Text 2 M:Jenny,it’s time for me to drive you to the airport or you’ll miss your plane. W:Coming,Dad.Do I need this heavy coat? It’s supposed to be warm in California all year. M:Take your overcoat. That’ll be enough. And don’t forget our gifts to Lisa’s parents. Text 3 M:I notice quite a lot of smoke is coming out of the chimneys of the factory near our school. W:Yes,it is.But I hear the factory has promised to take measures.Text 4 W:You’re suffering from a fever. I’d like you to take two of these pills three times a day. M:Is there anything else I should do? W:Yes.You should drink a lot of water and get a lot of rest. Text 5 M:Can I help you? W:Yes.I am trying to find a green sweater in XL. Text 8 M:Have you heard of Zhang Hua? W:You mean the university student who gave up his life in order to save an old peasant? M:Right. Some people think it wasn’t worth it. They think an old peasant’s life is not as valuable as a university student’s. W:I don’t see it that way.I think we should place others before ourselves. M:Yeah, most Chinese people think so. I’m afraid people in the West would weigh the situation and would only risk their lives if they thought it was important. W:Yes,it’s a matter of philosophy. Text 9 W:Oh,there you are!I was looking for you all morning. M:What’s the matter? W:Edward wanted you to attend a meeting, but you’ve missed it now. M:When was it held? W:From half past nine to a quarter to twelve. M:What was it about? W:Some new plans of the college library were discussed. M:I’m sorry I wasn’t told about it. W:What did you do there? M:We walked in the forest and picked wild flowers. It was very relaxing. Text 11 Can you imagine how difficult our world would become if all supplies of paper suddenly disappeared? Banks, post offices and schools will be forced to close. Food makers would not be able to cover or label their own products. There will be no magazines, books or papers. And we would no longer be able to write to our friends and relations. Those would be only a few of the troubles of paperless world.Everywhere we turn,we find paper. Without it,our modern world would come to a stop. Paper is the lifeblood of the industry, the bringer of news and the distributor of knowledge. It wouldn’t be much fun writing our letters or schoolwork on slates. Text 12 Nicky Logan is 13 years old,and she comes from the Australian Outback. She lives on farm with her parents, her brothers Martin and Ben,and 50,000 sheep. The Logan’s farm is in the“Outback”.A lot of Australia is“Outback”—it’s very hot and dry,and not many people live there. Sometimes Nicky and her family don’t see any other people for weeks. So how do Nicky and her brothers go to school?Well, they don’t go to school—their school comes to them,by radio and the Internet. They sit at home and talk to their teachers and classmates on the radio. Their classmates live on other farms and their teachers work at the“School of the Air”,in a place called Alice Springs. When the pupils have to do homework, they send it to their teachers by fax or the Internet. The“School of the Air” is only for younger students. So next year, when Nicky is 14,shehas to go to a school in Alice Springs. She is going to live at the school and visit her family during the vacations. “I’ m going to miss my parents and my horse,”she says,“but I still want to go. I want to study with other kids for a change.”
