Old Crafts Meet Digital Art

From October 16 to 18, a big festival about intangible cultural heritage took place in Chaoyang, Liaoning Province. Intangible cultural heritage means old crafts and arts that people pass down.

At the festival hall, art met science. When visitors touch a drum, a dragon boat runs across a big screen. When they wave a stick, a golden dragon dances in the air. They can put paper cuttings on a light table too.

Zhang Juyue, an embroidery master, came from Sichuan. She said old crafts can live with new ideas. The festival also picked thirty young inheritors. They will carry old skills into the future.

A Big Arts Festival Opens in Shanghai

On Saturday evening, October 17, a big arts festival opened in Shanghai. It is the 25th China Shanghai International Arts Festival, and it will last for weeks.

During the festival, the city will hold almost 400 shows and exhibitions. In total there will be about 1,100 performances. Artists from more than 80 countries and areas will come. Some shows will happen in streets and even over water, so people can watch them easily.

The festival also helps youngartists. Nine new art projects by young creators were chosen this year. Meanwhile, the new Shanghai Grand Opera House opened its doors. It hopes to become a world-famous stage for opera.

A Journey to the Deep Sea

China's submersible "Jiaolong" can carry people deep under the sea. This time it worked with its mothership, Shenhai-1, far away in the western Pacific Ocean.

On October 15, it made its 470th dive. It sank about 2,750 meters down. Through the round window, people saw shrimp, fish, corals and sponges in the dark blue sea. The water there is cold and dark, but many animals live there.

Pilot Tang Jialing drove "Jiaolong" and used a robot arm to pick up rocks. After the long trip, the submersible returned to the ship with rocks and sea water. Each dive helps people know the deep sea better.
