Unlike traditional mosquitonets that simply form a physical barrier to keep mosquitoes out,Lina'ssmartnetis designed towarnpeople when tiny holes appear before mosquitoes canenter.

With thin fiber sensors and a microcomputer, the device detectssmall damages on the net and senda warning message to the phone. Creating the prototype was difficult and the hardest part was adjustingthe sensors. "I had two designs, and my first design completely foiled/5 she said. PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, are found in drinking water, food, and household products.

These chemicals have been linked to negative health outcomes, including certain cancers.

PFAS are widely used because they are highly durable and can resist both water and oil. However, they do not break down easily in the environment and can linger in the human body. According to theAgency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, nearlyeveryoneintheUnited Stateshas PFASintheir blood.

Eliminating PFAS is almost impossible, andresearchersarestilldeterminingwhichactionsaremost effective atreducingexposure. However, studiesshowthatwhenexposuredecreases,PFASlevels in the body can gradually decline over severalyears.

Drinking watercan be an important source of exposure. If testing shows high PFAS levels in waterand the community has not installed filtration (过滤)systems, it is advisable to purchase a household filtercertified to treat PFAS contamination(污染物).

According to the NationalAcademiesreport, diet is likely the primary way people are exposed toPFAS in places without drinkingwatercontamination.Somemeat, dairyproductsandchickeneggshave been found to contain PFAS chemicals, but according to the Food and Drug Administration, most detectable PFAS were found in seafood. Produce grown with contaminatedwatercanalsobecomeasource ofexposure.

PFAS have been widely used in consumer products because they make items waterproof, slippery, durable, or stain-resistant. They maybefoundincookware, waterproofclothing, carpets, tablecloths, and other household products. However, there is currently insufficient evidence that simply changing consumer products significantly reduces PFASexposure.

Fortunately, many manufacturers are phasing out PFAS. Companies such as 3M and BASFhavereducedorstoppedtheiruse, whilemajorretailers(零售商)andbrandsarealsoworkingtomaketheir products PFAS-free. ResearchshowsthatastheproductionanduseofcertainPFASdeclined, levelsof those chemicals in Americans5 blood also fell over time, which can be conduciveto publichealth.

28.Why are PFAS widelyused?

A.Theyare watery.B. They are chemically stable.

C. Theyareunbreakable.D. They are readily available.

29.Which of the following may contain higher levels ofPFAS?

A.Filtered water. B. Cotton clothes. C. Nonstick cookers. D. Freshwaterfish.

30.What does the underlined word “conducive''in the last paragraph mean?

A.Subject.B.Favorable.

31.What can be a suitable title for thetext?

A.PFAS: Sources ofExposure

C. PFAS: Application andReduction

C.Devoted.D. Related.

B. PFAS: Forever Pollutants

Hubs(中枢)ofimmunecellsintheskullmayhelptodefendourbrainagainstdisease. The discovery, based on a study into the brains of mice and human geneticdata, impliesthat targetingthesehubs with drugs could bring new treatments forconditionswhereimmunecellsactinawrongway, such as braincancer.

“It's an important step forward in understanding the brain?s immune response: saysVesa

KiviniemiattheUniversityofOulu in Finland, who wasn't involved in the study. He notes the findingalso helps research on brain infections, inflammation and diseases thatdamagethenervoussystem.Immune cells called Tcells and B-cells areactivatedtoprotectthebrainwhentheyspotthreatsigns, like piecesoftumours inthe lymphatic(淋巴的)system. JonathanKipnis andhisworkmateshave uncovered a new way of activating thesecells.

By imaging and analysing mouse skulls, the teamfoundthatB-andTcellsgatherwithimmunecellscalledantigen-presentingcells(抗原呈递细胞)inimmunehubsatthebackoftheskull.These hubsare similar to lymphnodes, where antigen-presentingcellsexpose threats to T-and B-cells. Basedon previous human gene data, researchers believe such immune hubs also exist in humans.Tcells canactivateand assist B-cells inthe human skull, though further studies on dead people's skulls are neededto confirm theconclusion.

Tb test the hubs5 protective function, researchers conductedcontrastexperiments.Theyinjectedcancercells into mice5s brains. Half the mice received a drug to block the activation of skull immunecells, while the others received salt-water placebo injections. The drug-treated mice lived 25 daysonaverage, shorter than the 30 days of the placebo group. In another test, drugs boostingimmunecellactivation extended mice's survival timeby10days.Thisprovesimmunehubscangenerateanticancer immune responses.

If confirmed in humans, these skull immune hubs will provide new treatment ideas for various brain-related diseases, from brain cancer to long-lasting inflammation. The next step, the team says, isto examine human skulls directly and map the hubs5 exactlocations.

32.What can we learn about immunehubs?

A.They can treat braincancer.

B.They can damage the nervoussystem.

C.They can work like antigen-presentingcells.

D.They can help treat immune-related diseases viadrugs.

33.What did Kipnis's team find in the mouseskulls?

A.A new drug used for brain cancertreatment.

B.Immune hubs formed at the back of theskull.

C.Lymph nodes exposing threats to immunecells.

D.Tumour pieces travelling in the lymphaticsystem.

34.Why did researchers carry outcontrast experiments?

A.To find new types of cancer drugs.

B.To study the activation rules ofgenes.

C.To prove the effectiveness of immunehubs.

D.To confirm the existence of human immunehubs.

35.What will the researchers do next according to the lastparagraph?

A.Locate immune hubs in humanskulls.

B.Develop new drugs for braindiseases.

C.Compare immune hubs in humans andmice.

D.Apply the findings to brain cancertreatment.
