“A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high.” I’m sure T. J. Ware was made to feel this way almost every
day in school. By high school, T. J. was the most celebrated troublemaker in his town. Teachers would feel uneasy or
nervous whenever they saw T. J.'s name on their classroom lists.I met T. J. for the first time when all the students at school were attending ACE training. At first, he showed no
interest in the discussion. But slowly, the interactive games drew him in. T. J. had some brilliant thoughts on those
situations, which were welcomed by his group. By the end of the activity, the other students on the team were
impressed with his ideas and elected T. J. co-chairman of the team.
When T. J. showed up at school on Monday morning, a group of teachers were expressing their disagreements to
the school principal about his being elected co-chairman. The principal told them the program's goal was to find good
feelings and make them stronger until real change happens. The teachers left the meeting, and were sure that failure
was unavoidable.
Two weeks later, T. J. and his friends led a group of 70 students to collect food. They collected a school record:
2,854 cans of food in just two hours. The local newspaper covered the event with a full-page article the next day. That
newspaper story was posted on the main bulletin board at school, where everyone could see it. The event he started
now yields 9,000 cans of food in one day, taking care of 70 percent of the need for food for one year.
T. J. reminds us that a bird with a broken wing only needs mending. But once it has healed, it can fly higher than
the rest. T. J. got a job. He is flying quite nicely these days.
24. What do we know about T. J. before he attended the training?
A. He was talkative in class. B. He didn't have a good fame.
C. His ideas were quite brilliant. D. He showed up at school every day.
25. Why did the team members elect T. J. co-chairman?
A. He promised them a bright future. B. They wanted to offer him a chance.
C. They thought he was welcoming. D. He was considered suitable for the job.
26. What do we know about teachers' attitude towards T. J. 's being elected?
A. Uncaring B. Favorable C. Doubtful D. Worried
27. What does the author try to convey with this story?
A. No pain, no gain. B. Rome wasn't built in a day.
C. You can't tell what's inside just by the cover. D. Treat others as you want to be treated.

As for the choice of jobs, girls and boys as young as seven have preference with sex differences in a new study.
Girls choose jobs based on care and love, while boys choose jobs based on money and power.
Professor Laura Scholes and Dr Sarah McDonald surveyed 332 Year Three students from 14 Australian schools.
They found that the top jobs for boys included sports and STEM(science, technology, engineering and
mathematics)related work, while girls, on the other hand, wanted to be teachers or nurses.
Professor Scholes said the influence of sex stereotypes(刻板印象)on such choices begins in early
childhood. “Bright pink toys for girls and blue toys for boys are sold in stores around the world.” she said, “In the
boys’ section, you'll find science, construction and warfare toys—perhaps a robot or a telescope. In the girls' section,
you'll see toys related to dolls, kitchens, makeup, jewellery and crafts.”
“This results in lower numbers of girls taking STEM subjects at school. In turn, this means fewer women are
going to work in the sciences.” Professor Scholes's comments came as women make up only two percent of the STEM
workforce, with the biggest gap in the highest-paid jobs of computer science and engineering. In Australia, some brands(品牌)are no longer designing their toys just for boys or girls. Danish toy
giant Lego said its products were mainly used by boys, but it promised to work to remove sex preference from its
toys and instead market them for both sexes last week after a global study found that 71% of boys were afraid of being
made fun of for playing with toys marketed at girls.
28. Which of the following jobs do the girls not tend to choose?
A. Teachers. B. Programmers C. Dressers D. Nurses.
29. What causes fewer girls to choose STEM subjects according to Professor Scholes?
A. The effect of sex stereotypes. B. Their desire to be teachers or nurses.
C. Their hobbies based on care and love. D. Low-paid jobs concerned with sciences.
30. What does the underline word “remove” in the last paragraph mean?
A. take away B. try out C. leave alone D. pick up
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The importance of early childhood education in shaping career choices.
B. The influence of sex stereotypes in toys on children's career preferences.
C. The reasons why there are fewer girls in STEM fields.
D. The global success of Lego toys and their marketing strategies.
D
Teenagers like to take risks. Adults might not understand these things. Is it because of bad decisions or young
minds?
In their book, Wildhood, the bestselling author Barbara, present findings from their five-year study on wild
animal teenage years. He did a study on how age affects death in wild animals and discovered a surprising fact: young
ones naturally take risks for good reasons.
Life on Earth for teenage and young adult animals is just as dangerous. Young animals in the wild often have
more accidents, drown, and go hungry compared to grown-up animals. And they are more likely to be targeted
and killed by predators(捕食者). Old enough to be away from home? But new to the ways of the
world? This time of life is risky for human teens as well. Wildlife biologists describe these unprepared creatures as
“predator naives”.
Facing death danger while still growing up is a fact of life for teens among different animals. Teens must know
about dangers if they are to survive. Said another way: To become safe, you must take risks. Adult bats(蝙
蝠)typically run away from predators such as owl. But teen bats have been seen doing the opposite—flying
toward them. Biologists call this behavior “predator inspection”. Predator inspection provides young animals
important information about their deadly predators. Being familiar with predatory strategies helps teens survive and
even keep away from future attacks.
Studying wild animal teen years offers a new understanding of why teenagers act the way they do. Parents should
balance the desire to protect with the need to let their teenagers test their wings. The research suggests that teens
need some exposure(暴露)to the dangers they will someday face on their own—and without knowing that,
parents' over-protection maybe the riskiest behavior of all.
32. What do we know about predator naives?A. They don't have much living experience. B. They are more likely to hurt others.
C. They are away from home sometimes. D. They are living without enough food.
33. How can teens survive according to paragraph 4?
A. By experiencing various dangers.
B. By keeping away from dangers.
C. By getting closer to other companions.
D. By learning the experience of staying safe from elders.
34. Why do some teen animals risk their lives to face predators directly?
A. They don't have to fear danger. B. They have to fight for food to live.
C. They can learn about their predators. D. They can get away from their predators.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Children shouldn't be protected by their parents.
B. Parents should be with their children while facing dangers.
C. Children should be kept safe from dangers.
D. Studying wild animal teens benefits human parenting.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing competition. I said no
without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language.
Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to show my writing on the sinking(沉
没)of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply, “Because I love
your stories. If you're willing to work hard, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I
agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠)in Boston who rode a
horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come
from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think when he ran through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? While writing, I got tired; I had doubts; I even wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going, I worked hard. I
checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out plenty of books on Paul Revere
from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay(文章)to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now,
write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way
to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.

