got married when she was 18 and she spent all her life taking care of her husband and the kids.
W:You mean she never had a job?
M:No,women were told that they could not have a family and career at the same time.

W:I know. The tax went up this month.
M:Does the bus still leave at two fifteen?
W:Two fifteen at Gate 11.You must be at the door by two, though. The driver usually begins
loading fifteen before it pulls out.

M:I just heard about something you may want to know.My friend’s grandma lives next door to an
old woman. She and my mother just mentioned that her eyesight is so bad.She had to give up her
driver’s license. That means she can’t drive any more.
W:Is her car very good? How much do you think she wants?
M:It’s really very good, only 43,000 miles on it and most of those came from her driving down to
New York each winter, but I don’t know the price yet.

Today I’m going to tell you something about manners in different countries.I think you
already know that people in different countries have different ways of doing things.Somethingthat is rude in one country may well be quite polite in another. For example,in Britain you
mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having some liquid food. But in Japan you
needn’t worry about making a noise when you drink it.It shows that you are enjoying it.But that
is considered bad manners in Britain. In Britain we try not to put our hands on the table at all
during a meal.In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table
throughout a meal. But it is in the Arab countries that we really must be careful with our
hands. You see,in Arab countries you mustn’t eat with your left hand. This is considered to be
very impolite. So,what should you do if you visit another country?Well, you needn’t worry. You
can ask the native people there to help you or just watch carefully and try to do as they do,not as
you do at home.
