A Forest Keeper Protects 1,000-Year-Old Trees

In Jiange County, Sichuan, an old road called Cuiyun Corridor is lined with cypress trees. Some of them are more than 1,000 years old. People there work hard to protect them.

Zhang Yufu is a forest keeper. Every morning, he walks a long way on the mountain road. He checks the old trees for pests and dangers. He asks visitors not to bring fire into the forest. Once, he followed a visitor for two or three kilometers. He wanted the visitor to hand in a lighter. "The old trees are like our family," he says. "We must protect them like our eyes."

With everyone's care, the thousand-year trees will stay green for a long time.

Years ago, there were only about 1,100 wildpandas in China. Now there are about 1,900. In 2021, China set up the Giant Panda National Park. It connects 13 separated panda groups so they can meet each other. The panda's level has also changed from "endangered" to "vulnerable".

Pandas are also stars. Panpan, Jingjing and Bing Dwen Dwen were Olympic mascots based on pandas. In November, panda fans from around the world will meet in Chengdu for a big panda meeting.

China has opened its first regular passengerroute to Iceland. On October 26, flight CA807 left Beijing and flew for more than 15 hours. It stopped in Copenhagen, Denmark, and then landed in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. The airport greeted the plane with a "water salute".

The new route makes travel much easier. Passengers can buy one ticket and check their bags all the way through. Before, they had to buy two separate tickets, which cost more and took longer.

Iceland hopes more Chinese visitors will come in winter. Fresh seafood from Iceland can now reach China within 24 hours. The new route will bring the two countries closer.
