Pop art, which emerged in the 1950s and rose in popularity throughout the 1960s, sought to
challenge theidea offine art.
AndyWarhol(1928-1987)
Andy Warhol is probably the most influential figure of PopArt. He became a famous celebrity
himself. Understanding ‘star-culture’, advertisement and the effect of the media, he made these the
core of his work. His screenprinted images of Marilyn Monroe, Soup cans, and thrilling newspaper
stories, quickly became synonymous (同义的) with Popart.
Roy Lichtenstein(1923-1997)
Roy Lichtenstein is one of the fathers of the PopArt movement. In November 2015, Christie’s
sold Lichtenstein’s ‘Nurse’ for a record $95.4 million. In this piece, as well as in other works, we
can see how the enlarged imagery of advertisements and comics with recognizable characters,
highlights the ironic(讽刺好笑的)images and situationsineveryday life.
英语试卷A第1页 共11页Mimmo Rotella (1918-2006)
Italian artist Mimmo Rotella, was one of the most important figures of post-war European art.

of torn posters, gathering them to create a tremendously expressive and powerful aesthetic (美感).
His works Semprelei Marilyn (2002) andVivaAmerica (1963)are easy to recognize.
James Rosenquist(1933-2017)
James Rosenquist can be considered one of the strongest and most influential modern Pop Art
artists. His work dived deep into advertising. He employed techniques which are conventionally
used to create CommercialArt. His works appear as an overwhelming mixture of fragmented (成碎

spaghetti. If you go toCentrePompidou,Paris, you can see his work President-Elect.

We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard
life, working part time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A
Dog’sWay Home”,has a hard-luck tale that could topthem all. Before her bigbreak, she was living
in a landfill(垃圾填埋场),rooting through garbagefor hernext meal.
Shelby’s big break came inApril 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving
in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she
recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the garbage dump. “I knelt down and just
said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I
was able to put her in my truck.” The pair headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff
began calling thenew resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away,Hollywood was looking for a dog to
play Bella in a film written byCathryn Michon.Thefind-a-Bella job went to dogtrainerTeresaAnn
Miller. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day,
英语试卷A第2页 共11页Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was
smiling happily,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the
ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter,
renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby trained for just over
three months before filmingbegan. Then they were together each day ontheset.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an
amazing dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come a long way from the garbage dump. But Buhler said when she saw Shelby
recently she just needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles
oftrash. “She’s exactly thesame, with thesame biggrin onher face.”Buhler said.

The story of The Emperor’s New Clothes is one ofAndersen’s best-known works. Cheaters fool
the emperor into believing they have made him a fantastic suit. Courtiers (侍臣) dare not say that
the emperor is naked; it takes a child to point out the obvious. How many companies have
continued carrying out expensive projects that were favoured by the CEO, even when other
managers have had doubts? The moral is that people are often too restricted by social practice to
statetheir views.
In his new book Rebel Ideas: The Power of Diverse Thinking, Matthew Syed argues that the
key to dealing with this problem is “cognitive (认知) diversity”, in other words, building a team of
people with different perspectives and intellectual backgrounds. It is not just about selecting people
英语试卷A第3页 共11页for teams from both sexes and various races. For example, a company can form a team by hiring
Cambridge politics graduates and Stanford software engineers regardless of their gender or skin
colour.
There is another element to selecting a good team: ensuring that those viewpoints are heard and
respected. A study of over 300 projects by the Rotterdam School of Management found that those
led by junior managers were more likely to succeed than those led by senior managers—maybe
because other team members were less scared about pointing out potential dangers to someone of
lower rank.
The ability to speak up within an organization, without fear of punishment, is known as
“psychological safety”. Mr. Syed cites a study of teams at Google, which found that self-reported
psychological safety was by far the most important factor behind successful teamwork at the
technology giant.
One way to overcome fear while brainstorming, for instance, is for everyone to write down
their ideas but ensure their names are never known. That way, opinions about thoughts are less
closely tied tothestatus of thethinkerand can be tested against each other withless fear orfavour.
8.What is thefunction ofthe story ofTheEmperor’s NewClothes?
A.Toconfirm itspopularity. B.Toargue for children’s wisdom.

D. Peoplefollowingtheir leaders unconditionally.
10.Whydoes ateam with ajuniormanager tend to succeed?
A. It encourages members to compete. B. It creates arelaxing atmosphere.
C. It allows members tovoice opinions. D. It thinkslittle ofsocial ranks.
11.Whatdowe knowabout “psychological safety”?
A. It is aterm invented byMr.Syed. B. It contributes todiversity thinking.

One ofthe biggest concerns in science isthat scientists themselves may influence theoutcomes
ofexperiments. Scientistshave come upwith all sorts ofstrategies totry toget ridof thisproblem.
But gathering thedata and running an experiment is not the only part of theprocess that can go
wrong. The methods chosen to analyse the data can also influence results. This point was
dramatically demonstrated by two recent papers published in a journal called Surgery. Despite
being based on the same data set, they drew opposite conclusions about whether using a particular
英语试卷A第4页 共11页piece of kit (成套设备) during appendix removal surgery reduced or increased the chances of
infection.
Anew paper, from a large team of researchers headed by Martin Schweinsberg, a psychologist
at the European School of Management andTechnology,in Berlin, helps cast some light on why.Dr
Schweinsberg gathered 49 different researchers by advertising his project on social media. Each
was handed a copy of a data set consisting of 3.9m words of text from nearly 8,000 comments made
onEdge. org, an onlineforum for chatty intellectuals.
In the end, 37 analyses were regarded sufficiently detailed to include. As it turned out, no two
analysts employed exactly the same method, and none got the same result. The problem was not
that any of the analyses was “wrong” in any objective sense. The differences occurred because
researchers chose different definitions ofwhat they were studying, and applied different techniques.
Truth, in other words, can be a slippery customer, even for simple-sounding questions. What to
do? One conclusion is that experimental design is critically important. Dr Schweinsberg hopes that
platforms such as Data Explained can help solve the problem as well as revealing it, by allowing
scientists tospecify exactly how they chose to perform their analysis, allowing those decisions to be
reviewed byothers. It is probably not practical, he admits, to check and re-check every result. But if
many different analytical approaches point in the same direction, then scientists can be confident
that theirconclusion istheright one.
12.Whydidthe two papers get different results ?
A. Someanalyses were conducted in anew way.
B. Someexperimental techniques were unreliable.
C.Variousdata were adopted randomly and indirectly.
D. Different methods were applied in thedataanalysis.
13.Which isTRUEaccording to Paragraphs 3and 4?
A. 2analyses were considered not good enough.
B. 37researchers were found to get different results.
C. 49researchers were gathered to discuss anissue.
D. 37analyses were regarded to usethesame method.
14.What does theunderlined part “a slippery customer”refer to?
A.Aperson who is extremelycritical.
B. Someonewhocan’tbe trusted.
C.Aperson who is willingto speak frankly.
D. Someone who can raise questions skillfully.
15.What can belearned from thewholepassage?
A. Different results comefrom thesameexperimental design.
B.Themore data are collected, the moretruthful theresults will be.
C. Data don’t lie, but they can lead scientists to oppositeconclusions.
D.The outcomes of experiments come from thecooperation ofscientists.
