Types of streets play a crucial role in shaping the character and functionality of cities. Beyond mere
passages for vehicular movement, streets are dynamic spaces that reflect the cultural, social, and
economic fabric of a society. Additionally, they connect neighbourhoods, commerce, and communities.
From bustling commercial avenues to peaceful residential lanes, the diverse types of streets create a
dynamic urban landscape.
Main Arterial Roads
Wide thoroughfares serve as the primary transportation routes in urban areas. Designed to facilitate
the smooth flow of vehicular traffic and often house major commercial and business establishments,
they form the backbone of the urban transportation network, connecting different parts of the city and
supporting economic activities.
Narrow Alleys and Bylanes
Winding passageways offer a glimpse into the cultural and historical heritage of a city. Lined with
boutiques, homes, and sometimes hidden gems — underrated high-quality shops, these streets contribute
to the unique character of a city, preserving its historical and cultural identity.
Commercial and Market Streets
Commercial and market streets are vibrant hubs that form the lifeblood of urban areas. They
significantly boost a city’s economic vitality, foster entrepreneurship and community engagement, and
contribute to a lively, diverse, and socially rich urban environment.
Residential Lanes
Residential lanes are quiet, tree- lined streets nestled within neighbour hoods. Characterised by a
mix of housing types and often including shared spaces for residents, these streets contribute to a sense
of community and provide a peaceful escape from the urban hustle, creating a balanced living
environment.
1.What do Main Arterial Roads function as in urban areas?
A.The core framework of the transportation network.
B.The connection of all city parts.
C.The symbol of unique culture.
             D.The bridge linking different cities.
2.Where can you find “hidden gems” in a city?
A.On Main Arterial Roads.
    B.In Narrow Alleys and Bylanes.
C.On Commercial and Market Streets.
    D.In Residential Lanes.
3.What does the author suggest about the diverse types of streets in cities?
A.They merely serve as routes for vehicle movement.
B.They play the same role in the urban environment.
C.They jointly create a dynamic and rich urban landscape.
D.They should be redesigned to improve commercial development.

Zhang Xue, a Chinese male motorcycle designer and founder of ZXMOTO (Zhang Xue
Motorcycle), has shocked the global motor industry with his independent high-performance
motorcycles. For decades, top motorcycle races like the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) were
completely controlled by European, Japanese and American brands such as Ducati and Yamaha. Thanks
to Zhang Xue’s continuous efforts, Chinese motorcycles have broken this long-term monopoly.
In 2024, Zhang Xue founded his own brand in Chongqing, determined to build world-class
motorcycles with fully self-developed engines. He refused simple copying and spent years overcoming
technical difficulties in high-speed engine development and lightweight design. His team tested
thousands of parts and kept improving their products to meet strict international racing standards.
In 2026, Zhang Xue’s 820RR-RS racing motorcycle stepped onto the world stage. The brand signed
Valentin Debis, a 34-year-old French rider. Though once rejected by international teams for being “too
old”, Debis achieved unbelievable success on Zhang Xue’s motorcycle. From March to May in 2026, he
won five championship titles in different WSBK races, beating top competitors from famous foreign
brands.
These five historic victories drew global attention to Chinese motorcycle manufacturing. More
importantly, they proved that China could produce high-end motorcycles with core self-developed
technology. Zhang Xue believes that constant innovation and strict quality control are the key to success.
His goal is to make Chinese motorcycles respected worldwide and bring more glory to China in
international motor sports.
4. What was the situation of WSBK before Zhang Xue’s success?
A. Chinese brands won most races. B. Foreign brands dominated the races.
C. Few teams took part in the competition. D. Races were held only in European countries.
5. What can we learn about Zhang Xue from Paragraph 2?
A. He copied foreign engine technology. B. He aimed to make top-level motorcycles.
C. He started his brand over ten years ago. D. He sold his products mainly abroad.
6. Why did Valentin Debis surprise the world?
A. He became the oldest rider in WSBK history.
B. He designed high-quality racing motorcycles.
C. He won five titles riding Chinese motorcycles.
D. He joined Zhang Xue’s team at a very young age.
7. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce a successful Chinese motorcycle brand and its founder.
B. To compare different famous motorcycle brands around the world.
C. To describe the strict rules of international motorcycle races.
D. To explain how French riders win global motor races.

