B I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mail box, because my mother never believed in email, in Facebook, in texting or cell phones. I was literally waiting by the mailbox to get a letter with a warmest comfort from her. So when I moved to New York and got depressed, I did the only thing I could think of. I wrote those same kinds of letters like my mother for strangers, and tucked them all over the city: in cafes, in libraries, and even in the subway. I blogged about those letters and promised if asked for a hand-written letter, I would write one. Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak — a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in Kansas, a 22-year-old immigrant, all asking me to write them and give them a reason to wait by the mailbox. And this is how I initiated the act The World Needs More Love Letters. Today I run a global organization fueled by those trips to the mailbox. It is a miracle. But the thing about these letters is that most of them have been written by people brought up in a paperless world where some best conversations happen on a screen. We have learned to diary our pain onto Facebook, and we speak swiftly in twitter. Therefore, I’ve been carrying this mail crate (大木箱)with me these days, which is a magical icebreaker. So I get to tell total strangers about a woman whose husband was traumatized (受精神创伤) from war, and how she left love letters throughout the house saying, “Come back to me.” And a man, who had decided to take his life, slept safely with a stack of letters just beneath his pillow, handwritten by strangers who were there for him. These stories convince me that letter-writing will never need to be about efficiency, because it is an art now, all of it: the signing, the scripting, the mailing. 24. Why did the author share her experience in college? A. To prove her writing consistency. B. To criticize digital communication. C. To describe her financial struggles. D. To show her emotional bond with letters. 25. What caused the author to launch the act?A. She advocated the paperless lifestyle. B. She intended to provide professional aid. C. She tried to improve her communication skills. D. She aimed to give emotional support with letters. 26. Why does the author call the mail crate “a magical icebreaker”? A. It has magic power to melt ice. B. It empowers people to be brave. C. It serves as a conversation starter. D. It helps to solve mental problems. 27. What is the author’s attitude towards letter-writing in the digital age? A. Neutral B. Favorable C. Critical D.Indifferent C Latest genetic analysis of Ludwig van Beethoven’s hair has revealed that the composer had a high genetic risk for liver (肝) disease, which could have contributed to his death. The discovery contradicts the widely-believed suggestion that the composer died from lead poisoning, but does not shed light on how he came to lose his hearing. Tristan Begg at the University of Cambridge and his colleagues have analysed the DNA of eight locks of hair claimed to come from Beethoven’s head to see if it could explain the composer’s health issues. To make sure the hair actually came from Beethoven, researchers first examined the paperwork for each lock and used DNA analysis to determine the age of the samples. “For DNA samples from the last few centuries, you’ll tend to see the accumulation of damage patterns,” says Begg. “You want to see these patterns consistent with the documented age of the samples.” Then they compared the DNA of the eight locks. The combination of these methods led them to conclude that five of them were from Beethoven. Examining the DNA data, the researchers found that the composer had a high genetic risk for liver disease. Begg says this risk would be relatively benign for most people, but Beethoven’s reportedly high alcohol consumption would have increased the likelihood that he developed the condition. Begg says this finding, combined with information from examining his dead body, suggests that cirrhosis, a serious liver disease, could have led to Beethoven’s death. Previous analysis of Beethoven’s hair samples suggested he had lead poisoning, but this study reveals that the earlier work was done on hair from a woman. “This kind of genetic study of a famous individual is fascinating. We hope that by making Beethoven’s genetic data publicly available for researchers, remaining questions about his health and genealogy (家谱) can someday be answered,” Begg said. 28. What did the latest research find about Beethoven? A. Lead poisoning led to his death. B. His gene determined his deafness. C. He probably died from liver disease. D. Too much alcohol ruined his health. 29. How did researchers ensure the hair came from Beethoven? A. By combining different DNA samples.B. By examining and collecting paperwork. C. By analyzing and comparing genetic data. D. By documenting consistent damage patterns. 30. What does the underlined word “benign” mean in Paragraph 3? A. Harmless. B. Unacceptable. C. Additional. D. Significant. 31. Why is the “hair from a woman” mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To blame previous researchers. B. To show advances in technology. C. To explain a past error in conclusion. D. To discuss gender differences in research. D A corn plant knows how to find water in soil with the very tips of its roots, but some varieties, including many used for developing high-output corn in the U.S., appear to have lost part of that ability, according to a Stanford-led study. With climate change increasing droughts, the findings hold potential for developing more drought-resistant varieties of corn. The study, published in the journal Science, uncovers genetic mechanisms (遗传机制)behind root “hydropatternung”, or how plant roots branch toward water and avoid dry spaces in soil. In particular, the researchers discovered that ethylene, a plant hormone(激素)known to help bananas ripen, also influences how roots grow to seek water. For this study, the researchers developed a new, simplified way to study water sensitivity in roots. They found corn varieties adapted to hot and dry regions like Mexico were very good at making new root branches toward water and avoiding dry areas. In contrast, the varieties adapted to moderate