Anaesthesia Inventor: Horace Wells Year: 1844 What Happened: In its salad days, N₂O was strictly a party toy, since it made people howl like hyenas (土狼). But a friend of the dentist took too much of the stuff at a laughing-gas stage show and cut his leg. However, the friend hadn’t realized he’d hurt himself. As a result, Nitrous oxide became an early form of anaesthesia. Saccharin Inventors: Constantin Fahlberg and Ira Remsen Year: 1879 What Happened: After spending the day studying coal tar (沥青) byproducts, Fahlberg left his Johns Hopkins laboratory and went to dinner. Something he ate tasted particularly sweet, which he traced to a chemical compound he’d spilled on his hand. Best of all, it contained no calorie. As a result, he cut Remsen and the university out of millions of dollars when he secretly patented the breakthrough discovery, saccharin. Silly Putty Inventor: James Wright Year: 1943 What Happened: During the war years, the General Electric engineer combined C H OSi and HBrO 6 18 2 3 in an attempt to find a cheap alternative to rubber for tank footboard (脚踏板). It didn’t work. But the scientists had fun bouncing and stretching the mix, when they weren’t using it to transfer comics onto paper. Kids ended up having fun playing with the Silly Putty too. Brandy Inventor: A Dutch shipmaster Year: 16th century What Happened: He used heat to concentrate wine in order to make it easier to transport, with the idea of adding water to recover it when he arrived. Unexpectedly, concentrated wine tasted better than watered-down wine. Since then, “Burnt wine” or “brandewijn” in Dutch, has become a big hit. Call it brandy, since after a few drinks of the stuff, there’s no way you can pronounce brandewijn so no waiter can understand what you’re ordering. 21. What can we learn about saccharin? A. It is calorie-free. B. It is costly. C. It is a lab byproduct. D. It is illegal.22. Which of the inventions is a toy for kids? A. Anaesthesia. B. Saccharin. C. Silly Putty. D. Brandy. 23. What do they have in common? A. They are eatable. B. They were invented in wartime. C. They are organic compounds. D. They were discovered accidentally. B When Chloe Chong thinks back to her childhood, her six-year-old self would never have dared to dream she would be where she is now. This weekend the 16-year-old will be competing at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, as part of the F1 Academy support race. Chloe’s decision to start racing came about when she was as young as five. She always wanted to go into a car, and that eventually happened when she begged and begged her parents, who weren’t into racing, really. “We once watched F1 together and that brought about a passion for sport in me,” recalled Chloe. Chloe did think about going straight into the F1 big league, but her dad reminded her of the hard work needed along the way. That’s how she started in karting (卡丁车运动) on the track where Lewis Hamilton, her hero, began, as all champions do. But moving from karting to racing cars has been a massive adjustment. The former builds the rhythm and the overtaking while there’s just a whole different level of detail about racing cars, which causes not only a lot more analysis but more communications with the engineer and the team. Nevertheless, more strategy is what Chloe thinks the biggest adjustment for her and probably the hardest part that has taken the most time. At 16, Chloe is too young to legally drive on British roads but has been flying along at 150mph in her F1 Academy car on the track this year. Chloe’s aims for the season were just to complete races, but after finishing sixth in her first race she created a really progressive moment that will live with her forever. The race in Texas this weekend is the only support race for the F1 Academy, but that will change from next year with the all-female junior category holding all its rounds as support races for it. Chloe feels these types of moves in motorsport are a massive step forward for women, especially in terms of budgets, which, she thinks, is one of the biggest challenges. 24. What caused Chloe to start racing? A. Her father’s permission. B. Her parents’ passion. C. Awakened desire in her. D. Lewis Hamilton’s encouragement. 25. What is the most difficult for Chloe from karting to racing cars? A. Devoting most time. B. Navigating a strategy-centered shift. C. Being faster and more rhythmic. D. Making analysis and communications. 26. Which of the following best describes Chloe? A. Determined and devoted. B. Generous and adventurous. C. Economical and practical. D. Responsible and agreeable. 27. What is Chloe’s attitude towards women’s motorsport? A. Realistic. B. Pessimistic. C. Idealistic. D. Optimistic.C How does the brain represent sentences? This is one of the fundamental questions in brain science, because sentences are an example of abstract structural knowledge that is not directly observable from speech. While all sentences are made up of smaller building blocks, such as words and phrases, not all combinations of words or phrases lead to sentences. Lise Meitner Group Leader Andrea Martin already had a theory on how the brain interprets linguistic structure, based on evidence from computer simulation. To further test this “time-based” model, Martin and colleagues set out to investigate whether the brain responds differently to sentences and phrases, and if this could suggest how the brain encodes abstract structure. The researchers created sets of spoken phrases (the red vase) and sentences (the vase is red), which were identical in duration and number of syllables in Dutch, and highly similar in meaning. They also created pictures with objects in five different colors. Fifteen adult Dutch speakers participated in the experiment. For each spoken stimulus (刺激), they were asked to perform one of three tasks in random order. The first task was structure-related, as participants had to decide whether they had heard a phrase or a sentence by pushing a button. The second and third task were meaning-related, as participants had to decide whether the color or object of the spoken stimulus matched the picture that followed. As expected, the activation patterns of neurons (神经细胞) in the brain were different for phrases and sentences, in terms of both timing and strength of neural connections. “Our findings show how the brain separates speech into linguistic structure by using the timing and connectivity of neural firing patterns. These signals from the brain provide a fresh basis for future research on how our brains create language”, says Martin. “In principle, the time-based method could be used for machine learning systems that interface with spoken language comprehension in order to represent abstract structure, something machine systems currently struggle with.” 28. Why is a question raised in Paragraph 1? A.To highlight the complexity of human brain. B.To predict the evolution trend of brain science. C.To explain the structural knowledge in sentences. D.To introduce the research conducted by Andrea Martin. 