Petra is the treasure of the world, hidden among mountains. Its most beautiful scenery makes it the
greatest ancient site still standing nowadays.Common sense says, “Perhaps there is nothing on the planet
that resembles it.” Without doubt, there is nothing in the world that resembles it.The rockcarved rosered
city of Petra is full of mysterious_charm;it had been “designed to strike wonder into all who enter it”.
Petra is the most wellknown and beautiful site in Jordan that is about 262 km south of Amman, and
133 km north of Aqaba. The Dead Sea is 80 km north of it.It was the legacy from the Nabataeans, who
settled in the southwest of Jordan a lot more than 2,000 years back.Because of its excellent culture,
buildings and many water channels, Petra has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New
Seven Wonders of the World that attract visitors from all over the world.
To get there, you must pass through a kilometre long, cool, dark and narrow gorge(峡谷) whose two
high sides keep the sunlight out.Suddenly the gorge opens right into a natural square covered with Petra's
most wellknown monuments, which glow in the bright sun.The old town shows the visitors its beautiful
look.It leads people to think about the creativity of the Nabataeans who made Petra as their capital.
Petra flourished for more than 400 years at about the time of Rome and Christ, until it was occupied
by the Roman legions of the Emperor Trajan in 106 AD.
Petra has 800 monuments, including buildings, tombs, baths, halls, temples and streets, which were
mostly carved in the pretty sandstone.
Petra's sights are at their best in early morning and late afternoon.Once the sun warms the colourful
stones, you will see the greatness of Petra. It was seen first when discovered in 1812 after being lost
through the 16th century for nearly 300 years!

Mark, a young person, tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these people are
dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say
to them, “not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune
there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded(报答). When I left a 20-year job in the U.S.
Coast Guard to become a writer, I had no hopes at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my
room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I
immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell
a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I
wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering “what if”. I would keep putting my dream to the
test—even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow land of hope, and
anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
4. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To warn young people of the hardship that a successful writer has to experience.
B. To advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer.
C. To show young people it’s unrealistic for writers to seek wealth and fame.
D. To encourage young people to seek good jobs.

affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded.”可得

culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning.__1__ Culture exists in
agricultural as well as industrialized societies.
Culture is necessary for the survival and existence of human beings as human beings. Practically
everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural
system.__2__Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of
Midnapore in India, the director of a children's home was told by local villagers that there were “ghosts” in
the forest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and
the other about six years old, appeared to have been living with a group of wolves in the forest.__3__In his
diary, the director described his first view of Kamala (as the older child was named) and Amala (the name
given to the younger child):
Kamala was a terriblelooking being, the head, a big ball of something covering the
shoulders.__4__Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They were very fond of raw meat
and raw milk. Gradually, as they got stronger, they began going on all fours, and afterwards began to run on
all fours, just like squirrels.
Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior—by taking
part in a cultural community.__5__
A.From this viewpoint, all human groups have a culture.
B.These children were the ghosts described by the local people.
C.This statement is well supported by some wellwritten cases.

It was my very first teaching job, and I had been hired to lead an energetic group of fouryearolds. One
day my director told me a new kid, Kelly, would come to my group. She was born with a birth defect that
required her to wear leg braces(支架) from the knees down. So she walked very slowly for lack of balance.
We would need to remind the other children to be careful when walking near her so they wouldn't cause her
to fall.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂I was not sure whether I could take on a child with special needs. When Kelly's mother carefully
carried her in and seated her down, other kids came up to Kelly with a hug, and I also smiled to her,
“Welcome to our room, Kelly. We are so excited that you will be a member of our group.”
The first day went really well. Kelly only fell over twice. After several days of carrying her to and
from the yard, I thought, “Why not encourage her to walk down the hallway a little by herself?” I asked
Kelly if she would like to try it, and she became very excited. The next day with our help, Kelly began her
first journey down the hallway. She walked all the way to the next classroom, a total of ten feet. We were
all excited!
And so we began the task of walking daily down the hall. Each day Kelly and I continued our slow
walk down the corridor(走廊). I charted her progress with little pencil marks on the wall. Every few days
the pencil marks got farther and farther apart. After several weeks, Kelly made it all the way to the yard!
We were all excited and hugged her with gentle pats on the back.
Weeks passed and Kelly continued to walk out to the yard every single day. We seldom carried her as
she became more independent.
One week in December, Kelly was absent for several days. She was in Manhattan getting her annual
checkup with her doctor.

参考答案:
Paragraph 1:
When her mum brought her back to school, she asked me if I had been doing anything different
with Kelly. I told Kelly's mum softly that I had encouraged her to walk outside to the yard by herself. I
explained that she seemed to enjoy walking independently. “The doctor said her legs have got more
exercise in the past few months than in the past four years of her life.I don't know how to thank you for
everything you have done for my daughter.” She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
Paragraph 2:
Seventeen years later, I still think back to the first time Kelly made it down the long hallway.
Whenever I have a bad day in teaching or life, I think of Kelly and her smile as she painstakingly walked
down that hallway. She taught me that no difficulty in life is too big to overcome. You just need to keep
working at it—one step at a time.
