W:No,not yet.But I think I’m going to take up singing.

W:Yes.It’s because I am good at singing.All my classmates say so.Besides,singing is quite interesting.
M:Well,what do your parents think about it?
W:They don’t quite agree with me.That’s the only trouble.
M:Have they got any other plans for you,then?
W:Yes,um...they want to send me to an Art College because they want me to be an actress.
M:Then what will you do?
W:Er…I haven’t decided yet.But I usually get my own way in the end.

W:We were invited to stay in my daddy’s friend’s in America.
M:What do you know about Katrina?
W:Katrina was the strongest hurricane in the history of hurricanes.When she hit early Monday on August
29,2008,it was about 3:30 in the morning.The storm lasted until about noon on Monday. The winds were very
strong,with winds of up to about 100 miles per hour.It was very frightening.
M:Were there any injuries?
W:Thankfully,no one was hurt in our area.
M:Can you say something about your trip back home?
W:Finally,on August 30,2008,we were on our way home from America.Our trip home was sad seeing houses with
roofs torn off.We had to drive slowly because the broken tree branches were everywhere.

M:Do you want me to be honest?
W:Of course.
M:I was bored to death.What a funny art form!I never want to do that again.
W:Huh,how can you say that? It was beautiful.You just saw one of my favorite operas.
M:I’m sorry.I know you like opera.But it just isn’t for me.I’d rather read a novel or watch a movie.
W:But you don’t know how to appreciate opera.That’s the problem.M:What you’re saying may be true.But listen.I know that story.Remember?
W:Yes,I know.You wrote a paper on the poem in the university.It was a medieval (中世纪的) poem,wasn’t it?
M:Yes.So I even know the story very well.But I thought the opera was boring.
W:But Wagner is a great artist!
M:I’m sorry.I just think the whole thing is showy (显眼的).The singing is much overdone.

M:Do you remember a time when people were a little nicer and gentler with each other? I certainly do.And I feel
that much of the world has somehow gotten away from that.We get lazy and in our laziness,we think that
something like a simple “thank you” doesn’t really matter.But it can matter very much.The fact is that no
matter how nicely we dress or how beautifully we decorate our homes,we can’t be truly elegant without good
manners because elegance and good manners always go hand in hand. In fact,I think of good manners as a sort of
hidden beauty secret. Haven’t you noticed that kindest, most generous people seem to be getting prettier? It’s
funny how that happens.But it does.Take the long lost art to say “thank you”.Like wearing a little makeup or
making sure your hair is neat,getting into the habit of saying “thank you” can make you feel better about
yourselves. Good manners add to your image!
