test it with water,”
Pop says.
Then he moves on to the fun, promotional aspect. Sometimes he takes over a leisure park and invites social
media influencers to enjoy it too. In 2022, he took 25 influencers to O’Gliss Park, an enormous water park on the
Atlantic coast.
Pop estimates he’s tested around 700 French waterslides and is now eyeing water parks abroad, such as
Switzerland, Portugal and Spain, where he has been testing slides during the winter. “It’s the best job in the
world,” declares Pop, whose videos have received 80 million views. “I’m not behind a desk. I’m active and
outside in the sun. And I build a positive relationship with customers. In fact, all the children tell me they want to
be a waterslide tester!”
24.What motivated Guillaume Pop to make TikTok videos about waterslides?
A.His interest in lifeguarding techniques.
B.His passion for competitive swimming.
C.A suggestion from his friends to become a social media hit.
D.The loss of his lifeguard job due to poor economic conditions.
25.How did Guillaume Pop’s career change after gaining popularity on TikTok?
A.He began working as a manager at a water park.
B.He started a real-life waterslide-testing business.
C.He joined a professional swimming team in Paris.
D.He became a lifeguard at multiple pools in France.
26.Why does Guillaume Pop describe his job as“the best job in the world”?
A.He gains a high salary and job security.
B.He tests over 700 waterslides in France.
C.He gets to travel extensively to different countries.
D.He enjoys working outdoors and interacting with customers.
27.Which is a suitable title for the text?
A.Guillaume Pop: The TikTok Star of Water ParksB.Guillaume Pop: From Lifeguard to a Traveler in Paris
C.Guillaume Pop’s Journey: From Pool Closures to Waterslide Adventures
D.Guillaume Pop’s Journey: Creating Waves in Swimming Pools

For many people, the cruelest part of daily life is the transition between wakefulness and sleep. When you
should be sleeping, you want to be awake; when you should be awake, you want to stay asleep. It is easy to regard
sleep as a torment: hard to attain and then hard to give up, day after day.
It is no major revelation to most people that enough sleep improves well-being. One recent study of more
than 30,000 UK residents found that people who increased their quantity of sleep over a four-year period got
about the same happiness benefits as they would have from eight weeks of treatment, or from winning up to
$280,000 in a lottery. Well-rested people are more social and have more positive emotional experiences with co-
workers and romantic partners. Sleep loss, however, lowers happiness by degrading emotional-memory recall and
encouraging a negative mindset, which results in depressive working atmosphere and poor interpersonal
relationship.
If all of this seems obvious, why don’t we sleep more? Physical conditions, poor sleep habits, work, stress,
and young kids are all common barriers to proper sleep. However, another barrier comes purely from within, when
we simply put off going to bed because we are doing other things that seem more important at night, but that we
regret when it’s time to get up. It is what scholars call “bedtime procrastination (拖延)”. Bedtime procrastination
seems illogical, but the explanation is fairly straightforward. It happens when a person bears some deep resistance
to being “told” what to do, especially in an area as personal and fundamental as when to go to bed. It is likely
because she hates being told what to do in other parts of her life, and she fights back by fully using her own
authority and staying up.
28.What does the underlined word “torment” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Enjoyment. B.Suffering. C.Entertainment. D.Exercise.
29.How is the second paragraph developed?
A.By using quotes.
B.By giving a definition.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By providing explanations.
30.What may cause bedtime procrastination?
A.A crying baby.B.Pressure from work.
C.Drinking too much coffee.
D.Unwillingness to follow routines.
31.Which column of a news website may the text be taken from?
A.Health. B.Education. C.Technology. D.Economy.

