W:Pink. It’s my favorite color.Look! How do I look in this new dress?
M:You look beautiful. This is a lovely dress and it’s the latest fashion.
W:Thank you.
M:But you’d better buy a pair of shoes to go with this dress.
W:Could you show me some blouses?M:What size?
W:I take a medium size.
M:How do you like this one? It’s nice and cheap. It’s only thirty-four dollars.
W:Have you got anything cheaper?
M:Sorry,I think that’s the cheapest.
W:May I try it on?
M:Yes,you can.The fitting room is right over there.
W:All right.I think I’ll take it.

M:Well,Mary,why do you look unhappy?
W:Oh,Bill,I just had a quarrel with Mr Thomason.
M:Mr Thomason? What on earth was it about?
W:Well,I have made three bad mistakes so far this week.Today I forgot to give him an important
message,so he got really angry with me.
M:But I don’t understand.You are usually careful and never make mistakes.W:I’m just so tired.I don’t know what I’m doing.
M:Why?Have you been going to bed late these days?
W:No,I am usually in bed at about 10.But I’ve been woken up at half past four every
morning. And then I can’t go back to sleep.
M:Why?
W:It’s my new neighbor, the milkman next door.He has to get up half past four and he always
turns the radio on loudly.
M:Ask him to turn it down then.
W:It’s hard.I don’t know him yet.
M:If you don’t want to see him, just write him a note.
W:Do you think it’s a good idea?
M:Yes,I do.I’ll help you write the note.
W:OK.Let’s try.

M:Emma, would you tell me about the weather in Scotland?W:Well, the weather is pretty cold there. Actually, most of Scotland is cold and often wet.I’m sure
it’s the coldest part of the British Isles.
M:It’s very cold in winter in the north of China, too. But it’s more of a dry cold. However,it’s my
favourite season. Summer is just too hot!
W:Well,I think you’re lucky to have a hot summer.Scotland’s summer is pretty miserable, wet and
cold.
M:Do you think people’s personalities are affected by the climate they live in?
W:Well,I think there’s certainly something in it,because when the weather is hot,I easily lose my
temper,but when it’s cooler,I feel much calmer.
M:If it’s raining,I always feel sad.I cry along with the weather!
W:Hmm,I agree.
Text 9
W:Have you ever been to Japan?I’m going there this fall.
M:Yeah,I was there last summer.
W:Really?Tell me about it.What was it like?
M:Oh,it was terrific.W:Where did you go?
M:Tokyo and Kyoto.I only had a week and a half.
W:What did you think of Tokyo?
M:Exciting, but not very attractive. All the buildings are gray and ugly. And it’s very crowded,of
course.
W:And how about Kyoto?
M:That is a fascinating place.I like Kyoto a lot better. It’s smaller than Tokyo. It’s not as
crowded. And it’s just generally more interesting.Well, there are lots of beautiful temples and
some really lovely gardens, and it’s also got an old palace.
W:Sounds great.I also want to buy a camera.Which city do you think is better for shopping?
M:Tokyo,I guess.It’s got more shops and a bigger selection.But it’s also more expensive.In
fact,it’s probably the most expensive city in the world.

here.We hope that you will be able to come again next year.Perhaps you’ll be able to stay longer
next time you come.A week is not really long enough,is it?If your school has five weeks’ holiday
next year, perhaps you will be able to stay with us for two or three weeks. We have been back at school three weeks now.It feels like three months! I expect that you are
working very hard now.I shall have to work hard next year when I am in Grade One.Tom and Ann
won’t be in Grade One until 2012.
They went for a picnic yesterday but I didn’t go with them because I cut my foot and I
couldn’t walk very far. They went to an island.Do you remember the island? That’s where all five
of us spent the last day of our holiday.
Yours,
