I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the
lettuce stub(残余部分)in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed mug and placed the
stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning, I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of
hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts
where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the
mug(大杯),tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here? Lettuce or hope?
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before
committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was
enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce:
alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were
all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which
is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The
only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in anddecay(腐败),or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the
way. I can only hope to be as brave.
24.Why did the author soak the stub in water?
A.To hope that it would grow. B.To decorate the nice mug.
C.To conduct an experiment. D.To remove his bad mood.
25.What is the first sign of life in the author’s eyes?
A.The remaining stub. B.The small leaf.
C.The disappearing cuts. D.The tiny root threads.
26.How would the author feel if in the lettuce’s situation?
A.Hesitant. B.Fearless. C.Aimless. D.Annoyed.
27.What can we learn from Monty?
A.Enjoying your own life to the fullest.
B.Believing in yourself when in trouble.
C.Never being afraid to restart yourself.
D.Giving freedom to the heart in a way.

Cities are difficult to navigate (导航) at the best of times, but for people with disabilities they can be like
courses with hurdles and bring inconvenience to disabled people.
A UK national travel survey found that adults with mobility difficulties took 39% fewer trips than those with
no disability in 2017. Yet that could change as devices and cities grow smarter. Assistive tech is playing a big role
in the transformation. The global value of the industry is expected to increase from $14 billion in 2015 to $30.8
billion in 2024, according to Zion Market Research.
One of the things that could transform lives is a smart walking stick designed by engineers from Young Guru
Academy (YGA) in Turkey. The WeWalk stick has a sensor that detects hurdles above chest level and uses
vibrations (振动) to warn the user. It can be paired with a smartphone to help navigation, and is connected with a
voice assistant and Google Maps.
Ceylan, who has been blind since birth, says that connecting the stick to the Internet of Things and smart city
solutions makes it user-friendly. “As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station I don’t know which is my
exit ... I don’t know which bus is approaching ... which stores are around me. That kind of information can be
provided with the WeWalk,” he says.
“The smart walking stick is really an exciting initiative that will make a huge difference to some people,”
says Anna Lawson, the director of the Center for Disability Studies at Leeds University in the United Kingdom.
“But they are very expensive ... they’re not going to be available to the vast majority of disabled people,” sheadded.
Bryan Matthews, a lecturer at the Institute for Transport Studies at the University of Leeds, shares the
concerns about cost. He says there should also be a focus on inclusive design, and anything that helps people
navigate their environment is positive.
28.What does “that” in the second paragraph refer to?
A.The survey that compared adults’ mobility.
B.The smart industry that is booming.
C.The fact that the disabled traveled less.
D.The role that the assistive tech plays.
29.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The working principles of the WeWalk stick.
B.The introduction of the WeWalk stick inventors.
C.The transformation caused by the WeWalk stick.
D.The benefits brought about by the WeWalk stick.
30.What’s the purpose of quoting Ceylan?
A.To show the value of smart tech.
B.To urge more attention to the blind.
C.To increase the potential market share.
D.To encourage tech research and development.
31.What is the disadvantage of the WeWalk stick?
A.Confusing instructions. B.Poor navigation.
C.Inclusive designs. D.High prices.

The measure of a good night’s sleep is usually based on two things—the amount of time spent sleeping and
the quality of that sleep. But now researchers say there is a third thing that matters even more than the other two
when it comes to keeping good sleep habits, and that is having a regular bedtime.
A study has found that going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day have an important effect on
one’s health. Adults who stick to a regular bedtime tend to weigh less, have lower blood sugar and reduced risk of
heart disease.
The researchers studied the sleeping habits of 2,000 adults with an average age of 69. They found that people
with greater irregularity (无规律) in their sleep patterns tended to go to sleep later at night, feel sleepy and sleep
more during the day, and experienced reduced light exposure. These people were also more likely to be stressed.
Among the three kinds of sleep problems, sleep regularity was the most strongly associated with health.Of course, there are many people for whom this may be impossible, such as night-shift workers or those with
late-night duty. But for those who don’t have mandatory (强制的) reasons to stay up late, they should make an
effort to go to bed at the same time every night. Skip the late afternoon coffee. Get off the phone. Try this
calculator to figure out the best bedtime.
As Matthew Walker, a scientist, wrote, “The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life.” Surely that’s
reasonable enough to go to bed on time.
32.What can we infer from the research?
A.People feel more stressed when they grow older. B.The old often have less sleep.
C.Adults enjoy sleeping late. D.Regular bedtime does good to our health.
33.Which of the following influences health most?
A.Reduced light exposure. B.Sleep regularity.
C.Sleeping during the day. D.Sleeping later at night.
34.According to the author, those who don’t have to stay up late should ______.
A.Avoid the late-night duty. B.Skip the late-night coffee.
C.Get off the phone while working. D.Try to sleep at the same time each night.
35.What’s the best title for the text?
A.The Importance of Sleep B.Ways to Have a Good Sleep
C.Regular Bedtime for Your Health D.The Suitable Time for Sleep

