Turning 18 is a big deal when you are a teenager. It means you are responsible for yourself and
don't need your parents' permission anymore. However, there are lots of opinions about when one
becomes an adult. Some are based on science, while others are personal opinions. While currently
the age is 18,science supports 25 as a more sensible age for adulthood, and I agree.
While studying the brains of teenagers, scientists have learned that when kids are around 18,
their prefrontal cortex (前额皮层) is only halfway developed. The prefrontal cortex helps people set
and achieve goals by receiving signals from different regions of the brain to process information and
adapting accordingly. That halfway development means that you still have things to learn and your
brains still have time to develop until the age of 25.
Some people think going off to college and living on your own qualify you as an adult, while
others may believe having a steady income and being able to afford to live on your own are what
make you an adult. Not everyone has a fortunate life where they have family that can provide
support; there are situations where you are forced to become an"adult" whether you like it or not.
In the foster care system, once a child turns 18, he or she is considered an adult and can no
longer receive state- sponsored support. These children are forced into a life where they have no
family or anyone to support them other than those who are there for them in the system.
Having a quality job will allow you to supply yourself with necessary things to live and help
you become a more mature and responsible person. Also, going through difficult times and realizing
life isn't as easy as it seems should qualify someone as an adult.
4. What is the author's attitude towards considering 25 as an age for adulthood?
A. Cautious. B. Positive.
C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
5. How does the prefrontal cortex work to help people set and achieve goals?A. By dealing with received signals and responding accordingly.
B. By collecting information from other parts of the body.
C. By sending instructions to different regions of the brain.
D. By transporting sensed emotions and making records.
6. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. To give a definition of adulthood.
B. To stress the importance of family support.
C. To prove not everyone lives a fortunate life.
D. To show opinions on becoming an adult are divided.
7. What is one standard qualifying you as an adult according to the author?
A. Setting up a family. B. Being responsible for your study.
C. Embracing the low moments in life. D. Buying yourself quality things to live.
C
Getting rid of dirt , in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing
fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease,
as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in.
Aparticular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French King had closed the bath
houses in his kingdom. So did the King of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich
and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously
dirty.Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the King ordered that, to avoid the attack of
disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the asset of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice
neighbour ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to
health.Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems
that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements
repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine.
Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their
children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary,
MaryRuebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家) encourages children to play in the dirt to
build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.
8. Why did the King of France close the bath houses in the 16th century?
A. He lived healthily in a dirty environment.
B. He thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in.C. He believed disease could be spread in public baths.
D. He considered bathing as the cause of skin disease.
9. What does the underlined word"asset"in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Advantage. B. Lack. C. Development. D. Shortcoming.
10. How does the text mainly develop?
A. By providing examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following the order of time. D. By following the order of importance.
11. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To stress the role of dirt.
B. To introduce the history of dirt.
C. To call attention to the danger of dirt.
D. To present the change of views on dirt.
D
What is the future of artificial intelligence (AI)? Will it be possible for robots to be
autonomous? If so, when will that happen and will it be a good thing? We asked four experts what
they think.
Expert A:I would say that we are quite a long way off developing the computing power for fully
autonomous AI. We will probably remain in control of technology. However, no one really knows
what will happen if machines become more intelligent than humans. They may help us, ignore us or
destroy us. I tend to believe AI will have a positive influence on our future lives.
Expert B:I have to admit that the potential consequences of creating something that can match
or surpass human intelligence frighten me. At some point in the near future, their intelligence may
well take off and develop at an ever-increasing speed. In the short term, there is the danger that
robots will take over millions of human jobs, creating a large number of unemployed people.
Expert C: Personally, I think it's fascinating to consider how we' ll speed up our evolution as a
species by improving our bodies. Imagine if you could put a computer inside our brain! Soon we' ll
be able to do just that and enhance our mathematical ability and our memory, and this idea is only
going to become more and more common. AI is also popping up in the world around us. Granted,
there have been a few problems. But progress always comes at a cost, and for me the advantages far
outweigh the disadvantages.
Expert D: I'm a member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots. Think of what's happening right
now: military machines are already being used to kill with very little human input. The next step will
be autonomous"murderbots", following orders but finally deciding who to kill on their own. It seems
clear to me that this would be completely dangerous for humanity. We need to be very cautious
indeed about what we ask machines to do.
12. What is Expert A's attitude towards the future of AI?A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Critical. D. Doubtful.
13. What is Expert B frightened of?
A. High future unemployment. B. Human intelligence in the future.
C. Large- scale poverty and social unrest. D. Human intelligence's being overcome.
14. Who thinks autonomous AI does more good than harm?
A. Expert A. B. Expert B. C. Expert C. D. Expert D.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. AI: Friends or Enemies? B. Technology: Safe or Dangerous?
C. The Good Influence of AI D. The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots

