Most people celebrate their 80th birthday with cake and candles. Betty Kellenberger celebrated hers by making history.
The Michigan native recently became the oldest woman ever to hike the entire Appalachian Trail—a surprising 2,200-mile difficult walk that stretches across 14 states, with climbs and descents equal to climbing Mount Everest 16 times. “You see incredible parts of our country, things that you wouldn’t see otherwise,” said Kellenberger. “So much wildlife. It’s just beautiful.”
Kellenberger grew up on a farm in Howell, where her fascination with the famous footpath began. For years, she dreamed about hiking the trail from Georgia to Maine, but life never allowed for the six-month commitment it required. Eventually, she realized that nothing was holding her back—so in 2024, she took her first steps on what would become the adventure of a lifetime.
The journey wasn’t easy. Along the way, Kellenberger faced dehydration(脱水), falls, and even Lyme disease. It was also interrupted by Hurricane Helene, which tore through the eastern United States and forced her to pause at the southern Virginia border. Determined to finish, she rerouted north and continued in the spring of 2025, braving New England’s rocky terrain until the very end. When she finally reached the end of the trail, the emotions hit hard. “So you’re a basket case,” she laughed. “You have so many emotions because you’re excited about finishing, I was really looking forward to saying,” I am done. “But you also know you’re going to miss this big time. You’re not going to have what you have out on that trail. That peace, the tranquility.”
She described Maine and New Hampshire as the toughest stretches—but also the most rewarding. Now, after months of hiking through rain, heat, and hardship, Kellenberger says she’s in the best shape of her life.
24. What history did 80-year-old Kellenberger make?
A. She lived as long a life as 80 years.B. She spent a lifetime exploring.
C. She climbed Mount Everest all alone.D. She made a long tough journey.
25. What does the third paragraph indicate?
A. The hiking was her long-held dream.B. She was a natural sports enthusiast.
C. Her celebration was one like no other.D. Her difficult life killed her pursuit.
26. What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A. Her success was incomparable.B. It was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
C. The experience blew her away.D. She hadn’t expected the outcome.
27. Which word best describes Kellenberger from her episode?
A. Self-centered.B. Emotional.C. Long-lived.D. Adventurous.

[2026浙江Z20+名校联盟第二次联考] Does math leave you anxious? If so, don’t worry. Ben Orlin is here to help. This US-based teacher wants to reduce the anxiety math triggers.
He believes that many people who struggle with math simply weren’t taught it correctly. In many classrooms, teachers present math as a memory exercise. But to Orlin, math really is a system of communication. It’s a way to share ideas. And it all starts with assigning numbers to the world.
In his 2024 book Math for English Majors, Orlin builds on Galileo’s idea of math as a universal language, but he takes it further. He suggests we treat math not as a “foreign” language, but as an everyday tool to interpret the world.
Orlin suggests considering numbers as nouns and explains that some mathematical features correspond to verbs and even grammar. What in math corresponds to verbs? Verbs typically signify action. Could operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and so on, stand in for verbs? Stretch your imagination. And operations are not just a set of instructions, he suggests, but also a grammatical structure for math. Consider the plus sign in “2+3”. More than just a symbol, it can function as a conjunction (the “and” in “2 and 3”) or a preposition (the “with” in “2 with 3”).
Negative numbers can be likened to a linguistic(语言的)trick, Orlin argues. Consider phrases like “300 feet below sea level” from a mathematical perspective. The altitude could be represented as “-300 feet”. The minus symbol could be mapped to prepositions, such as “below”, “before”, “backward” and “down”. Similarly, the plus symbol could be mapped to their opposites—“above”, “after”, “forward” and “up”. To make negative numbers more accessible, Orlin suggests that educators connect them to concrete concepts like debt. That’s a term often associated with negative dollars.
It’s still early days to determine whether math could indeed serve as a universal language Moreover, for Tom Crawford, a math professor at the University of Oxford, it’s hardly the only way to help kids appreciate math. “But to me, any idea aimed at presenting math differently and making it more accessible is an excellent idea,” Crawford says.
28. Which of the following best describes Ben Orlin according to the text?
A. Cautious and theoretical.B. Loyal and patriotic.
C. Innovative and intellectual.D. Ambitious and conservative.
29. According to Ben Orlin’s logic, which of the following statements is correct?
A. “×” can be accurately described as “divided into”.
B. “+” can be expressed by the concept of “belonging to”.
C. “÷” is best understood through the lens of “exceeding”.
D. “-” can be effectively represented by the idea of “eliminating”.
30. How does Ben Orlin make mathematics more accessible to learners?
A. By presenting it as a foreign language.B. By using language-related comparisons.
C. By simplifying formulas and calculations.D. By treating it as a universal numbering system.
31. What does Ben Orlin’s approach show?
A. Knowledge is power.B. Practice makes perfect.
C. A different angle makes all the difference. D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
文中多次提到,他将数学概念与语言相关概念进行类比,如:considering numbers as nouns、some mathematical features correspond to verbs and even grammar、Negative numbers can be likened to a linguistic trick,通过这种语言类比的方式,降低了数学的抽象性,让学习者更易接受,对应选项B。