The emergency doctor stood at the foot of my husband’s hospital bed, holding the test results and a diagnosis
— Acute Myeloid Leukemia (骨髓白血病). He said to my husband, “Well move you to the leukemia floor. You’ll
be here at least a month. ”
A month! My mind started spinning. My mom had fought breast cancer. My aunt had lung cancer. Both had
died. But neither had been in hospital for a month! Exactly how bad was my husband’s diagnosis? And how were
we going to struggle for a month? It was March. The end of a school year was approaching. My days with my
high school students were limited. How could I prepare four weeks of lesson plans and hand them over to a
substitute teacher? A month! Could we afford being in the hospital that long? Our insurance was good, but we’d
still have to pay our part of the medical expenses. My meals wouldn’t be covered, and parking was so expensive!
My head couldn’t do the math. I drove home, filled with countless worries. Even though the parking pass would
be a significant discount, I couldn’t help but feel bothered by the cost throughout the drive.
The next morning, I packed the car with everything needed for our hospital stay and headed to school to see
my students. Because we live in a small community, they would have heard about my husband’s diagnosis. I
would assure them that my husband would be fine, and that I would be fine, too. I’d encourage them to be their
best selves for the substitute-and for me—while I was on family leave.
When I entered my classroom, the chatter stopped. I put on a smile and continued to my podium (讲台).
Sitting on top was a green envelope with “Mrs. Sargent” written on it. I looked over the frames of my glasses at
twenty-eight faces, some smiling, some trying to resist. “What is this?” I asked. I picked up the envelope, and
continued, “You guys…”注意:(1)续写词数应为150 左右;
(2)开头已给出。
Paragraph 1:
When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out — fives, tens, twenties.

W: It’s very close to work, isn’t it?
M: Yes, it is. I always walk to work — even when it rains! The crowdedness on the bus is a deal breaker for me.
W: I usually drive my car. It takes so long!
M: How long does it take?
W: Oh, it takes about 20 minutes.
M: That is a long time. Well, have some cake. I usually bake something at the weekend. I like having sweets in the

W: This is delicious! You’re a wonderful cook!
M: Thank you, it’s nothing really. Do you cook at home?
W: I never cook. I’m just hopeless. My husband, David, usually does all the cooking.
M: Do you often go out to eat?
W: Yes, when he doesn’t have time to cook, we go out to eat somewhere.
M: There are some wonderful restaurants in the city that are not that expensive.

attitude affect others. Are people generally happy or sad around you?(每个人都有缺点,但你可以集中精力改

你周围的人通常是快乐的还是悲伤的,空后提到回答这些问题并分析与他们之间的互动可以帮助您发现

67. When I opened the envelope, coins and dollar bills fell out-fives, tens, twenties. At that moment, my throat
tightened with emotion and I understood the meaning behind their excited faces. An overwhelming sense of pride
from them washed over me. Should I take it? My brain was spinning fast. Seeing the money that the students
raised, I couldn’t help but wonder another question: How had these kids collected so much money? I could even
imagine the countless hours they had spent working odd jobs, determined to save every penny to help me.
Therefore, deep within my heart. there was a firm voice. “I can’t take it ?”
As an acult in the room, I felt guilty and unwilling to accept these teenagers hard-earned money, but I decided
to accept it. I tightly held up the cash and my voice trembled as I told them how I was bothered by the cost of
parking. “Kids, you just covered my parking cost for the month.” But that’s not the real reason why I accepted it.
With tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes, I hugged each student tightly. More important than the envelope
was the kindness in their hearts and the lesson they had taught themselves: how wonderful it feels to meet
someone’s needs and to make a difference. Through their small act of kindness, these teenagers have shown me
their growth and they are not ignorant children, but young individuals with wisdom and kindness in their hearts.
