Text 4
M:Where were you born,Lily?
W:I was born in Australia, but my parents brought me to New Zealand shortly afterwards.
Text 5W:What are we going to eat today?
M:What about Sichuan food? Some of my English friends studying Chinese here often enjoy it.
W:I’m tired of Sichuan food. It’s too hot. Are there any American restaurants around here?
M:Just ahead there’s a McDonald that will make you think you’re in the USA.

W:Oh,Tim!What happened to you?
M:It isn’t anything serious.
W:It’s serious enough for you to be here.
M:Just a little too much smoke.I’ll be back home this evening.
W:How did this happen?M:I had to go into a house that was on fire. There was still someone inside.
W:Did you get him out?
M:It was a little girl.Yes,I got her out.
W:But there was a lot of smoke.
M:Yes,a lot. I had some trouble breathing,so they sent me here just for the doctors to take a
look at me.
W:And now you tell me that it’s all part of the job.
M:Well,it is.You shouldn’t worry all the time.
W:But I do. I hope you’ll leave your job.
M:Leave my job? No,not because of a little smoke.I’m really all right.

W:Hello,George!I wanted to speak to you yesterday, but you weren’t at your usual place
for lunch.
M:No. I had a free day from the newspaper office because I worked so much overtime last week.
W:Oh,I see.You had a holiday.
M:Well! I stayed at home and looked after the baby.
W:What? You took care of the baby?Whose baby?
M:Oh,it was my sister’s baby. She wanted to go shopping in the morning,so I stayed at
home and did a lot of useful things.
W:Oh?
M:Yes,I mended my radio, washed a shirt and some socks, and cleaned out the drawers of
my desk.
W:I don’t call that a holiday.I wanted to ask you to the concert last night. The one at the
Town Hall near where we live.
M:That’s funny! My office called me in the afternoon and asked me to go and write an article
about the concert. I noticed that you weren’t there, but your friend Mary was.
W:Was she indeed?That’s very strange.Text 9
W:Are you busy tomorrow night? I’m going over to the Workers’ Club for volleyball if you’d
like to come along.
M:Isn’t that far away?
W:Not really. If you take the No.3 bus,you can get there in ten minutes. And if volleyball
doesn’t interest you,they’ve got a huge indoor swimming pool,a weight room,and an
indoor track. It’s a great place to meet people.
M:Now that you mention it,it would be nice to get away from the computer center for a
change, and I really should get some more exercise. Working up a sweat in a ball game or
the weight room would be nice. I’ve got so fat.
W:Of course. Look at me—you’re not the only one.In high school I had a lot of time to
do sports activities.I was never a great athlete, but I had enough time to play tennis with
my friends regularly, and during the winter I’d go skating almost once a week at a place
near my home. But after starting college all that extra time disappeared, because I was
always hitting the books. Now what little spare time you have must be used in doing
exercise. At least the club is open until 12 at night.
M:I guess it’s worth a visit. Did you say you’re going tomorrow night?
W:Yeah.
M:OK,I’ll come, too. How about meeting me in front of the cinema at eight, and we’ll
catch the bus there?
W:Sure,see you then.

Something interesting happened during the last Christmas shopping hour in London. A poor
man, who, though no fault of his own, found himself locked in a big store late on Christmas
Eve.
When he realized that,he decided to make the best of it.In the store,of course, there
was plenty of food, drink and bedding. There must have been radios and televisionsets, which no one could tell whether the man had ever used. When the store reopened, the
man was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seemed to
have been very happy.Everyone else was enjoying Christmas,so he saw no reason why he
should not do the same.Happily enough he let the police take him away.Perhaps he had a
better Christmas than usual. It was reported that the man would have to stay in prison for
seven days.It seemed, however, the judge(法官)was not going to do anything for the
store,as he said that the store had become better known through the story in the newspapers and
on television.

I get up every day at 7: 00 in the morning. School starts at 8:00,so I need at least an
hour to get ready. After I wake up I go downstairs and eat the breakfast prepared for me by
my mom, who wakes up even earlier than me.Even though it only takes me fifteen
minutes to eat breakfast,I spend about half an hour downstairs finishing my breakfast and
watching my favorite cartoons before going back upstairs to take a shower. After eating
breakfast, watching TV and taking a shower,it is usually about 7:45.This leaves me just
enough time to get dressed and ride my bike to get to school.
School lasts from 8:00 in the morning to 3: 00 in the afternoon, with a one-hour break
in the middle of the day for lunch. I buy my lunch every day in the school café and eat with all
my friends at the big table in the center of the café.We usually take about twenty minutes
to eat lunch and use the rest of the time to play basketball or soccer.
After school is over,I go directly to baseball practice from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.at the
field down the street from my house. After I get back home,I eat the dinner my mom has
prepared and then do my homework.I go immediately to bed after watching TV for exactly
one hour,at 9:00 p.m. every night.
