With the extensive growth of crops, the requirement of modern techniques has become necessary. Here aresome modern technology used in agriculture for enhancing productivity:
Information Technology in Agriculture
The most important contribution of Information Technology has been the weather forecast reports. It has
helped the farmers be better prepared and gives them a heads-up if any heavy rainfall is to occur in the near time. It
also gathers information and keeps track of the market prices, seasonal changes, cultivation tricks and so on.
Data Accumulated From Soil
For farmers to make informed decisions, it is necessary to understand the nature of the soil. Thus, to
understand the land and to analyze its future productivity, the farmers need to learn more about the past and present
state of the land. For this, the soil data is accumulated, and soil maps are prepared, to provide access to various
farmers and agriculturists to study the soil capacity so that sustainable agriculture can be initiated.
Minochromosol Technology
The concept of Minochromosol Technology is very much similar to the workings of a cell. There are
numerous particles inside a cell, one of which is a chromosome. It is responsible for genetic development in our
bodies and it holds a lot of significance. They decide the traits in our bodies. Minochromosol Technology takes the
help of chromosomes. With the help of this, many farmers can yield great profits and has helped save crops from
getting infected or deficient.
Sensors- Soil and Water
Soil and Water sensors are an economical option for farmers who cannot afford highly equipped and costly
technological advancements. These low-cost sensors help detect the nitrogen level and moisture content in the soil
and crops. It helps the farmers to plan and schedule their crops’ water requirements.
21.In what aspect does Information Technology benefit agriculture most?
A.Providing farmers with a heads-up about the market price.
B.Making weather predictions and getting farmers prepared.
C.Keeping track of local demands for goods.
D.Acquiring information about the soil.
22.Which modern technology gets the inspiration from human body?
A.Information Technology in Agriculture.
B.Data Accumulated From Soil.
C.Minochromosol Technology.
D.Sensors - Soil and Water.
23.What makes Sensors - Soil and Water an economical option?A.Gathering information. B.Accumulating data.
C.Restoring water. D.Saving cost.

September usually marks the start of a new season—but what you call that season depends on where you are
and whom you ask.
In the UK, people will tell you it’s “autumn”. However, cross the Atlantic and you'll find that people use both
“fall” and “autumn” interchangeably (可互换地) when talking about this time of year. In the English language, the
season has two widely accepted names. However, many people don’t understand why there are two words. Why
does it have to be bewildering?
According to Dictionary. com, “fall” isn’t a modern nickname that followed the more traditional “autumn”.
The two terms were actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other.
Before either word appeared in the word list of English, the seasons separating the cold and warm months
didn’t have common names. The main thing people did during the pre-winter period was collect crops, so it was
called “harvest” in Old English.
Then, in the 1600s, more and more people left their farmland and moved into cities. Without farming, the term
“harvest” became less useful to city dwellers (居民). Some English speakers needed another name for the season.
They knew leaves fell from trees during that season, so people called the season “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for
short. But at the end of the 1600s, “autumn”, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, was
introduced into England and overtook “fall” as the standard term for the harvesting season.
At the same time, British settlers were making their first long journey to North America. They brought the
words “fall” and “autumn” with them. Today, using both words to describe the season is a uniquely American
behavior.
24.What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Confusing. B.Interesting. C.Shocking. D.Inspiring.
25.Why was a new word "fall" created?
A.To better describe crops.
B.To replace the term “harvest”.
C.To mark the move into cities.
D.To celebrate the harvesting season.
26.What do we know about “autumn”?
A.It is a French word. B.It is preferred by farmers.C.It means harvesting crops. D.It appears later than “fall”.
27.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Harvest and Weather B.Fall and Autumn
C.The Season of September D.The Origin of Autumn

