I’m a smart helmet. I help achieve greater safety for motorbike riders. My cameras can show things around them. I can also warn them when they are riding too close to passing cars.

Xu Beihong was a pioneer of 20th century Chinese art, well known for his traditional ink-and-wash paintings of horses and birds. He was one of the first Chinese artists to explore the techniques (技巧) of oil paintings.

Born in 1895 in Yixing, Jiangsu, Xu Beihong showed a strong interest in arts since childhood. He began studying the Chinese Classics from his father when he was six. Xu spent much time helping out on his family’s farm. He would paint what he noticed in nature. In 1912, his father fell ill. Xu became the breadwinner of the family and began teaching arts in all kinds of schools. In 1917, he began to teach at Peking University at the invitation of Cai Yuanpei.

Beginning in 1919, Xu studied oil painting and drawing in Paris. His travels around Europe allowed him to explore Western art techniques. He studied the bone structure (骨架) and movement of horses. Such knowledge is clear in his works. But his excellent ink brushwork truly brought his horses to life. Through his art, Xu gave the world a new way of understanding horses, celebrating their beauty, strength and spirit.

In 1923, Xu’s oil painting was shown at the French National Art Exhibition (展览). Later, he received invitations from many European cities to hold exhibitions internationally.

After returning home in 1927, Xu took an active part in art education. He focused on developing creativity with students. He also encouraged his students to learn from foreign artworks. “There is no other way to learn art, but to keep practising,” Xu once said.

In 1933, Xu organized an exhibition of modern Chinese painting in Paris. It drew in lots of attention and was then moved to Belgium, Milan, Moscow, and other places. Between 1939 and 1941, Xu travelled to Southeast Asia, holding exhibitions in Singapore and India. All the money from these exhibitions went to Chinese people who were suffering because of the war.

“Helen! Are you coming?”

“Yes! Where are we going, Dad?” Helen asked. She didn’t often get to spend time with her father these days. He was always working, trying hard to make enough money to support Helen, her mother, and her brothers and sister.

“We’ll be getting the rent (租金),” Mr. Resnick answered.

The rent was the only way they were surviving. Before the Great Depression (经济大萧条), Mr. Resnick had bought a house and rented it to three families. Where the Resnicks would be without that rent money now, Helen really couldn’t imagine.

Mrs. Miller gave them the money in dollar bills. Mr. Schmidt managed with a bag of coins. But the third family never had enough money. It had become harder and harder to accept their rent. But as Helen’s mother said, the money in Mr. Resnick’s hand by the end of today must be enough to last for the whole month.

Mrs. Katz opened the door. Mr. Katz and the two children were sitting at a table, waiting for Mr. Resnick. They all have such thin faces! Helen thought.

Mr. Katz gave Helen’s father the money he was holding. Mr. Resnick thanked him and turned to go.

“Mr. Resnick?” Mrs. Katz said before they could leave. “We haven’t eaten in two days.”

The two little kids began to cry. Without a word, Helen’s father put all of their rent money back on the table. Then he took out the rest of the money he’d collected that day and counted out two dollars.

“Helen,” he said, “Use this to buy food and bring it right back here.”

Helen ran all the way to the store. She chose cheap and good foods, like her mom would do. Two dollars bought such a lot! Helen carried the heavy bags back to the house. The kids cried with joy when they saw each favorite food. Mr. and Mrs. Katz laughed at that, and Helen thought it was their first laugh in a long, long time.

33Why does the author mention the Great Depression?

ATo present Helen’s wild imagination.

DHe was not satisfied with Helen’s shopping.

36What does the story mainly tell us?

AHard work brings good luck.BKindness shines even in difficult times.

Some of the most beautiful rivers in the UK are from underground springs, which create perfect conditions for wildlife to live. To understand how healthy the rivers really are, scientists keep watching them for numbers of species (物种) over time. This can show how well a habitat can manage stress such as rising temperatures, reduced rainfall and pollution.

Traditionally, researchers survey rivers by going out themselves and searching for plants, animals or signs of their presence (存在). This method works, but it takes much time and can miss some species not present during the survey. A new project called GeneFlow tries a new technology — environmental DNA (eDNA).

When a species — for example, a fish — moves through the environment, it drops bits of itself all the time, from dead skin cells to faeces (粪便). The DNA in these materials is known as environmental DNA (eDNA). If someone tests a sample (样本) of the water, these pieces of DNA can show the recent presence of the fish, though no fish is seen. This technology allows scientists to find species that we cannot see with our eyes, so that we can learn more about the rivers.

GeneFlow aims to explore the species in 10 rivers across the UK. Beyond information collection, it also aims to connect people with their local rivers. With instructions, members of the public have helped to collect water samples from chosen rivers.

Scientists are still studying the water samples, but the early results are promising: nearly 2000 species have been discovered so far, including protected species such as eels and water voles at many places. Several riverfly species — key signs of water quality — were also recorded.

37What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?

ATo list possible dangers to the habitats.

BTo describe the rivers’ health conditions.

CTo explain the importance of river surveys.

DTo introduce some beautiful rivers in the UK.

38What’s the problem with the traditional method to survey rivers?

AIt pollutes the rivers.BIt doesn’t work at all.

CIt wastes time finding rivers.DIt can miss hidden species.

39What is eDNA?

AThe DNA of a certain fish in the UK.

BThe technology of collecting water samples.

CThe technology of preventing water pollution.

DThe DNA of species found in the environment.

40What can we learn about the GeneFlow Project from the last two paragraphs?

AIt has found positive results so far.

BIt has protected species at many places.

CIts researchers have completed their study.

DIts researchers collected samples in person.

It is exciting to welcome a cat into your family, but it is also a huge duty. And you’ll expect a lot of changes in your life.     41

Most of us will bring home a kitten (小猫), once they’re around nine weeks old and stop drinking milk from their mum.     42     They are always running around, climbing curtains, and getting up to all kinds of tricks. Luckily, they also sleep a lot and can be cute.

It is a good idea to get a grooming (梳毛) brush. Getting your kitten used to a little grooming time each day will make life easier in the long run.     43     In this way, it will be easier to put it into the basket if you have to take it out.

If you are taking in an older cat, they will be calmer and need less care than a kitten. Still, they feel uncomfortable in the first few weeks after moving to a new house.     44     Make sure they have plenty of places to hide.

Whatever the age of the cats, prepare two litter boxes for each cat in the home, and these should be in some private areas, where there is not a lot of foot traffic.

45     Cats don’t like drinking water that is near their food. You also need to keep both bowls away from the litter box. Cats won’t want to eat or drink if they can smell their litter.

AWhat can you buy for them?

BAt this age, they can be highly active.

CThere are a number of things to be aware of.

DFor these older cats, the key is to respect their space.

EThey often fight bravely to help their mum hunt for food.

FImportantly, keep the food bowl away from the water bowl.

GSimilarly, use a cat basket as a bed choice within the home.

例文

Dear editor,

I am writing to suggest a good read. The book I’d like to recommend is The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway.

It tells the story of an old fisherman who fights alone against a huge fish in the sea for many days. Though he faces great difficulties, he never gives up.

I recommend this book for two reasons. First, it teaches us the value of courage and persistence. Second, the language is simple but beautiful, which makes it easy and enjoyable to read. It is also full of deep thoughts about life and the human spirit.

I hope you can recommend the book to more students.

Yours,

Li Hua