regions of North America frequently grew roots randomly without distinguishing between dry and wet areas in the soil. “Interestingly, the plants that are better at sensing where the water is are also making deeper root systems,” said lead author Johannes Scharwies, “One idea is that if the plant doesn’t waste time growing top branches into places where it doesn’t find any water and nutrients, then it has more energy to grow deeper down where water is more likely.” Genetic analyses reveal two plant hormones, auxin and ethylene, play a role in how corn roots respond to water. While auxin was already known to help control this process, ethylene’s involvement was a new discovery. In experiments with thale cress—a model plant often used in research—the researchers found auxin signaling promotes root branch development toward water, while ethylene stops branching when the root is exposed to air. Further research is needed to better understand the interaction of these genetic pathways before corn varieties can be developed with more drought-resistant root systems, but the findings highlight the significance of studying these localized responses at root tips, researchers said. 32. What is the primary focus of the Stanford-led study? A. Drought-resistant corn varieties. B. Ethylene’s effect on fruit ripening. C. Genetic regulation of root branching.D. Impact of climate change on plant roots. 33. What can be inferred from Johannes Scharwies’s remarks? A. Stronger hydropatterning is linked to greater root depth. B. Plant hormones make a huge difference to root growth. C. Hormones guarantee better water-seeking root systems. D. Random branching conserves energy for higher production. 34. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A. Model plants in research. B. Genetic analysis methods. C. Findings of previous research. D. Hormones’ role in root growth. 35. What does the last paragraph suggest future research do? A. Clarify connecting gene routes. B. Accelerate new corn breeding. C. Study combined hormone effects. D. Compare root tip responses in plants. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Gardens are some of the most beautiful places on earth. The sad reality of gardening is that weeds compete with the plants you want and take away from their beauty. 36 Most people try to find a quick and easy solution to the problem of weeds by using chemical weed killers, known as herbicides. Sometimes, though, a solution can cause even bigger problems. Actually using chemical herbicides can have quite a few unintended consequences. 37 They effectively kill weeds, but they can also kill other desirable plants and species. Not only that, but herbicides pose significant health risks to humans. And did you know that repeated use of herbicides can make weeds resistant to their effects? 38 After weeds have already invaded your flower bed or garden, you obviously have to find a way to handle them. There are two basic methods of removing weeds: physical removal and mechanical removal. Physical removal — when using this method you are literally destroying the weeds by putting them out of the ground. 39 This method is generally very effective, but it takes effort. Mechanical removal — this method, which uses a weed eater or a lawnmower, mows weeds down to the ground. It doesn’t take out the roots, though, so the weeds will grow back. 40 With this method, it not only beatifies the garden but also saves you much effort. By using some of these natural methods, you can keep your garden looking superb without using dangerous herbicides that could damage your health and the environment. A.But herbicides use isn’t the only way to get rid of weeds. B.As you might imagine, these chemicals poison the environment. C.Then, place garden plants close together to crowd out the weeds. D.You can pull out the weeds by hand or take them out with a shovel.E.Here are some solutions to keeping weeds from invading your garden in the first place. F.As for preventing weeds, covering the ground with landscapes fabrics may be a good way. G.As a result, weed control seems to be a never-ending part of sustaining the beauty of a garden. 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的 A、B、C 和 D 四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 A family has raised more than $250,000 for a Domino’s delivery driver, who was injured on Feb. 3 while delivering the family’s food. While Anthony and his younger sister, Kate, started to eat breakfast, their mom and dad sat down at the table with a piece of paper and a pen. “We have so much to do before Alyssa and Nicolas arrive,” Anthony’s mom said as she checked the list. “We need to buy groceries, clean the floors, and finish several other chores. We have plenty of time to complete everything since your cousins won’t be here until after dinner.” “Can I go to the grocery store with you, Mom?” Anthony asked. He liked helping his mom with the shopping, and sometimes she rewarded him with a small treat. Anthony thought about the kind of treat he might choose at the store, such as the cinnamon gum that his friend Caleb loved to chew. When he thought of Caleb, suddenly Anthony jumped up from the kitchen table. “Today is Field Day at the recreation center!” Anthony cried out with a worried look on his face. “Caleb is counting on me to run the team races with him. We have to beat the team that won last year!” “Did you tell Mom and me about this before today?” his dad asked. Anthony shook his head. “I'm sorry,” Anthony said. “I lost the flier Mr Jacobs gave us after soccer practice, and I forgot to tell you about it. Field Day starts at noon with a picnic, and the games and races begin after lunch.” Anthony sighed, “I need to call Caleb so he can find a new partner.” Anthony knew his parents would not let him skip his responsibilities around the house just because he forgot to mention the event. While Anthony loved hanging out with his cousins and wanted to make everything presentable for their visit, he also wanted to keep his word to Caleb. