It was a market day. A man stood behind his table and was selling nuts.He had many
bags of nuts.Suddenly the man remembered that he must go to town,and there was one
problem:who would sell these nuts for him?
“Peter,”he turned to a boy and said. “Will you help me sell these nuts?”
“…Yes,I’m glad to,”answered the boy.“But for the first hour I want to get one nut.”
“Only one?This isn’t much！”
“And for the second hour,the double of it,that is,two nuts.”
“Just two?This isn’t much,either. And for the third hour?”
“Again the double,four nuts.And for every further hour you have to pay me twice the
nuts as the preceding hour.”
“This isn’t much！”said the man.“I will be back in five hours. Or maybe I’ll have
to stay in town a bit longer.Now sit here with my nuts！”

The man went away. Five hours passed and still the man wasn’t back. Soon it was getting
dark.The boy didn’t leave. He sat at the market for exactly 24 hours.
The next morning the man came back.He said to Peter,“Give me your pocket！I’ll

With the spread of computers,the Internet has been playing a more and more important
role in our daily lives.In recent years,the number of net users has been multiplying. Take
China for example；there are now millions of net users in the country,a great jump from
the 620,000 users recorded in 1997,when the computer industry was just beginning itsrapid growth.The number had grown to 79.5 million by the end of 2003, and about 11.5
million new users were recorded in the last half of 2006.In fact,China had more Internet
users than Japan by the end of 2002, jumping to second in the world after the United States.
It’s estimated China had the largest number of Internet users in the world by the end of
2007.Still,the current number is only 6.2 percent of the country’s total population,and the
majority of Internet users are people between the ages of 18 and 30.So the number of users
in China will continue to increase.
