The best thing to start your day is a good breakfast. In fact, many people believe
that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In China, porridge with pickles (咸菜),
baozi, noodles, soybean milk and youtiao are common breakfast foods. What are
breakfasts in other countries like? Let's take a look!
US
In the US, a good Sunday morning starts with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon or juicy
sausages, and soft pancakes with butter and sweet syrup on top. On busy weekdays,
most people in the US like to eat cereal with milk, bread and fruit for breakfast. Some
people also drink coffee.
Canada
Canada is the largest producer of maple syrup. People usually have pancakes with
maple syrup for breakfast. Canadian bacon is a popular dish for breakfast as well.
Canadian bacon is quite unlike the crispy bacon of the United States. It tastes more like
ham and is served in thin round slices.
Britain
The British breakfast is similar to the American breakfast. A basic British
breakfast consists of fried eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, baked(烘) beans, and
tomatoes. These foods are popular among young people in Britain. Usually, British people
have coffee, tea or milk to drink. Some people also like to drink orange juice.
Japan
Most people in Japan these days—at least in big cities—eat a quick Western-style
breakfast like eggs, toast, juice and coffee. Those who prefer more traditional foods are
likely to have tea and miso soup with rice. Steamed rice is necessary for a Japanese-
style breakfast. People also add nori seaweed or a little raw egg to their rice.

In Canada, you can find dogs, cats, horses, etc. in almost every family. These
are their pets. People love these pets and have them as their good friends. Before they
keep them in their houses, they take them to animal hospitals to give them injections(注
射) so that they won't carry disease. They have special animal food stores, though they can
get animal food in almost every kind of store. Some people spend around two hundred
Canadian dollars a month on animal food. When you visit people's houses, they would be

that almost every family has a bird feeder in their garden. All kinds of birds are
welcomed to come and have a good meal. They are free to come and go and nobody is
allowed to kill any animal in Canada. They have a law against killing wild animals. If you
killed an animal, you would be punished. If an animal happened to get run over by a
car, people would be very sad.
People in Canada have many reasons to like animals. One of them might be:Their
family ties are not as close as ours. When children grow up,they leave their parents and
start their own life. Then the old will feel lonely. But pets can solve this problem.
They can be good friends and never leave them alone.

Human beings have used tools for a very long time. In some parts of the world
you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made
these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one
of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them
for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood.
Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat-
eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily.
Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew
bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The
stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most
important. Some scientists say that it was the key to the success of mankind.
Since 1960 a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip (硅芯片). It
is smaller than a finger nail, but it can store lots of information. It is an electronic brain.
Every year these chips get cleverer, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less.
They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many
ways. In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way. Machines will
do everything for us. People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it?
Human beings used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life
changed very little in that time. We have used silicon chips for only a few years, but
7life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will
the world be like two million years from now?
28.From Paragraph 1, we can know ________.
A.why early human beings cut skin from dead animals
B.how early human beings discovered the tools
C.what early human beings used the tools for
D.what food early human beings stored
29 . The stone chip is thought to be the most important tool because it
________.
A.was very important to the development of mankind
B.led to the invention of machines in the early time
C.developed cooking abilities of mankind
D.was one of the first tools of mankind
30.The silicon chip is mentioned in the passage to ________.
A.show the changes of tools
B.introduce a new kind of tool
C.give an example of using tools
D.compare the effects of two kinds of tools
31.At the end of the passage the author seems to suggest that life in future is
________.
A.out of order B. less colorful C.hard to predict D. full of meanings

As I stuck in the mud (泥), with my bike on top of me, I wondered what had
forced me to come here. Madagascar is not a good place for a cycling holiday: one of the
world's poorest countries, only 11 percent of roadway is paved (铺). South of the town of
Antalaha, where I started, the road was in worse condition.
I appeared from a week in the wilderness and reached the start of the Route National 5 at
Maroantsetra, but my dream of a smooth road and speed was suddenly destroyed by
mud.The “worst road in the country” changed my bicycle into a burden (负担) for
days. Finally, I_was_claimed_by_the_road. Tired. Alone.
As I wiped (擦) the mud from my face and looked upwards, I was greeted by a
Malagasy man. He helped me stand up and smiled playfully while he pointed to my
8bike, which sat next to his. I started again. But I fell again in the mud. Angrily, I told
him to go on, but if he understood he showed no sign of it. His smile forced me
back onto the bike. We continued like this for hours. But I fell less. Studying my
quick guide, slowly I learned. As we passed through a village, a group of children saw
me and shouted loudly. His only words were: “Their parents tell them while people steal
and eat them. Funny, no?”
I tried to ask why, but he had already set off. I tried to catch up; as I got closer,
he took it as a challenge and sped up. We raced along the road. I rode a little faster and I was
just behind, about to catch up with him. With a smile, he sped up and was away,
leaving me breathless.
32.What was in the author's mind when he was in the mud?

B.The author decided to ask for help.
C.The author lay on the road for a rest.
D.The author had no confidence to ride on.
34.How did the Malagasy man help the author?
A.By showing him the right way.
B.By wiping the mud from his bike.
C.By riding in front of him all the way.
D.By teaching him how to ride in the mud.
35.What's the best title for the text?

Long long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play

under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.
As time went by,the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.
One day,the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad.“Come and play with
me,” the tree asked the boy gently.
“I am no longer a kid;I won't play around trees anymore,”the boy replied.“I
want toys. I need money to buy them.”
“Sorry, but I don't have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell
them. Then, you will have money.”The boy was so excited that he picked all the
apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn't come back after that.
The tree was upset.
One day,the boy returned and the tree was so joyful.“Come and play with me,”
the tree said.
“I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for

Dear classmates,
I am sorry to learn that many of us have spent too much time learning English on the
Internet, which can obviously do harm to our bodies, especially eyesight. Thus,as the class
representative in English,I want to offer some suggestions.
First,we can limit online study time. Second,we should turn to various methods of
English learning. Online English learning should be combined with offline English learning.
In fact,we have a lot of things to do,such as doing written assignments and practising
spoken English.
In short, let’s study together healthily and effectively.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
Many years later, the boy finally returned.Feeling tired,he went to see the apple tree.
At the sight of him,the tree said regretfully,“I am sorry, boy, but now I no longer have
anything for you,no apples,no branches,no trunk.”“It doesn’t matter. I have no intention
of getting anything from you this time. As you know,I am getting old and nothing is better
than a comfortable place to rest,”said the boy. Hearing this, the tree smiled with relief,
adding,“My dying roots is the right place for you. Please come here and have a seat.”The
boy did as was told and the tree burst into tears, due to the fact that she could still devote
herself to her boy.
Paragraph 2:
The apple tree is our mother. When we are young, she tries her utmost to take care of us
and play with us. When we grow up,we leave her for some reasons and only come back
when necessary or in trouble. But she is always there, waiting for us and ready to offer what
she owns without complaint. Never does she ask for rewards, instead,it is our happiness
that she desires for. So,try to put ourselves in her shoes and learn to show concern for her.