Are Your Clothes Causing Pollution?
Very small pieces of plastic, called microfibers, are polluting rivers and oceans. 16 Clothes
worn for outdoor activities and exercise are often made of artificial material, which is useful in
keeping
warm. But they contain very small plastic fibers, which may also be harming the environment when you wash them.
When people wash these clothes, very small pieces go down the drain (下水道) with the wash water.
17
Pollution caused by plastic is not new, but recent studies have shown the effect of microfibers in the environment.
They show very small microfibers are ending up in our waters, which may come from waste water treatment factories. A
study found them in fish from California.
Microfibers effect on food supplies.
Beyond the waterways, the researchers say microfibers may end up in soil and agricultural lands. 18 This
means there is much to be learned about microfibers and the environment. Some studies have shown that microfibers end
up inside sea animals, like oysters. 19 Researchers say that the fibers tend not to move into the tissue of the fish,
but it needs more study.
Steps to save or keep microfibers from the environment.
Until more information becomes known, there are steps to take to reduce the amount of microfibers in the
environment. People should use less of the artificial materials. If we already have those in our lives and we' re using
them, an important step would be washing them less. 20 A bag is being designed in which people can wash these
clothes. It traps the microfibers in the bag and it may be available for purchase soon.
A. New technology may also help.
B. Studies on microfibers in the environment.
C. They can also move around the atmosphere.D. Studies on how many of the microfibers are released.
E. The source of these microfibers may surprise you: your clothes.
F. Washing machines keep microfibers from escaping with wash water.
G. So if these microfibers have been found in fish and seafood, are they safe to eat?

One winter night, a snowstorm swept over Minnesota. Residents did not anticipate such a
strong storm, so many were unprepared. In Lucas’ case, the roof of his house broke, and he hadto place buckets (水桶) under a large hole to keep the falling snow from filling his home. He
worked as a cashier at the local store, and while he wanted to stay home the day after the storm,
he needed to fill in for those who couldn't go to work.
There were only a couple of people in the store, as it was challenging to cope with deep
snow in the streets. They bought a lot of food just in case of more snowstorms.
After serving a couple of adults, Lucas came across a boy, about 11 years old, with a cart(推
车)full of goods. Once Lucas gave him the total, the boy realized he was two dollars short to meet
the payment. “Oh no, I miscalculated the total,” the boy said, looking around the store thinking of
what to do. After a couple of seconds, Lucas grew angry. “Well? Are you paying for the goods or
not? You' re holding up the line!” he shouted.
“I'm sorry. I am two dollars short. I need to take some things out of my cart. Please serve the
others first while I sort things out,” the boy explained, walking to the side to let other customers go
ahead.
Lucas thought the boy was playing tricks on him, especially after checking out so many items
from the store. Then he saw the tennis rackets(球拍) fixed to the boy's feet and this made him
curious.Once Lucas had served all the customers, he decided to approach the boy. “Why do you have
tennis rackets fixed to your feet?” he asked.
“This is the only way I could get through the snow on the way to the store. I live with my old
grandmother, and I needed supplies for her and our other neighbours. My neighbours’ house was
covered in snow. I wanted to help them,” the boy explained sadly.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。Lucas gave the boy two dollars and walked the boy back to his house.
The next day, while wondering how to fix the roof, Lucas suddenly heard a knock on the door.第一部分

closing speech.
In the speech, you'd be expected to comment on the performances of the speakers or talk about how to grow up
healthily. Suggestions on how to improve our spoken English will also be welcome.
Looking forward to your reply
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
