For the past 18 years, Deng Xiaolan worked as a volunteer teacher in a village called Malan in
Fuping, Hebei Province. Born in 1943, Deng was raised by local farmers until she was three.
During Qingming Festival in 2003, Deng took part in an event in Malan in memory of martyrs(烈
士).When some local primary school students were organized to sing the national anthem(国歌) during
the ceremony, Deng found that only one or two of them could sing the anthem. So she decided to teach
the children music in the hope that they could leave the mountains and discover new things. When the
villagers told her the children had no talent for music, Deng said they simply needed to start to learn.
In 2004, Deng went to the village to teach the subject. When she founded the Malan Band in
2006, her friends in Beijing donated musical instruments to the village. Children in Malan had
instruments they had never seen before. They were amazed at the sounds they produced. Deng taught
them to sing and to play the violin and the piano. In 2006 the band was renamed Malan Flower
Children’s Chorus and two years later Deng brought them to perform in Beijing’s Zhongshan Park--the
first time the children had left the mountains. Over 18 years, Deng taught more than 200 children in
Malan and nearby villages, with many of them going on to attend college. She donated nearly 500
musical instruments and some 1,000 books to Malan.
Deng died on March 21, 2022. Just some six weeks before her death, 44 children from Malan and
nearby villages sang the Olympic Anthem at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games in
the Bird’s Nest in Beijing. It was Deng that helped bring these children deep in mountains onto such a
big stage.
4. Why did Deng Xiaolan teach music to the children in Malan?
A. To bring them to important ceremonies. B. To help them remember the local martyrs.
C. To show that they have a talent for music. D. To introduce them to the outside world.

A. The school bought musical instruments for kids.
B. Many kids received higher education.
C. Deng invited her friends to the village.

Discoveries at the famous Sanxingdui ruins in Southwest China show that the region’s ancient
Shu Kingdom Civilization shared similarities with the Maya.
The Sanxingdui ruins belonged to the Shu Kingdom that existed at least 4,800 years ago and
lasted more than 2,000 years, while the Mayan civilization built its city-states around 200 AD.
The bronze-made remains of trees unearthed at the ruins of the Shu Kingdom look like the
sacred ceiba tree, which symbolized the union of heaven, earth and the underworld in the Mayan
civilization. “They are very important similarities,” says Santos, a Mexican archaeologist (考古学家)
stressing that “the representations of tress in both cultures provide a symbolism that is very similar”.
The findings at the Sanxingdui ruins, considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of
the 20th century, also show a new aspect of Bronze Age culture, indicating the ancient civilization
already had technologies that were thought to have been developed much later.
While the time span between the Shu kingdom and the Mayan culture is great, the findings show
the closeness between the two civilizations. They developed in areas with similar climates and
reflected their worldview through related symbols. “In the end, man is still man, independent of time
and space. What we have is that, at this latitude (纬度), both the Shu people and the Mayans looked at
the same sky and had the same stars on the horizon,” the expert says.
One notable feature of the recent discoveries at Sanxingdui was the cross-subject work and
technology applied by teams of Chinese archaeologists, which allowed the unearthing of artifacts(文
物) as fragile as silk remains, which other types of less careful digging methods would not have been
able to do.
Cooperation between Chinese and Mexican archaeologists could benefit projects in the Mayan
world, where the rainy climate and humidity (潮湿) are problematic for the conservation of ruins.
“Every time our cultural knowledge increases, regardless of whether we speak one language or
another, what it shows us is that we continue to be sister cultures and, therefore, the exchange of such
knowledge is fundamental,” says Santos.
高三年级第一次诊断考试·英语试卷·共8页·第3页8. What is a similarity between the Shu Kingdom and Maya civilization?

A. silk was a common clothing material then
B. some technologies were developed much earlier
C. the Bronze Age started earlier than previously assumed
D. the Shu Kingdom and the Mayan world had close contact
10. What is a common challenge for the conservation of both ruins?
A. Damp weather. B. Positioning of ruins.
C. High latitude. D. Language barriers.
11. What is the focus of Santos quote in the last paragraph?
A. The future of the China-Mexico cooperation.
B. The benefits of speaking a different language.
C. The importance of the exchange of cultural knowledge.
D. The increasing sisterhood in culture between China and Mexico.

Elderly people have a higher chance of suffering from illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, and
heart disease. One common health problem that affects them is Alzheimer’s disease, which affects a
person’s memory, behavior, and thinking. Because of memory loss and behavioral changes, people
with Alzheimer’s may slowly become unable to take care of themselves, eventually requiring constant
care from family members or caregivers.
There is no cure for Alzheimer’s at the moment--drugs can only treat its symptoms.
But technology can improve the lives of those living with the condition by making it easier for
them to go about their daily activities. For example, tracking devices placed in watches or jewelry can
monitor where a person is. Automated reminders can also be stored in motion sensors and placed
around the house, and when a sensor detects movement, it can play a recorded voice message to
remind the person to lock the door or turn off the stove.
Alzheimer’s disease is a huge challenge, but we may be getting close to finding a solution. In the
future, it might be possible to treat Alzheimer’s without using drugs. A team of researchers in
Australia has created a form of technology that can send sound waves into the brain. These sound
waves help to clear waste in the brain that contributes to Alzheimer’s. The team has tested their
technology and found that it helped to restore memory in 75 percent of mice. Work on the technology
isn’t complete, but, if successful, it could prevent memory loss in people with Alzheimer’s. This really
高三年级第一次诊断考试·英语试卷·共8页·第4页does fundamentally change the understanding of how to treat this disease and researchers foresee a
great future for this approach.
12. Alzheimer’s is a disease that mainly affects the ____.
A. heart. B. blood C. muscles D. brain
13. Up to now, which can help Alzheimer’s patients who get lost easily?
A. Tracking devices. B. Automated reminders.
C. Restoring memory. D. Sending sound waves into the brain.
14. Which of the following can replace “contributes to” in the last paragraph?
A. Helps to cure. B. Helps to cause. C. Helps to worsen. D. Helps to prevent.
15. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Elderly people will begin to face many challenges.
B. Society should provide enough healthcare to elderly people.
C. There’s a need to better understand the cause of Alzheimer’s.
D. Technology might solve some problems of people with Alzheimer’s.
