Headphones are helpful. They are good for blocking out noise. And we use them to listen to music no
influencing others. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量) is too
loud. Studies show that one out of every 10 kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud
noise.
How Hearing Works
An ear has many working parts. Their job is to turn sound into something your brain can understand. And
there are cells (细胞) inside the car that help you hear. “We call them hair cells,” Jackie Clark says. “They look like
hairs standing up.” Clark is a professor at the University of Texas, She studies how loud noises affect (影响) our
ears.
Sound moves and makes the hair cells move back and forth. Loud noises can damage (损害) these cells by
getting them not straight anymore. Once the cells are damaged, they don’t grow back.
One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus. It’s a ringing in the cars. “It’s like someone is playing the violin for a long
time,” Clark says. “It’s difficult to get away from it.” And the damage affects more than your ears. It can cause
worries and stress.
How can you protect your ears? Keep the volume on your headphones low. You should be able to hear sounds
around you. And other people shouldn’t hear noise from your headphones.Measuring (测量) Sound
Sounds or noises are everywhere. Raindrops are 40 decibels (分贝) while fireworks are 140 decibels. What
about your headphones? They can go higher than 100 decibels. That’s too loud. To protect your ears, keep your
headphones at about half volume. And don’t listen too long. About an hour a day is safe.29.Which of the following can be put into ?

One day, Mrs. Smith was sitting in the doctor’s waiting room when a young boy and his mother came in. The

natural he seemed to be even though he lost one of his eyes. As they were waiting, Mrs. Smith took a chance to ask

crutches (拐杖), the boy noticed her leg. “Hey lady,” he called, “what is wrong with your leg?” The young boy’s

The Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) were a center of Buddhist life and some of the world’s great cultures for
hundreds of years. However, by the late Qing Dynasty they had been abandoned (废弃) and nearly forgotten and
many of the caves had become damaged by the weather. Around 1900, with the discovery of a library of thousands
of ancient documents, the caves received new interest from Chinese and foreign researchers. Unluckily, this
resulted in tens of thousands of items from the caves being taken to foreign museums.
In the 1940s, many researchers and artists visited the area to study traditional Chinese art. Copies of some of
the artwork painted by respected artists such as Zhang Daqian and Guan Shanyue helped people all over the
country learn about Dunhuang. These artists were also inspired by the artwork they saw in the caves and it began to
influence their painting styles. Others stayed in the desert for much longer. Chang Shuhong stayed for the rest of his
life—struggling to record the cultural treasures and protect them from the weather. As a result of their efforts, the
Dunhuang Academy was formed to protect and study the Mogao Grottoes.
In 1987, the Mogao Grottoes were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the caves are open to the
public, access (权限) is now limited in order to protect the artwork. However, the caves can be seen online in
digital versions (数码版) so that people around the world can study and enjoy them.
Though it is remote, the Mogao Grottoes continue to draw visitors. And just as the sand and desert have
survived largely unchanged through the centuries, this small art gallery in the desert has also survived largely
unchanged providing an amazing look at a world long ago past.
37.When did the Mogao Grottoes gain the world’s attention again?
A.Hundreds of years ago. B.In the late Qing Dynasty.
C.Around the beginning of the 20th century. D.In the late eighties of the 20th century.

39.When people can’t visit the caves, ________.A.they can do researches online B.they can enjoy the digital versions
C.they can watch copies in art galleries D.they can study them in foreign museums
40.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?

Once kids hit the teenage years, parenting becomes more difficult than ever. Establishing (建立) effective
house rules is one of the best ways to educate teenagers. House rules must respect teenagers’ needs to be
independent and make sure they do proper behaviors.
How can effective house rules be established?
First of all, get your teenager to take part in making the rules, which can help keep them following them. Ask
their opinion about what kinds of things they think are important when creating the rules and try to include some of
their ideas.
When creating the list of rules, don’t list every single rule imaginable. Instead, try to limit it to the ten most
important rules. I’ve seen some parents come up with several pages of rules which turn out to be more like a rule
book rather than a list. Remember, it is important to make the list easy to remember and to be a basic guide.
Then, it is important that you write out the list of rules and hang them in a prominent (显眼的) location.
Keeping the rules on the refrigerator or displayed somewhere everyone can see them is a good reminder. Revise the
rules whenever there’s a need, not very frequently though.
Give a clear explanation of the consequences (后果) when a rule gets broken. But ensure (保证) that none of
your consequences are equal to abusive (辱骂的) parenting. For example, take off the rule that says—“if you don’t
get home by 11 at night, make arrangements to stay elsewhere until morning”. Let helping with small household
chores like cleaning up their own rooms serve as consequences for disobeying rules.
Following these tips on establishing effective house rules accompanied by constant positive reinforcement (执
行) will help improve your teenager’s behavior. Hope you can direct your teenager to become a responsible and
independent person with the help of house rules!
