It was not until photographer Rita Nannini left New York that she grew fascinated by the city’s
subways. While living in Manhattan for some 15 years in the 1980s and early 1990s, Nannini only
commuted (通勤) on the one train-given the subway system’s bad reputation. But after relocating to
New Jersey for several years where subway is not an option, Nannini found that absence did make the
heart grow fonder — maybe even for pizza rats. During her visit back to New York, Nannini nodded,
noticingimprovements inthe subway’s facilities.
While Nannini was waiting for a train, a bench on the platform oppositecaught her attention due
to the ever changing faces and characters. They were people of different accents, colors and beliefs.
They were from all walks of life, a diverse mix of New Yorkers all there for their own different
reasons. Having learned the teenagers’ popular “End of the Line” challenge — boarding trains at
random and riding them until their final destination,Nannini decided to visit every first and last stop
across theNYsubway’s lines with herbeloved camera.
Nannini’s “End of the Line” experience saw her traveling some 665 miles across 26 routes in
New York city. She took over 8,000 photos of the final stations, as well as the communities they
served. In many cases, she rode the routes two or three times over to ensure she got “the shot”. “The
project really shows me how important the subway is, and how sustainable it makes our lives,” she
said.
“It’s often said that my photos showtheend of thelines —the last stops,” shesaid. “But theend
of the line is indeed the start for so many people. That made me think about who the people and the
communities that live at the two ends are and what it is that the subway means to them.”Nannini was
proud of her set of images directly challenging the traditions of story telling, which echoed both the
boredom and excitement of travel ontracks.
Nannini enjoyed taking her time, starting her challenge in 2013 and only shooting the final
photos last year. Her first monograph on the terminal stops of the NY subway was released in April
2023.
“When you drive in the suburbs, you don’t have those encounters,” she continued. “People enter
your lifeonthesubway. That’s what strikes memost onmy journey ontracks.”
24.Howdid Nannini find theNew York subway during her revisit?
A.It turned outfine. B.It was depressing.
C.It stillheld thesamebad reputation. D.It would beher onlycommutingoption.
25.Whatis paragraph 2mainlyabout?
A.Thediversity of New Yorkers’daily life.
B.Theinspiration forNannini’s subway shots.
C.Thepopularity of“End oftheLine” challenge.
D.Thechallenges ofNannini’s job as aphotographer.
26.What can we inferfrom Nannini’s “End oftheLine” experience?
A.Her wayof tellingstories is traditional.
B.Sheexpressed sympathy forthesubway riders.
C.Herphotography is highly expected bytheencounters.
D.Shefound life ontracks was moreinteresting than life onwheels.

Danone Portugal introduced a new yogurt named Juntos. For every pack of yogurt that a
person bought, he would donateyogurt to afamily inneed. Danone had done itsresearch.
Increasingly, people say they want to buy from brands that give them a sense of purpose.
Surely a yogurt that helped the needy would be appealing. But Juntos was a failure. Despite
sinking millions into a marketing campaign, Danone pulled Juntos from the market only months
after itwas launched. Now thesameproduct is simply marketed as atasty yogurt.
What happened? To find the reason behind Juntos’ failure, Lawrence Williams and his
colleagues did an experiment where they showed people some products and asked these people to
pick one option. They reminded some to focus on the “purposeful and valuable” aspect while
others were told to “enjoy themselves” and focus on “delight and pleasure.” They found that
participants who prioritized meaning preferred the less expensive product when compared with
peoplewho putpleasure inthe firstplace.
So why were meaning-seekers cheaping out?Lawrence Williams asked participants to explain
their decision-making to find out. He learned that meaning-oriented people were not thinking about
how the product they might buy could bring meaning to their lives. Instead, they were occupied
withwhat elsethey could dowith theirmoney.
I am all for people making wise and strategic financial choices. But cheap products can create
many problems. Inexpensive options often do not last as long as the higher-end ones. As a result,
we shop more often, which is ultimately worse for our wallets. Plus, that spending pattern can do a
greater damage to the environment. Thanks in part to fast fashion, people buy 60 percent more
clothing today than they did 15 years ago. The fashion industry alone emits more greenhouse gases
than international flights and maritime(海洋的)shippingcombined.
So before you dive into your wallet for some deals, try not to fix only on what you are
spending orsaving. Think carefully about what you are buying, too.
28.Whatis themain reason for thefailure ofJuntos?
A.It ignored marketing strategies. B.It priced itselfrelatively high.
C.It lacked a particularly good taste. D.It focused ondelight andpleasure.
29.Whatcan be inferred about meaning seekers?
A.They frequent high-end stores. B.They thinkproducts extendtheir lives.
C.They hesitateto make decisions. D.They make more purchases with money.
30.Howis Paragraph 4mainly developed?
A.By giving someexamples. B.Bylistingnumbers and data.
C.Byexplainingreasons. D.By making somecomparisons.
31.Whichis themost suitabletitlefor thetext?
A.Innovation: aProduct’s Life B.ToBuy ornot toBuy
C.Meaning seekers or Quality-pursuers D.Fast Fashion: aHit toYour Wallet

