There’s nothing more fascinating than an inspiring, unputdownable read. Whether it’s the latest autobiographical
hit or gripping cult novel, finding a book you really connect with is always a cherished win.
As we say goodbye to our summer beach reads, we’ve already begun stockpiling a list of winter page-turners.
Top of the pile: Fiona McCallum’s new novel, A Life Of Her Own.
Labelled one of Australia’s master storytellers, Fiona McCallum is known for her heart-warming stories of self-
discovery and already boasts 10 bestsellers.
Her latest release is set to be no different, telling the uplifting story of overcoming adversity (逆境) and following
your dreams.
The tale centres on Alice Hamilton, a recently-graduated mature-age student who is looking to make her next
career move. Struggling to navigate her way through the job market, Alice is faced with the dilemma of finding a
financially-secure job that she enjoys — a feat that she soon discovers to be difficult — while maintaining a healthy
and committed relationship with her partner David.
Faced with the increasing pressure of unemployment, Alice interviews for a role at a major real estate agency in
Melbourne and lands the job. Excited about the prospect of the new role, yet filled with anxiety about having to make
new friends, Alice’s circumstances unfortunately take a turn for the worst.
Bullied and exploited (压榨) by her boss Carmel on a daily basis, Alice has to find the courage to face her fears,
prioritise her wellbeing and stand up for herself. However, the consequences of her actions lead her into further
trouble. As Alice’s life continues to spiral, an unexpected trip back to the country town she once fought to escape
provides her with a newfound perspective on her career path and relationship.

Samsung Electronics America announced that Galaxy device owners can make their own repairs to the Galaxy
S20 and S21 family of products, as well as the Galaxy Tab S7+, starting August 2nd.
Samsung is cooperating with iFixit, the leading online repair community, to deliver their Self-Repair program.
This program adds to Samsung’s continued expansions for convenient repair for consumers and helps them with

“Making replacement parts available is a key sustainability strategy. We’re excited to be working directly with
Samsung and their customers to extend the lifetime of their phones,” said CEO of iFixit.
Starting today, Galaxy device owners can replace the phone screen, back glass, and charging ports. In the
future, Samsung plans to expand self-repair to include more devices and repair options from our extensive product
portfolio (档案).
Furthermore, the program makes it easy for consumers to return their thrown-away parts for responsible
recycling, as the new display kits will come with a return label to ship thrown-away parts back to Samsung — at no
cost to the consumer.
In addition to the convenience of these new self-repair options, Galaxy smartphone owners have a choice on

Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis, according to
linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7,000 languages currently spoken
will be extinct by the end of the century.
Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害), with the result that by
the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct.
The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the
knowledge they represent.
“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Rachel, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen’s
University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions
where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Rachel. “It seems particularly cruel,” she says, “that
most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people.” Vanuatu, a South
Pacific island nation measuring 12, 189 km2, has 110 languages, the highest density of languages on the planet. It is
also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise. “Marty small language communities are on islands and
coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise,” she says. Others live on lands where rising temperature
threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.
In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL) in 2022.
Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “not only important for them, but for all
humanity”, said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in

A. Climate change is the only challenge for minority languages.
B. Half of all the languages spoken will be extinct in the future.

D. Poor education is the direct cause of disappearing languages.
13. Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To explain the main reason for language density.
B. To show the common features of endangered languages.
C. To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.
D. To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.
14. What is the aim of the IDIL?
A. Support migrants to access local education.
B. Discourage people from massive migration.
C. Protect the environment to reduce the temperature.
D. Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.

Have you ever set a goal for yourself, like getting fit, making honor roll, or being picked for a team? Like lots
of people, maybe you started out doing great, but then lost some of that drive and had trouble getting motivated
again. ____16____ It all comes down to good planning, realistic expectations, and a stick-to-it attitude. Here’s
what you need to do:
First, know your goal. Start by writing down your major goal. For example, “I want to’ make honor roll,” or “I
want to get fit enough to make the cross-country team,” or even, “I want to play in the Olympics” are all major
goals because they’re the final thing the goal ‘setter wants to see happen. ____17____ That’s how people get
things done. You just have to remember that the bigger the goal, the more work it takes to get there.
Make it specific. It’s easier to plan for and master a specific goal than an unclear one. ____18____ That’s
,
pretty unclear. Make it specific by defining what you want to achieve why you want to get fit, and by when. This
第7页/共15页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司helps you make a plan to reach your goal.
____19____ People often abandon their goals because their expectations are unreasonable. Part of staying
motivated is being realistic about what you can achieve within the time-frame you’ve planned. Competing on the
Olympic ski team is a workable goal if you are 15 and already a star skier. But if you’re 18 and only just taking
your first lesson, time isn’t exactly on your side.
Break it down. Making any change takes self-discipline. You need to pay constant attention so you don’t get
sidetracked. ____20____ For example, let’s say you want to run a marathon. If it’s February and the marathon is
in August, that’s a realistic time-frame to prepare. Start by planning to run 2 miles and work up gradually to the
distance you need.
A. Make it realistic.
B. It’s OK to dream big.
C. What if you keep slipping up?
D. Let’s say your goal is to get fit.
E. So how do you stay motivated and on track with your goal?
F. One way to make this easier is to break a big goal into small steps.
G. Finding the motivation to do it isn’t necessarily easy, but it is always possible.