29. What does the underlined word “simulation” mean in Paragraph 2? A. Input. B. Investigation. C. Modelling. D. Testing. 30. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The setting of the research. B. The process of the research. C. The innovative aspects of the research. D. The scientific basis of the research. 31. What can be learned from Martin’s comments? A.The research approach can be further applied to AI. B.The findings of the research need to be further identified. C.Human brain performs much better than what computer struggles with. D.The brain’s capacity for interpreting sentences can be transferred to computer.D In 1990, Gibson and Bruce Sterling’s The Difference Engine imagined an alternative history where computers were built a century earlier with gears ( 齿 轮 ), helping popularize steampunk, a style of blending old and new technologies. How breathtaking when technology could be constructed from the past’s parts! But what if the world truly worked this way? Is digital perfection too much trustworthy? It might be better to see it not as a glimpse into the future, but as a legacy from the past, with all the problems handed down. In January 2023, the grounding of U.S. planes caused delays and losses when the outdated NOTAM system from 1920 failed. In a steampunk-inspired Doctor Who episode, heroes discover the engine of a spaceship is futuristic by appearance but a tortured, whale-like creature, driven like a horse under the whip. Those who grow curious face social pressure, punishment, and distractions to be kept ignorant. Steampunk tales revisit Victorian power structures of the authorities, where bosses promise a bright future while hiding the suffering that fuels it. These elements provoke reflection on today’s world: Who truly labors behind the scenes? Are they living the bright future promised to others? Steampunk machines, both extraordinary and romantic, often stir up sadness as their parts wear out, demanding constant attention to function. In Pushing Ice, researchers land on an alien spaceship, only to be trapped as it accelerates into deep space. With no choice, they construct a chain of gears to control its energy, inspecting every gear daily; even a single malfunction could lead to death. Ultimately, it is humans—weak, imperfect, tending to aging machines—that sustain us. This steampunk-like view of technology, blending old and new, is particularly relevant today, when modern technologies often distract us from their inner workings. Just as we receive instant Amazon orders, we may soon depend on AI, focusing on results without questioning the process. The risks of this relationship to technology are self-evident. Yet it’s not so hard to adjust, imagining a forest of gears turning, wondering if they fit. It’s all less perfect than it seems. 32. What does the NOTAM system illustrate? A.A proof of trustworthy digital perfection. B.A perfect mix of old and new technologies. C.A necessity of a breathtaking glimpse into future. D.A display of a future-like yet problematic heritage. 33. What is typical of steampunk stories? A. They draw on Victorian society. B. They are starred by the cruel bosses. C. They are fueled by a promising future. D. They think highly of behind-the-scene labors. 34. How is the passage mainly developed? A. By presenting facts. B. By analyzing reasons. C. By listing examples. D. By following time order. 35. What is the best title of the passage? A. The Perfect Machine: A Victory Fantasy B. Imperfect Progress: A Steampunk Insight C. Unfailing or not? Machines of Tomorrow D. Perfect or not? I jumped into the front seat, and Kyle dived into the back. “You made it! Good job!” Her voice not cheery, mom looked into the darkened sky. “Nikki, turn up the radio.” The announcer reported, “High wind warning for central and eastern Colorado. Gusts up to seventy- five miles per hour. Seek shelter inside.” I looked into the gloom but saw nothing dangerous. Then... Blam! Something slammed into the front window glass. Hard. Mom hit the brakes and the car came to a sudden stop. “Everyone OK?” We were both saying “yes,” but I gasped when I saw the little hawk (鹰) sprawled across the hood (引擎盖). Tears trickled down Mom’s cheeks. “I couldn’t stop in time. That hawk flew right into us.” She fumbled to release her seat belt and opened the door. A gust of wind whooshed in. “You two stay here,” she called over her shoulder, but I was already unlocking my seat belt and opening the door. And where I went, Kyle followed. A gust of wind blew the hawk across the hood. I reached out and caught it before it could fall to the ground. It was so soft, so warm. “Is it...? Is it... dead?” Kyle stammered. The hawk was not moving. “We’ve got to get out of this wind!” Mom shouted. “Load the hawk in the back.” She popped open the hatch. Kyle and I gently scooped up the hawk, our backs to the wind to protect it. The hawk’s feathers were shades of brown, with white wing tips. Maybe I saw it lift its head, just a little as we slid it into the car. Or was that just the wind? We finally pulled into the garage an hour later. Mom let out a big sigh. “Home safe!” Kyle and I jumped out of the car and peered at the hawk through the back window. “It’s alive! I saw the head move!” Kyle shouted, “Let’s name it Stormy.” We cupped the poor thing and cautiously carried it back home. One day, the center called to invite us to release Stormy together.