Nearly a year ago, NASA announced that a rock spotted on Mars by its Perseverance rover
contained some of the best signs yet that ancient microbial (微生物的) life may have once existed on the
Red Planet. The rock provides clear evidence for water, organic matter, and chemical reactions that
could provide an energy source, Laurie Leshin, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which
operates Perseverance, posted on the social media platform X. “This is the kind of discovery you hope
for — where mind-bending observations make your heart beat just a little faster,” she added.
Catch your breath, everyone. There are a lot of maybes that won’t be resolved anytime soon, if
ever. And there’s a long history of Martian rocks getting some of the life on our planet a little too
excited.
Perhaps the most famous Martian rock is Allan Hills 84001, a meteorite ( 陨石) discovered in
Antarctica. In a 1996 Science paper, researchers suggested it held nannofossils (纳米化石) of bacteria.
The news spread far and wide and even led to a congratulatory speech by then-President Bill Clinton.
The debate continues, but most researchers today believe the fossil like features arose without life.
Similar news has followed rocks found by earlier Mars rovers, including Curiosity, which, with its
onboard chemical lab, has detected all sorts of organic molecules during its long trip in  Gale crater.
Perseverance lacks such an onboard lab. Its job is to drill rocks and put them in capsules that could
eventually be returned to Earth for detailed study. Compared with  Curiosity’s, its instruments are more
limited. Still, they provided enough information to be excited about the Cheyava Falls rock it just
drilled.
Running through the rock are white veins of calcium sulfate — minerals that spark out of water.
Scans by a rover  instrument also indicate the rock contains organic compounds. Such carbon-bearing
molecules are essential building blocks of life, but they can also be formed by nonbiological processes.
Of most scientific significance were mineral “leopard spots” in the rock, millimeter-size whitish spots
ringed by black material, which seem to contain iron and phosphate (磷酸盐). On Earth, such spotting
can form when organic molecules react with hematite, or rusted iron. These reactions, in turn, can fuel
microbial life.
Although there is no doubt about the scientific value of the new discovery, the immediate
announcement about the rock by JPL has raised some eyebrows.
8.What do we know about NASA’s discovery by its Perseverance on Mars?
A.A rock spotted contains ancient microbial life.
B.Concrete evidence of organic substances is found.
C.Observations demonstrated are not exciting.
D.Chemical reactions can provide a new energy source.
9.What was the significance of the Allan Hills 84001 meteorite?
A.It unlocked the first rock to show signs of life on Mars.
B.It revealed the likely existence of nannofossils of bacteria.
C.It led to the finding of the existence of living bacteria.
D.It confirmed the first meteorite discovered on Mars.
10.Why is the Cheyava Falls rock vital to scientists?
A.It contains high amounts of minerals.
B.It indicates organic compounds.
C.It fuels microbial life.
D.It carries mineral “leopard spots”.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.NASA found possible signs of life on Mars
B.A heart-beating discovery attracted public attention
C.NASA sent another rover to explore Mars
D.A debate-heated discovery clarified ancient life
                                     D
We were sailing on a white boat through the clear waters of Turks and Caicos. The view was so
beautiful that even my teenage daughter, Kavya, paused her usual rudeness to admire the scenery and
breathe in the salty air.
Instead of relaxing by the pools, we had spent the previous day training for our big scuba (潜水)
trip. We took a course with written tests and did two exhausting pool practices. Now, the moment had
arrived. Our instructor was about to place the helmets (头盔) on our heads. I took a deep breath. This
was it — my chance to connect with Kavya through a new experience, something we could finally
share.
But suddenly, Kavya pulled my arm. Her face showed the same worried look she had during math
homework. I could sense her emotions tightening under her diving suit. Just as the instructor
approached, she whispered, “Dad, can I quit?” The waves sounded louder, the gear ( 设备) heavier.
Surprisingly, I didn’t say what I normally would: “Quitting is not an option!” I even stopped myself
from thinking, “But this was my plan.” Trying to give her a gentle hug in the heavy gear only resulted in
me splashing water all over her and making us both laugh awkwardly.
When she was little, connecting with Kavya was effortless. I knew everything about her, and she
always joined my adventures with pure excitement. But as she grew older, she discovered her own
interests, drifting away from mine. What followed were sighs, eye-rolls, and half- hearted “I guess so”
replies. I had hoped this scuba course would bring us closer again. I didn’t expect her quitting to hit me
so hard or so suddenly.
Even without the dive, we enjoyed our vacation. We swam, collected seashells, and played word
games. In those slow, quiet moments, I realized joy isn’t only in big adventures. It wasn’t the moment of
closeness I had imagined — but it turned out to be exactly the one we needed.
12.Why did the author train hard for the diving trip?
A.To impress the instructor.
B.To relax in natural beauty.
C.To grow closer to his daughter.
D.To challenge himself physically.
13.Which of the following best describes the author according to paragraph 3?
A.Strict and determined.
B.Insightful and inspiring.
C.Resourceful and encouraging.
D.Thoughtful and understanding.
14.Which could be a suggestion from the author to parents of teenagers?
A.Be adaptive. B.Be courageous. C.Be protective.
D.Be adventurous.
15.What key message is expressed in the story?
A.Nature helps to bridge generation gaps.
B.Bonding happens naturally in shared moments.
C.Scheduled adventures ruin true happiness.
D.Connections rely heavily on thoughtful planning.

