People usually wash their produce before eating to remove some remains from pesticides (农药). But are your
fruits and vegetables really clean enough to eat? Now 14-year-old Sirish Subash from Georgia has won the 2024 3M
Young Scientist Challenge for developing an AI-based handheld tool that is very accurate in finding pesticide
residues (残留物).
The ninth grader at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology in Snellville has received the
title “America’s Top Young Scientist”, according to a press release from the 3M Company.
Now in its 17th year, the challenge supports middle school students to think creatively and apply STEM principles
to discover real-world solutions. When the finalists were chosen, they were paired with a 3M scientist who guided
them over the summer to help transform their ideas from just concepts into models. Sirish spent four months competing
against nine other finalists and secured his win at the final challenge events at 3M’s global headquarters in St. Paul,
Minnesota.
Sirish’s journey to winning the award came from watching his mother wash vegetables and fruits every day and
caution him to always do so. He wondered whether washing actually made a difference.
Since 70 percent of produce in the US has pestioide residues that are linked to illnesses like cancer and
Alzheimer’s, it’s very important to know if the fruits and vegetables are safe to eat. That’s what PestiSCAND is
designed to do. The device works by shining light on the surface of the produce and measuring the wavelengths
that bounce back. Sirish has tested the device on more than 12,000 food samples including strawberries, apples, andtomatoes.
PestiSCAND uses a sensor and an AI-based processor to achieve an accuracy of over 85 percent. Sirish aims at
making this technology widely accessible so that consumers will be able to make safe food choices. But he still
believes people should wash their produce anyway. He plans to use the $25,000 prize from the competition to help
fund his educational goal of attending MIT.

This week Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy released a warning about the risks that social media presents to
the mental health of children and teenagers. Adolescent (青少年的) mental health has been declining for years, and
an increasing amount of research suggests that social media platforms could be partially to blame. But experts
continue to debate just how much impact they have.
Numerous studies demonstrate that adolescent rates of depression, anxiety and loneliness have skyrocketed in
the U. S. and elsewhere since around the time that smartphones and social media became ever-present.
Yet the role social media plays has been widely debated. Some researchers have sounded the alarm, arguing that
social media provides the most credible explanation for problems such as enhanced teen loneliness. Other researchers
have been sitting on the fence. In 2019, Jeff Hanceck, founding director of the Social Media Lab at Stanford University,
and his colleagues completed an analysis of 226 scientific papers dating back to 2006. They concluded that social
media was associated with not only a slight increase in depression and anxiety but also improvements in feelings of
belonging and connectedness.
Some recent studies have attempted to figure out the link between social media and mental health, asking, for
instance, whether social media use is causing depression or whether people are being more active on social mediabecause they’re depressed. In an attempt to present evidence, Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Alexey
Makarin and two of his colleagues conducted mental health surveys taken by college students across the country.
Their study, published in 2022, found that rocketing rates of depression and anxiety followed Facebook’s arrival.
Makarin says much of the harm they documented came from social comparisons: students viewed the online images
of their peers and believed them to “have nicer lives, party more often, have more friends and look better.”
“In total, there’s an increasingly clear picture that, indeed, social media has a negative impact on mental health,”
Makarin says. “We are not saying that social media can explain 100 percent of the rise of mental health issues... But
it could potentially explain a sizeable portion.”

The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a natural phenomenon that has fascinated humans
for centuries. These colorful displays in the night sky are primarily visible in the polar regions, particularly in countries
like Norway, Canada, and Iceland. The lights are caused by solar particles (粒子) interacting with the Earth’s