[2026浙江绍兴市11月诊断] Over the past year, the Chicago Department of Transportation has completed 10 safety projects focused on protecting pedestrians(行人)and cyclists, particularly young people. These measures were introduced in response to accidents involving youth. Teens involved with West Town Bike—a nonprofit that runs cycling programs for students—have voiced concerns about cycling safety while also proposing concrete ideas for improvement.
Many of these students expressed mixed feelings about biking in the city: while they value the sense of freedom, they often do not feel safe. Their suggestions range from infrastructural (基础设施的)upgrades to educational initiatives. For example, David Harb from Lane Tech High School stressed the importance of safety training, such as hand signals, and recommended expanding National Walk and Bike to School Day to include high schools. He also proposed replacing stop signs with roundabouts to naturally slow traffic.
Other students highlighted issues with enforcement and infrastructure. Kaniyah Hale believes drivers who cause collisions with cyclists or pedestrians should receive stronger punishment. Armand Dunkines, who was hit while riding where a bike lane suddenly ends, urged the city to use data to guide bike lane placement and increase traffic law enforcement, especially on weekends. Tamara Scott, both a cyclist and a new driver, pointed out that bike lanes are frequently blocked by cars, emphasizing that motorists must be reminded they are sharing the road.
Christopher Garcia, an experienced cyclist, imagines a redesigned road system with separate spaces for bicycles and cars, along with shared zones. Together, these teens agree that making Chicago’s streets safer will require not only physical changes but also a shift in culture and attitudes among all road users.
32. What is West Town Bike according to the text?
A. A project on protecting pedestrians.
B. A school offering teens bike safety training.
C. An official department managing traffic safety.
D. An organization running free cycling programs.
33. What can be inferred about students’ views from paragraph 2?
A. Biking safety must be ensured.
B. Steps count in reducing infrastructure costs.
C. Safety training outweighs facility upgrades.
D. Stop signs effectively slow down traffic flow.
34. Why does the author mention Armand Dunkines’ accident?
A. To call on motorists to follow the rules.B. To complain about the lack of bike lanes.
C. To show the benefits of law enforcement.D. To criticize the poor design of infrastructure.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Teens’ Appeals for Safer Chicago Streets
B. Chicago’s New Traffic Rules for Cyclists.
C. The History of Chicago Cycling Programs
D. Chicago’s Shift toward Fewer Car Accidents

The Unexpected Key to Boosting Our Productivity
[2026广东金太阳8月考] Sometimes we may wonder if we were a machine, we’d never let things fall through the cracks, and we wouldn’t forget things. 36It gets in the way of our productivity because it makes us blind to the roots of our actual problems.
So what is underneath our productivity problems? 37Our productivity depends on our feelings, not new tools. Understanding how our feelings affect us can open up freedom to make progress and finally improve our productivity. So how?
38That means recognizing and working with our emotions. But usually no matter what the issue is, we easily ignore it and hope that it goes away rather than to admit something is wrong. What we forget is that our emotions have great impacts on our actions. The most productive people need to have regular practices to maintain that awareness.
Once we are aware of the problem, the next step is observing. Though difficult, observing without judgment counts most, For example, when our inbox (收件箱) is messy, we just see it with little judgment, 39Avoid feeling anxious, as it prevents us from addressing the root issue.
Finally, try to address our emotions. It is the most effective way to help us be productive daily. A one-touch email strategy or checking the email twice a day may do a bit, but none of these really solve the problem completely. Actually we are able to use our own desire that we can’t let people down to help us get through our inbox. 40
A. Ignore our emotions.
B. Awareness is the first step.
C. Identify what causes the mess.
D. We are not machines but emotional beings.
E. But the idea of being a machine is actually a trap.
F. One day, we’ll find that we’ve finished handling all in it.
G. Sometimes, working like a machine is effective and useful.
Sometimes we may wonder if we were a machine(有时候我们也好奇自己是否是机器)以及空后It gets in the way of our productivity because it makes us blind to the roots of our actual problems(它阻挡了我们的生产率因为它让我们对于实际问题的根源视而不见)可知,it指代的就是我们作为机器的假设,空格应该指出成为机器的弊端。
◎读后知识积累:⑴fall through the cracks未加注意、疏忽;⑵gets in the way 挡路;⑶have impacts on有影响;⑷productivity /ˌprɒdʌk'tɪvəti/ n. ;⑸ have regular practices 进行规律的练习;⑹address/əˈdres/ v. 熟词:演说,演讲;生义:处理;⑺let sb down 辜负某人;⑻get through(设法)处理、完成;⑼root issue根本问题。

They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the store was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