Language is the most important tool for human communication and is essential for life in our society. Dr.
Sabrina Turker from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig says, “Despite
a lot of research on how the brain processes language, we still don’t know much about how language is organized
in the human brain. Most of what we know comes from small studies with only a few subjects, and these findings
have not been confirmed in other studies.” This meta-analysis aims to help change that.
Based on many neuroscientific (神经科学的) experiments using brain imaging techniques and involving
thousands of subjects, this analysis gives us a deeper understanding of how the brain organizes language. By
combining results from different studies, researchers can see which parts of the brain are active during various
language tasks. This approach helps us understand the basic principles of how the brain processes language.
The researchers not only studied language as a process in general, but also clearly addressed subordinate
(从属的) processes: the meaning of language at the level of words and sentences (semantics); the phonetic
structure of language (phonology); grammar and the arrangement of linguistic elements (syntax); the phonetic
structure of language at sentence level, including melody, intonation and rhythm (prosody).
Besides the well-known language areas in the left side of the brain, the researchers discovered that parts of
the brain below the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum also play an important role in language processes.
Gesa Hartwigsen, Professor of Cognitive and Biological Psychology at Leipzig University, said, “Our
findings may serve future studies involving language recovery after brain injury, for example caused by stroke.
And they could help to improve models of language processing.”
32.What does the study focus on?
A.Why language is important.
B.How the brain organises language.
C.How the brain influences a person.
D.Why we control the language abilities.
33.How did researchers draw their conclusion?
A.By measuring subjects’ brain activity.B.By analyzing quantities of experimental data.
C.By building a database for many experiments.
D.By conducting interviews with hundreds of subjects.
34.What do we know about the study from paragraph 3?
A.It is simple. B.It is limited.
C.It is specific. D.It is confusing.
35.What is the scientific value of the study?
A.Treating brain injury. B.Finding the cause of stroke.
C.Helping language recovery. D.Improving language teaching.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We love our pets. In fact, for most people they are more than me re pets and become more like family
members. It is likely then that their owners, at some point, are going to want photographs of their furry friends.
However, pet photography presents its own special problems. 36 If you’re thinking of trying pet
photography, here are a few pointers to get you started.
Find out about your subject’s personality and habits. Where does it nod off if the sun is out? What is its
favourite toy? 37 It’s also worth spending a little time getting to know the animal yourself. Cats, dogs,
horses, they all have personality, and you need to ensure they are comfortable being around you, and you around
them.
38 If the pet is comfortable with you, and if it isn’t too nervous, fill the frame with the pet’s face.
Get the eyes nice and sharp. Just like humans, this is a natural point of focus, although focusing on the nose or
mouth of a dog or cat can also make for an interesting image in its own right.
See the world from pets’ perspective. If you photograph a pet while you’re standing up, all you’re going to
see is the top of their head and their backs, not what you want for a portrait. Get down to their eye level. Try pre-
focusing your camera and just holding it at ground level so you can look up at the pet. 39 .
Bring a flash with the owner’s permission. While greeting or playing with a new pet, fire a couple of test
flashes away from them to see their reaction. In daylight particularly, they never seem to mind the flash at all.
40 .
A.Think about getting in close to your subject.
B.It’s worth a try just for a new angle on things.
C.Animals can be unpredictable, lazy, aggressive and excitable.D.A good photograph focuses on the subject and not the background.
E.If they do mind, then stick with natural light and use a white reflector.
F.The more you shoot, the greater your chances of hitting that perfect shot!
G.Take time to chat with the owner and observe your subject to gain some insight.

WINNING
Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. He had never lost a contest, but
that didn’t calm him. Tom glanced at the other rockets. They all had their own problems. One rocket, however,
caught his eye. It’s perfect in every aspect. His critical eye detected that this rocket could beat his. It belonged to a
newcomer — ED.Suddenly, Ed turned, his sight pausing on Tom’s rocket. Admiring it for a while, he then gave
Tom a thumbs- up with a smile.
The announcer began to explain the competition. Tom barely listened; he couldn’t help but repeatedly look
over to Ed’s rocket. Suddenly his heart did a leap. Tom knew that Ed had no chance of winning. He had noticed
that as Ed lifted his rocket to place it on the launch pad, one fin (翼) had caught against something on the ground,
pulling it away from the rocket and making it loose. But Ed hadn’t noticed. He glanced back at Tom and gaveanother thumbs- up sign. Tom felt sorry but decided he wasn’t going to des troy a sure win by saying anything.
Anyway, it was up to Ed to keep checking his rocket.
The contest began. Most gained respectable heights but none exceeded (超过)1,000 feet. Tom watched, but
the problems the others had didn’t make him feel good. For the first time the looks on their faces bothered him.
Tom thought about the loose fin of Ed’s rocket, wondering if he should say something. He was lost in
thought and didn’t hear his name being called. When it was repeated, it shocked him. He moved to the pad. With a
shaky hand, he connected the wires to the igniter (点火器). Stepping back to the firing board, he took a deep
breath and pushed the button. His rocket climbed wonderfully to a height of 1,100 feet. As he ran out into the field
to pick up his rocket, he heard Ed’s name being announced.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Ed lifted his rocket and approached the launch area.