Dear Jane,
I'm sorry to hear that you are exhausted due to the pressure of school work. So, I'm writing to offer you some
useful advice on how to adjust yourself.
To begin with, it's advisable to balance your school work and leisure. Sparing some time every day for exercise is
a good way to build up your body and reduce your pressure. What's more, you are supposed to have enough sleep,
which will keep you refreshed. Last but not least, it's highly recommended that you talk to your parents about what
you are struggling with since they are your strongest supporters.
I hope my suggestions will be of use to you and that you will make progress in your study.
Yours,
Li Hua

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the competition, there came the news. I won first prize! Hearing the
unexpected news, I froze. I could feel the heart pounding in my chest. Did I really make it? Never in my life did I
expect to take the lead in an English writing contest! A few days later, striding onto the podium of the award
presentation with my chest puffing out in pride, I couldn't conceal my smile. After receiving my prize, I nodded to
everyone in thanks. Wild cheers and thunderous applause erupted from the audience.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. Seeing my coming, my teacher raised his head,
gave me a thumb-up and praised, “Well done!” I could sense a flash of delight in his eyes. Tears of gratitude welling
up in my eyes, I couldn't help hugging my teacher tightly, crying, “Without your encouragement and support, I
couldn't have won the prize!" "No, you deserve it, for your efforts and perseverance like Revere's fabled horse. Keep it
in mind that be brave to pursue your dreams and never give up!" my teacher replied. It was my teacher's words that
enabled me to approach my own talent and gain confidence.A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the competition, there came the news. I won the first place. Hearing
the news, I stood there, frozen. I couldn't believe my ears. Had I heard right? My classmates gave me a look of
disbelief at first, and then cheered and clapped happily. When I came to my senses, tears of excitement came to my
eyes. At the award presentation, I accepted the award certificate, extremely nervous and excited. At that moment, I
couldn’t help thinking of my teacher.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. When presented the award certificate to my
teacher, his eyes glistening with tears, he reached out his hands and hugged me tightly. I expressed my sincerest
gratitude to the teacher and attributed this small achievement to him. Looking into my eyes, he said, "I'm so proud of
you. It's your own hard work that paid off. Believe in yourself and you can write better and better." I nodded
determinedly. That was when I fell in love with writing.
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the competition, there came the news. I was informed that I won the
first prize and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so surprised to hear the unexpected news
that I couldn’t say a word. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed
my thanks to my teacher. I said, "It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without
your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Thank you very much!”
I went to my leacher's office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my
hands, he said excitedly "Congratulations! You made it! I knew you'd win! I’m am proud of you." "You know I didn't
like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works." I said seriously. Since then, I
have written many great works. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to
writing.

M: Of course, I see. But I never saw you in the park at 6 o’clock in the morning. You never exercised, did you?
W: Well, I’ve decided to make a change.
M: Why?
W: I was reading books at home yesterday. When I got up from the bed to get something to drink, I felt trouble in
breathing. Although the discomfort went away soon, I was scared, so I went to the doctor immediately.
M: Was there anything wrong?
W: He said I would die of heart disease if I kept the former lifestyle.
M: So what was the doctor’s advice?
W: Have a balanced diet and take more exercise. Thus, I have to say goodbye to my favorite fried chips and Coke, but
what annoys me most is that I have to leave my warm bed at such an early time while others are still having dreams.

M: Hello! I’m Harvard Smith. As the editor of The Voice, I’d like to introduce you to our school daily newspaper.
We need volunteers to help us with our newspaper. Experience isn’t absolutely necessary. But we need people with
writing and typing skills. Since The Voice comes out five days a week, we need excellent students who know how toplan their time well. Good grades are necessary. We can pay you depending on your work. But don’t expect to get
rich. This isn’t something you do for the money. Mostly it’s just for fun. Anyone who is interested in this job should
speak to me immediately after this meeting. Be prepared to start right now. The first issue goes to press tomorrow.