Throughout history scientists have risked their health and their lives in their search for the truth.
Sir Isaac Newton, the seventeenth century scientist, was very smart, but that didn’t stop him from doing some
pretty stupid things. In his laboratory in Cambridge he often did the strangest experiments. Once, while testing how
light passes through lenses (晶状体), he put a long needle into his eye, pushed it to the back, and then moved it
around just to see what would happen. Luckily, nothing long-lasting did. On another occasion he stared at the sun
for as long as he could bear, to discover what effect this would have on his sight. Again he escaped suffering
permanent damage, though he had to spend some days in a darkened room before his eyes recovered.
In the 1750s the Swedish chemist Karl Scheele was the first person to find a way to produce phosphorus (磷).
He in fact discovered eight more chemical elements including chlorine (氯), though he didn’t get any praise for
them. He was a very clever scientist, but his one failing was a curious habit of tasting a little of every substance he
worked with. This risky practice finally caught up with him, and in 1786 he was found dead in his laboratory
surrounded by a large number of dangerous chemicals, any of which might have been responsible for his death.
Eugene Shoemaker was a respected geologist. He spent a large part of his life studying craters (火山口) on the
moon, and how they were formed, and later did research into the comets of the planet Jupiter. In 1997 he and his
wife were in the Australian desert where they went every year to search for places where comets might have hit the
earth. While driving in the Tanami desert, normally one of the emptiest places in the world, another vehicle crashed
into them and Shoemaker was killed on the spot. Some of his ashes (骨灰) were sent to the moon aboard the Lunar
Prospector spacecraft and left there — he is the only person who has had this honor.
28.What does the underlined word “permanent” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Brief. B.Slight.
C.Lasting. D.Ordinary.
29.What did Karl Scheele like doing when performing experiments?
A.Tasting chemicals. B.Staying in the empty lab.
C.Experimenting in darkness. D.Working together with others.
30.What special honor was Shoemaker given after his death?
A.He was buried in the Tanami desert.B.Some of his ashes were placed on the moon.
C.One comet of Jupiter was named after him.
D.A spacecraft carrying him traveled around Jupiter.
31.The text is mainly about three great scientists’ _____.
A.special honors B.great achievements
C.famous experiments D.suffering in the job
D
Researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that artificially create the taste of salt, as part of efforts to
reduce sodium(钠) levels in some of the country’s most popular dishes.
The chopsticks work by using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on the eater’s wristband. The
device conveys sodium ions(离子) from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of
saltiness, according to Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo, whose laboratory collaborated
with the food and drink manufacturer Kirin to develop the device.
“The chopsticks use very weak electricity — not enough to affect the human body — to adjust the function
of ions to change the perception of taste by making food seem to taste stronger or weaker,” said Kirin.
The chopsticks could find a receptive audience in Japan, where the traditional diet tends to be high in salt
due to the use of ingredients such as miso and soy sauce. The average Japanese adult consumes about 10 grams of
salt a day, double the amount recommended by the World Health Organization.
Miyashita and Kirin said clinical tests on people who followed a low-sodium diet had confirmed that the
device enhanced the salty taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. They said participants given reduced-salt
miso soup had commented on the improved “richness, sweetness and overall tastiness” of the dish.
High salt intake can contribute to high blood pressure, which is the single biggest cause of heart attacks and
strokes. “To prevent these diseases, we need to reduce the amount of salt we take,” said Kirin researcher Ai Sato.
“If we try to avoid taking less salt in a conventional way, we would need to bear the pain of cutting our favorite
food from our diet.”
The team said they would continue to improve the electric chopsticks and hoped to make them available to
consumers next year. Miyashita’s lab also is exploring other ways in which technology can be used to engage the
senses — it has also invented a lickable (可以舔的) TV screen that imitates the flavor of various foods.
32.What do the second and third paragraph mainly about?
A.How the electric chopsticks work. B.How the electric chopsticks were developed.C.How people will benefit from the electric chopsticks. D.How the human body reacts to the electric
chopsticks.
33.Why are the chopsticks popular with Japanese consumers?
A.They pay more attention to their health. B.Their food often contains too much salt.
C.They are more willing to try new things.D.They are picky about the taste of the food.
34.What can we learn about the electric chopsticks?
A.They can help increase people’s appetite.B.They can change the sodium content of foods.
C.They do not pose any safety threat to the human body. D.Their clinical test results did not meet the
expectations.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Electric chopsticks that make food seem saltier
B.Electric chopsticks that make food more delicious
C.Electric chopsticks that help adjust people’s dietary habits
D.Electric chopsticks that urge people to care for their diets

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was the new teacher with a substitute (代课老师) the students are familiar with as my co-teacher.
During the first class, I found the kids sat wherever they wanted, and as the substitute attempted to lead the
class, I watched the kids fixing their hair, drawing, passing notes.
One girl crawled under her desk, and I spent half hour trying to coach her out. She only smiled.
One boy raised his hand, crying, while the students around him began screaming. As I approached him, the
smell hit me.
“Go to the restroom,” the substitute instructed before calling the office for cleanup.
The bell rang a few minutes later, and when the kids were out to play, the substitute looked at me. “Tracy is
the girl under the desk. She can’t read at all. Paul is the same. He sits next to her.”
“What do they do while they’re in a regular class?”
“Just leave them to themselves.”
“What about Kyle?” I asked, referring to the boy who’d had an accident. “Shouldn’t we check on him?”
“No, he’ll get a change of clothes and be back later.”
Soon a man came in to clean Kyle’s desk.“Hi, I’m Sylvia.” I said, offering my hand. He looked at it, then at the substitute, before turning to work
without a word.
The substitute said, “I am leaving for a few minutes. I’ll be back.”
She didn’t return.
As the man finished cleaning the desk, he said, “They didn’t tell you, did they? Most of this class has been
kicked out of others. They are the rejects, the students no one else wants.”
The bell rang, and he gave me a small smile. “My name is Willie. I hope you stay.”
Twenty-one students entered and immediately noticed I was now alone with them.
“I told you she would be gone,” one yelled.
“I’m sure she’ll be back any moment,” I replied. “Even if she isn’t, I’m still here.”
“Not for long,” a chorus rang out.

Then it hit me — they were used to rejection, to seeing others walk away. The thought saddened me, and Iknew they deserved more. “I’m your teacher for the rest of the year,” I informed them. “Sure you are,” a student
muttered. “You’ll be gone soon,” I spent the rest of the day trying to get to know them. Many refused to answer me.
The minutes dragged on until the final dismissal bell. As the last child left, I sank into my chair, wanting nothing
more than to curl into a ball and weep. That first week was mentally and physically exhausting.
