W: Wait for a moment. What does the poster on the window say?
M: Some clothes are discounted. Let's go inside and see if I can find some appropriate clothes
for us.
Text 3
M: Do you think the headmaster could see me before nine thirty?
W: He won't be in until eleven fortyfive.
M: Is twelve forty any good?
W: Yes, I'll write down the time.
Text 4
W: Can you reduce the price of this laptop?
M: It's already very cheap. Let's make it 6,000 yuan. That's as cheap as it can get.
W: All right, I'll buy this one. Can I pay using a credit card?
M: Sorry, you can only pay cash. We'll also include a laptop bag and a mouse for you.
Text 5
W: If the traffic weren't so bad, we would be home before nine o'clock.
M: Don't be worried. We couldn't fly home, anyway.
W: We'll be late for the Voice of China.
M: But we have no choice but to wait.
Text 6
W: Hi, welcome to Burger Palace. Can I take your order, please?
M: Yeah. Two bacon cheeseburgers and two orders of fries, please.
W: All right. Would you like anything to drink with that?
M: No, thanks. We've got sodas at home.
W: So you are going to take them home, right?
M: That's right.
W: OK. Your total is $18.
M: Here's twenty dollars. Keep the change.
W: Oh, thank you so much! Your order should be ready in about five minutes.

M: So, are you enjoying the performance?
W: Well, the costumes and the sets are splendid, but the acting is a bit stiff. What do you
think?
M: I think you are being a little critical. The actor in the lead role is fantastic. I suppose the
chorus could be a little better, though.
W: Do you know anyone in the play?
M: Actually, the woman playing Ophelia is a past classmate of mine.

M: That's only part of it. I absolutely adore the director. Every play he works on turns out
great.

M: Quite a few actually. By the way, after the play, there's always a big party for the cast and

Text 10
When Jackie Robinson walked onto Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, New York, on April 15, 1947,
he changed baseball forever. As the first African American to play in the Major League in modern
times, many believe he changed the country forever.
Robinson was born in 1919. He lived in a time when rules controlled what African Americans
could do. He was a top athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball. But playing for a Major
League team was off limits to Robinson because of his race.
Branch Rickey, president and manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, signed Robinson in 1947.
He believed that Robinson not only had the skills, but the courage to face the challenge of
becoming modern baseball's first black player.
It wasn't easy. Robinson sometimes faced shouts of laugh and disapproval from fans. But he
became a star, anyway. In 1962, he became the first AfricanAmerican player chosen to enter the
Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2005, he was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award
Congress can give to an American.
By breaking baseball's color barrier, Robinson opened the door for many to follow his
footsteps, not only in baseball, but in other areas of life as well. After he stopped playing the
game, Robinson worked as a manager for a coffee company. He wrote a newspaper column. He
also started a bank.
