Headphones are helpful. They are good for blocking out noise. And we use them to listen to music no
influencing others. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause hearing loss if the volume (音量) is too
loud. Studies show that one out of every 10 kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The cause is loud
noise.
How Hearing Works
An ear has many working parts. Their job is to turn sound into something your brain can understand. And
there are cells (细胞) inside the car that help you hear. “We call them hair cells,” Jackie Clark says. “They look like
hairs standing up.” Clark is a professor at the University of Texas, She studies how loud noises affect (影响) our
ears.
Sound moves and makes the hair cells move back and forth. Loud noises can damage (损害) these cells by
getting them not straight anymore. Once the cells are damaged, they don’t grow back.
One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus. It’s a ringing in the cars. “It’s like someone is playing the violin for a long
time,” Clark says. “It’s difficult to get away from it.” And the damage affects more than your ears. It can cause
worries and stress.
How can you protect your ears? Keep the volume on your headphones low. You should be able to hear sounds
around you. And other people shouldn’t hear noise from your headphones.Measuring (测量) Sound
Sounds or noises are everywhere. Raindrops are 40 decibels (分贝) while fireworks are 140 decibels. What
about your headphones? They can go higher than 100 decibels. That’s too loud. To protect your ears, keep your
headphones at about half volume. And don’t listen too long. About an hour a day is safe.

My First Marathon (马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks,
leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then
hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running
was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle
against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating andnervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start
I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course
walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the
alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the
one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a
“marathon winner”.

A.To acknowledge the support of his teacher.
B.To amuse the readers with a funny story.
C.To show he was not talented in sports.
D.To share a precious memory.
20.How was the author’s first marathon?
A.He made it. B.He quit halfway.
C.He got the first prize. D.He walked to the end.
21.What does the story mainly tell us?

B.A winner is one with a great effort of will.
C.Failure is the mother of success.
D.One is never too old to learn.

On Monday, Mrs. Bunch told her students that they would take a test about the main countries and capitals onFriday. Students should be able to fill in the countries’ names on a world map and know each country’s capital.
Kevin and Matt both wanted to do well on the test, but they studied for the test in different ways.
Kevin waited until Thursday evening to begin studying. He thought he would be able to remember it better on
Friday in this way. On Thursday evening, Kevin took his study notes into the living room so he could watch TV
while studying. He read the list of the countries and capitals over and over again. Then he covered up the capitals
and tried to remember what they were as he read each country’s name. When he felt he knew most of the capitals,
he then took out his map and began studying where all the countries were. Since Kevin kept spending time on TV
shows, he did not finish his study until very late.
Matt, on the other hand, worked in a different way. On Monday evening, he made a set of cards. On one side
of the card, he wrote the name of the country and on the other side, he wrote the country’s capital. There was one
card for each country. He then made several copies of the map of the world with the names of the countries erased
(擦掉). Now he could practise writing the names. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Matt spent an hour after
supper in his room studying his cards and practicing filling in his maps. On his way to school each day, Matt took
his cards with him on the bus and practiced naming the capitals. He went to bed earlier on Thursday evening.
When the boys arrived at school on Friday, they joined their classmates and prepared to take the big test. As
Mrs. Bunch handed out the test, they both began to work very hard.
