In English class, Eric would explain grammar rules to Akiko as simply as he could, using gestures and examples. Akiko would listen intently, her eyes filled with gratitude. And in turn, during breaks, Akiko taught Eric more Japanese phrases, not just words for objects but also common greetings and expressions. They even started to create their own little language—a mix of English and Japanese words that only they understood. Their unique communicating way led to a special presentation in class five months later. One day, Ms Sloane decided to hold a special presentation in class.