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 “Maybe there’s a way to do both,” Anthony thought. The event kicked off with a live cooking demonstration by a chef, who shared professional tips on perfect seasoning. Then teams dashed around the kitchen - gathering materials, frying eggs, and stir-frying vegetables — all while racing against the clock. Throughout the event, I was amazed by my classmates’ creativity — some enhanced simple dishes with unique sauces, while others turned their plates into edible art. It hit me then that cooking is equal parts skill and imagination. The event not only highlighted the joy of hands-on work but also promoted teamwork and sparked creativity. Hopefully, our school will keep offering these hands-on activities—they perfectly blend learning with real-world fun! 第二节范文: “Maybe there’s a way to do both,” Anthony thought. “What if we all work together quickly to finish by noon?” he suggested. “That way, the house will be ready, and I can still go to Field Day.” His parents nodded in agreement, and Anthony laughed with relief. He checked the chore list and decided to stay home with his dad andsister to complete the jobs. While the children talked about how to divide the chores, their mom took the grocery list and walked toward the door. After finalizing their plan, Anthony suggested finishing the tasks before his mom returned. Everyone went right to work. Anthony and Kate made the beds while their dad vacuumed the carpet. Afterward, Kate helped their dad clean the bathroom as Anthony swept the kitchen floor. Anthony’s mom arrived at the door with her arms full of bags just as everyone in the house was finishing. “Great Timing!” Anthony shouted. “I have thirty minutes before Field Day begins!” He grabbed his backpack, gave his family a quick wave, and dashed out the door, eager to join Caleb and make the most of Field Day. 参考要点 段一 1.提出方案 2.家人回应,协商 3.决定方案 段二 1.分工行动 2.解决问题 3.点题(主题提升) 录音稿 第一节 (Text 1) M: I’m supposed to give a talk. It wouldn’t exactly make a good impression if we were late. W: Okay, I’ll swing by your place a few minutes before 9 so we can pick up some coffee on the way. (Text 4) M: Nice moves. I didn’t realize you were such a dancer. W: That’s one thing you learn if you grow up in a Cuban family. You dance from the time you’re a child. A Cuban Christmas is like 30 people dancing in the living room. (Text 5) W: What’s going on down there? M: I think someone famous is in the entrance hall, some Hollywood actor. I just wanted to get through the crowd. W: Oh, that explains it. I heard they were going to start filming a movie here. 第二节 (Text 6)W: I’m looking for information about traveling to Nice. M: You can take the 7:27 Eurostar to Paris. After arriving, you can catch the 11:46 TGV train, which will get you to Nice in time for dinner. W: That sounds great. How much does the journey cost? M: It now costs a hundred and thirty-five pounds return, but sometimes it’s cheaper. I’ll write down a couple of website addresses for you and you can search for various times and fares yourself. W: OK, thank you. (Text 7) W: Have you had a chance to read through the comments I made on your latest essay? M: Yes. But I wasn’t sure what you meant by backing up my arguments. W: Well, you need to use more facts to support your ideas. In fact, you are not the only student in the class who needs to work on this a little more. So I’m gonna spend a bit of time this week helping you get your head around it. M: So, I should look for more resources. W: Exactly. And remember to make sure they are reliable and relevant. You can start by checking out the library’s database or academic journals. (Text 8) W: Harry! What’s this in the mail for you from the bank? M: That must be my credit card, Mom. W: A credit card? Why do you need a credit card? M: Well, I thought it would be convenient to have one. W: But look at the letter you have received. The interest rate is so high! M: The bank clerk seemed very nice, and she promised it wouldn’t be so high … W: She was just using her marketing skills. M: But what can I do now? I can’t cancel the card until next year. W: Let me go through the terms carefully. Well, it seems there is hope. It says here that, since you are a student, they will cancel the card with no charge if you provide three reasons why you no longer want the credit card, along with a letter from your parents. (Text 9) M: Chelsea, are you college student athletes allowed to miss classes? W: During the season, we frequently miss class. Other students are probably envious of the number of absences we get. But honestly, missing class is the worst part of being an athlete. First, our grades have to remain high or we could lose our place on the team. Second, the head of the department allows a maximum number of hours we can take off classes. M: How have you personally managed? W: I basically taught myself in my freshman year because I missed some classes. Trying to read, write, calculate, or draw on a moving bus at 10:30 at night isn’t the best way to get a grade A. And because of all those absences, when I get sick, I still have to go to class. M: In conclusion, any regrets? W: It’s hard work to try and balance school, soccer and a social life. But I love playing soccer and I love my team. I chose this life and it’s given me ambition and shown me I must try to be the best academically, athletically and personally.(Text 10) M: Good morning, everybody. Welcome to the Australian Wild Zoo. I would like to start by introducing you to the new features that we have added to our zoo recently. Being the only zoo in the area, we receive thousands of visitors a year. We found that this huge visitor traffic was too demanding for the facilities, so we decided to expand ourselves in order to give every visitor a brilliant experience. Also, we recently expanded the exhibition center. But the entrance fee is the same as before — $10. We intended to build a dog-walking area, but we felt that the zoo should only focus on wild animals. We also introduced a new group of animals, so visitors can now see a whole range of new additions, including lions and bears. But one of our most exciting additions to the zoo is our native kangaroo, whom we have named Frisbee. For a fee of just $5, visitors can have their photos taken with him. With this huge improvement to our facilities, we also found it necessary to change our regulations. We’re finalizing the regulations and will notify everyone once they’re ready for use.