The conventional wisdom about insects has been that they are unthinking, unfeeling creatures
whose behavior is entirely hardwired (天生的). But in the 1990s researchers began making surprising
discoveries about insect minds. Some species of wasps (黄蜂) recognize their nest mates’ faces and
acquire impressive social skills. For example, they can infer the fighting strengths of other wasps
relative totheir ownjustbywatching otherwasps fight among themselves.
Given the substantial work on the complexity of insect cognition (认知), it might seem
surprising that it took scientists so long to ask whether, if they are that smart, could also be sentient,
capable of feeling. Since we have no direct window into the inner world of an animal that cannot
verbally communicate its thoughts and feelings, the question of whether insects are sentient remained
academic.
15 years ago, I performed an experiment in which we asked whether bumblebees could learn
about threat from their natural enemies. We built a plastic spider model with a mechanism that would
briefly trap a bumblebee between two sponges before releasing it. The bumblebees showed a
significant change in their behavior after being attacked by the robotic spider. Perhaps unsurprisingly,
they learned to avoid flowers with spiders and meticulously scanned every flower before landing.
Curiously, however, they some times even fled from imaginary threats, scanning and then abandoning
a perfectly safe, spider-free flower. Although this incidental observation did not constitute formal
evidence of an emotion-like state, it did open the door to the idea that such states might exist in
insects.
Some research suggested that insects might have positivestates of mind. Researchers discovered
that bees actively seek out drugs such as nicotine and caffeine when given the choice and even treat
themselves with nicotine when sick. Male fruit flies stressed by being robbed of mating opportunities
prefer food containing alcohol, and bees even show withdrawal symptoms when removed from an
alcohol-rich diet.
Why would insects consume mind-altering substances if there isn't a mind to alter? But these
suggestive hints of negative and positive mind states still fell short of what was needed to demonstrate
that insects are sentient.
32. Whatdoes theexampleof thewasps indicate?
A.Insects showsigns of intelligence. B.Insects can docomplex calculations.
C.Insects can socializeina skillfulway. D.Insects liveinhighly complex societies.
33.Whatdoes theunderlined word “meticulously”inparagraph 3probably mean?
A.Hesitantly. B.Casually.
C.Eagerly. D.Carefully.
34.Whatwas unexpected about the bumblebees’behavior in theexperiment?
A.They avoided flowers with spiders.
B.They settled onflowers despitethreats.
C.They might abandon spider-free flowers.
D.They might get scared away byother insects.
35.Whatdoes thetext mainly discuss?
A.What insects' various behavior can reveal.
B.Howinsects communicate theirthoughts.
C.Whatamazing powers insects possess.
D.Whetherinsects are capable offeeling.

When raindrops fall to the ground in summer, a familiar scent always follows. Many people call
this the “smell of rain”. However, rain is made up of odorless (无味的) water. So, where does this
smellcome from?
36 But it actually comes from wet soil. This special odor even has its own name:
petrichor (潮土油), which comes from apairof chemical reactions.
The pleasant smell has long been an interest of scientists since Australian scientists first
documented the formation of petrichor in 1964. According to scientists, some plants produce oils
during dry periods. 37
Yet, it’s the second reaction that creates the most petrichor. It occurs when chemicals produced
by bacteria in soil are released. 38 These bacteria break down and change into simple
chemical compounds, providing nutrition for plants. Meanwhile the process also produces geosmin
(土臭素), a compoundwith adistinct earthy aroma(香味).
Lots of animals are sensitive to geosmin but human beings are extremely sensitive to it. When it
rains after a long period of dryness, drops of water hit the ground. Geosmin is then released from the
surfaces. 39 And it finally gives raindrops their familiar scent. If it rains heavily enough,
geosmin willbe spread downwind, warning others ofcoming rain.
40 And thenext timesomeone mentionshow much they lovethe smell ofrain, you can
proveyour intelligence byexplainingwhere that smellcomes from.

第二节(满分 25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Alma, shy and quiet, started ninth grade in a high school in the center of the town. Never had she
imagined loneliness would wrap around her likea shadow.Soon shefound herself dreaming of her old
eight-grade class, which had been small, but warm and familiar. For her, this new school was much
toocold, unfriendly,and indifferent.
Each morning, Alma’s stomach twisted as she pushed through the heavy school doors. Students
brushed past her without a glance as if she were invisible. No one at this school seemed to care
whether she belonged or not. Though she was caring and kind-hearted, her shy voice was always
caught in her throat and her eyes were downcast when she tried to say something, which particularly
becamea barrier to friendship.
The few classmates did notice her existence only when they needed something — a pencil to
borrow, or favors that never returned. Tammy, her “so-called” closest friend, who was busy with her
speech competition, smiled only when she needed answers for a test or help with her homework. Day
after day, she moved through the halls like a ghost, unheard and unseen. Slowly, she began to believe
her thoughts weren’t good enough to be heard. So she continued to stay quiet and almost mute. This
pushedAlma closerto theedge.
Her parents grew increasingly worried about her,for they feared she would never make friends. Her
parents tried everything they could to help her fit in. However, it still didn’t work. Night after night,
she cried herself to sleep and was convinced that no one would ever truly care for her and love her
enough to beher real friend.
As that semester was coming to an end,Almadecided to take one lastchance. Withtrembling hands,
shesigned upfor theSpeech Club, though sheexpected nothing.
