There were very few customers, only two French women and an American man besides the four of us. In the corner, a piano player played Christmas music. He was writing a letter before his food came. Through the front door came an old French flower woman. No one bought any. The American man finished his meal and got up to leave. Putting on his coat, he walked over to the flower woman. “Merry Christmas! How much?” he smiled and said, picking out two bunches of roses. She said, “Two francs.” He paid the old lady. Then he sent the roses to my daughters and wished us a Merry Christmas. We were so moved that tears left our eyes. He released the love and joy that had been bottled up in our hearts by anger and disappointment. He gave us a happy Christmas.