First of all, what exactly is a spa? Traditionally, spas were places where you “took the waters” –
meaning you drank some of the water or bathed in it.

 17

In general, the term is often used to
refer to a commercial establishment that provides a wide range of services for health, fitness, weight
loss, beauty and relaxation. This may include exercise classes, massage, mud baths, body treatment, and
so on.

 18

In Japan, traditional hot springs have attracted visitors for centuries. And thermal (温
泉) baths have been found in the ruins of the Cretan palace of Knossos that date back to the 2nd
millennium BC.

 19

They established a number of towns around thermal waters. In the 18th century, spas
became the fashionable places to go on holiday. Spas in the UK were very popular with British royals.
A typical day in Carlsbad in the 19th century went as follows. Visitors got up at 6:00 am to drink
the waters and be serenaded by a band. Next, came a light breakfast, a bath in the waters, and then
lunch. In the afternoon, visitors went sight-seeing, walked or attended concerts.

 20

  Guests
returned to their hotels at about 9 pm to rest until six the following morning. Visitors would stay for as
long as a month.
Today, spa treatments are more popular than ever, although drinking the water isn’t as common as it
used to be. But of course, if you want some mineral water, you can always get a bottle of Perrier from
the mini-bar!
A.Here’re some tips for you.
B.Perhaps you need to go to a spa!
C.Of course, there’s nothing new about spas.
D.After dinner, there were musical performances.
E.Spas were introduced to the UK in the 17th century.
F.But nowadays, a “spa” can mean a variety of things.
G.It was the Romans who made spas popular in Europe.

第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a dark and stormy night, an elderly man and his wife hurried into a small hotel in
Philadelphia, USA.The rain lashed down from the sky, soaking through their coats and messing
up their gray hair. Desperate to get out of the bitter cold and heavy rain, the couple approached the
front desk with faint hope of securing a room for the night. The husband, his voice slightly
trembling from the chill, asked politely, “Could you possibly give us a room here?”
The clerk, a young and friendly-looking man with warm eyes, glanced at the exhausted
couple and replied with a sincere tone, “I’m truly sorry, but all our rooms are fully taken.” Hearing
this, the couple’s faces fell, and disappointment clouded their eyes — they had wandered through
the rain for hours, and this was their last hope. Just as they were about to turn away frustratedly,
the clerk spoke up again: “I can’t send a nice couple like you out into the rain at one o’clock in the
morning. Would you perhaps be willing to sleep in my room? It’s not exactly a luxury suite, but
it’s clean and warm enough to make you folks comfortable for the night.”
The couple immediately declined the kind offer, feeling reluctant to trouble a stranger. The
clerk then explained that several large conventions were being held in the town, and every hotel
room within miles was occupied. “Don’t worry about me — I’ll make out just fine by sleeping in
the lobby,” the young man insisted with a reassuring smile. Touched by his generosity, the couple
finally agreed to stay.
The next morning, as the elderly man settled the bill at the front desk, he looked the clerk in
the eye and said earnestly, “You’re the kind of manager who should be in charge of the finest hotel
in the country. Maybe someday, I’ll build one just for you.” The clerk laughed softly, thinking it
was a kind but casual remark, and the three of them shared a warm chuckle. As the couple drove
away, they talked about how exceptional the helpful clerk was — finding people who were both
friendly and selfless was truly rare in such a hurried world.
