It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still
in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I
wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have
guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.
I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened
my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no
one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that
there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one.
My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It
is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a
while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough
to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy.
And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.
24.Which word can best describe the author’s daughter?
A.Wealthy. B.Thoughtful. C.Easy-going. D.Humorous.
25.Why was the author in shame when seeing his old coat in the closet?
A.It cost too much. B.It was looking dirty.
C.There was not enough room for his new coat. D.It was not sent to someone in need.
26.What is the author’s decision after his second coat becomes old?
A.Telling his daughter. B.Buying a new one soon.
C.Donating it to charity. D.Sending something else to charity.
27.What does the author want to show in the last paragraph?
A.Giving fills our wants. B.Love is the key to joy.
C.The more you give, the more you lose. D.A coat is large enough to cover our wants.

Over the past few decades, children have been taking part less in free play and more in organized sports.
While doing organized sports has both social and physical benefits for young children, worries about safety and
benefits increase.
Though most children are naturally likely to be physically active, not all kids are willing to get up and move.
Soccer coach Joseph Luxbacher says, “Every kid has the possibility of being a good sportsman in different kinds of
sports. Participating (参加) in organized sports such as the school soccer team introduces direction to children’s
physical activities. Following a team schedule gives kids a set time and place to exercise. As a result, kids can be
safe from accidents and be protected against physical harm.”
What’s more, participating in organized sports gives children time to communicate with others and shows
good sportsmanship. For young children who may still be very self-centered, participating in team, sports teach
them to think about the group and encourages them to be glad about the success of their teammates. Kids can also
benefit from spending time with their coach and having a chance to develop a positive (良好的) relationship with
an adult other than their parents, especially if the coach is both skilled and devoted (全心全意的) to being a
positive instructor.
Playing organized sports requires a lot of time for practice and games, so it would seem that this could
influence students’ study. Actually it can ameliorate students’ test performance. That’s because to play organized
sports well, players have to memorize information, do repetitive actions, and learn from teammates. All these types
of learning skills can make students score higher.
Since stress can come from many different sources — parents, coaches, teammates or themselves — many
children who participate in organized sports feel pressured to succeed. While a little stress can be helpful in leading
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司children to perform with increased focus and strength, too much stress will leave young kids feeling very tired.
Organized sports are more likely to put the right amount of pressure on them.
32.What can we learn from Joseph Luxbacher’s words?
A.Organized sports can help develop kids’ talents.
B.Most children prefer free play to organized sports.
C.Most children have a set time and place to exercise.
D.Organized sports can better protect kids from injuries.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Ways to attract kids to organized sports.
B.Standards of a good organized sports coach.
C.Social skills developed by playing organized sports.
D.Positive parent-child relationships built by doing sports.
34.What does the underlined word “ ameliorate” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Score. B.Record. C.Check. D.Improve.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.How organized sports can benefit children B.How to coach children in organized sports
C.How organized sports put pressure on children D.How to be a good teammate in organized sports
32.D 33.C 34.D 35.A
Following a team schedule gives kids a set time and place to exercise. As a
result, kids can be safe from accidents and be protected against physical harm.(遵循团队时间表可以让孩子们有
What’s more, participating in organized sports gives children time to
communicate with others and shows good sportsmanship. For young children who may still be very self-centered,
participating in team, sports teach them to think about the group and encourages them to be glad about the success
of their teammates. Kids can also benefit from spending time with their coach and having a chance to develop a

That’s because to play organized sports well, players have to memorize
information, do repetitive actions, and learn from teammates. All these types of learning skills can make students
Over the past few decades, children have been taking part less in free play and
more in organized sports. While doing organized sports has both social and physical benefits for young children,
worries about safety and benefits increase.(在过去的几十年里,孩子们越来越少地参加自由游戏,而更多地参

Tom threw himself on the sofa, sighing. Mother’s Day was coming, but he didn’t have a present. “How can I
buy a present without any money?” he thought.
Tom picked up the newspaper that was lying on the sofa. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page.
The local department store was sponsoring(赞助)a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a beautiful
and precious gift for her.” said the advertisement.
“This is perfect!” thought Tom. He ran to his room with the newspaper. After taking a pencil and a blank
piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes lunch for me to take to school and she never
forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want her to. She always remembers to check
under the bed for monsters(怪兽). And she gives me the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who may laugh
at me for hugging my mom.”
Tom liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp. He ran to the mailbox
with his entry(参赛作品). “Mom will love having a special gift,” he thought.
Tom checked his mailbox every day for his prize. Days went by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before
Mother’s Day. Tom still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a gift. And he still
didn’t have money.
He had to think of something. Tom closed his eyes, curled(使弯曲)his toes and thought hard.

67.One possible version:
Then Tom thought he could show his love for his mother in another way. He searched in his drawers and
fortunately found a piece of delicate paper. He sat down straight on his chair, and began to write a letter in his best
handwriting as a Mother’s Day present. “Dear Mom, I’m writing this to tell you that you are the best mother in the
world…” With a sincere heart. Tom finished the letter and put it in an envelope with a smile on his face.
On Mother’s Day, Tom gave his mother the envelope with the letter in it. She opened it and found the letter.
Having finishing reading the letter, his mom swept him up into her arms(抱进怀里)with her eyes wet. “Thank you,
my dear!” she said, hugging Tom more tightly. Leaning against his mother’s shoulder, Tom slowly explained why
be had chosen to write a letter as a gift. After hearing the reason, his mom gently touched his head, saving, “To me,
your letter is better than any other gift.” Hugging each other, they felt happy as if they had everything. Indeed, love
should be made known to loved ones.
