China's Artificial Sun EAST Marks 20 Years
China's artificial sun, a machine named EAST, has been running for 20 years. It stands on Science Island in Hefei, Anhui. On September 28, 2006, EAST produced its first discharge of hot plasma lasting nearly 3 seconds. That success made China the first country in the world to build a fully superconducting tokamak.
During the past 20 years, EAST has reached several important milestones. It pushed the running time of high-confinement plasma from 60 seconds to 100 and then to over 400 seconds. In early 2025, it set a world record by keeping plasma at 100 million degrees Celsius for 1,066 seconds. The machine has carried out more than 160,000 experiments.
EAST is now preparing the way for a new device called BEST. Its park was handed over just before the National Day holiday, and engineers began testing the lights. Song Yuntao, a leader at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, said his team will try to finish it by 2027. One day, fusion power may light millions of homes.

First Winter Migratory Birds Reach Poyang Lake
Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China, has welcomed its first wintermigratory birds of the season. The lake lies in Jiangxi Province and is one of Asia's most important wintering grounds for migratory birds.
On September 29, patrol workers recorded several species arriving at the reserve. At the Wannian station, about 500 Baikal teals gathered on the shallow water of Lianhu Township, their white eyebrows shining in the early light. At the Duchang station, four spoonbills were seen searching for food with their long, spoon-shaped beaks, standing peacefully beside grey herons and great egrets. Around Dahuchi, cormorants swam across the water while harriers circled overhead, and the number of bird species at the lake kept growing.
As the weather turns colder, thousands more birds will fly south to spend the winter here. The reserve asks visitors to keep a safe distance and avoid disturbing the birds.

Year's Largest Last Quarter Moon to Shine on October 3
Sky watchers are in for a treat on October 3, when the largest last quarter moon of 2026 will appear in the night sky. At last quarter, we see exactly half of its bright side, a shape like a mirror image of the letter D.
Astronomers explain that the moon's changing shapes follow a fixed cycle called a synodic month, which lasts about 29.53 days. There will be thirteen last quarter moons in 2026, and according to astronomer Yang Jing, the one on October 3 comes closer to Earth than any other. The smallest one of the year appeared on March 11.
Unlike a full moon, which can be enjoyed in the early evening, a last quarter moon rises after midnight and is best seen before dawn. Experts suggest choosing a spot with a wide view of the east and little light pollution. With binoculars, the slanted sunlight throws long shadows across the moon, making its craters stand out clearly.
