Climbing,I once thought, was a very manly activity, but as I found my way into this
activity, I came to see that something quite different happens on the rock.
Like wild swimming, rock climbing involves you into the landscape. On the rock,I am
fully focused.Eyes pay close attention, ears are alert, and hands move across the
surface.Unlike walking,where I could happily wander about absent-mindedly,in
climbing,attentive observation is essential
As an arts student studying English literature,I discovered a new type of reading from
outdoor climbing.Going out on to the crags(悬出),I saw how you could learn to read the
rocks and develop a vocabulary of physical movements.Good climbers knew how to adjust their
bodies on to the stone.Watching them,I wanted to possess that skillful “language” .
My progress happened when I worked for the Caingorms National Park
Authority.Guiding my explorations into this strange pew landscape was Nan Shepherd,a
lady too.Unlike the goal-directed mindset of many mountaineers, she is not concerned
with peaks or personal achievement.Shepherd sees the mountain as a total environment
and she celebrates the Caingorms as a place alive with plants, rocks, animals and
elements.Through her generous spirit and my own curiosity,I saw that rock climbing need not
be a process of testing oneself against anything.Rather, the intensity of focus could develop a
person into another way of being.
Spending so much time in high and stony places has transformed my view on the adhesion
between us and the world.I have come into physical contact with processes that go way beyond
the everyday.Working with gravity, geology, rhythms of weather and deep time,I gain an actual
relationship with the earth. This bond lies at the heart of my passion for rock climbing.I return
to the rocks, because this is where I feel in contact with our land.
24.Why does the author like rock climbing?
A.It challenges her to compete with men.
B.It allows her a unique attitude toward rock.
C.It makes her feel connected with the earth.
D.It teaches her how to possess a new
language. 25.What does the writer find important
in climbing?
D.Perseverance
A.Balance. B.Concentration. C.Determination.
26.What does the writer learn from Nan Shepherd?
A.Every mountaintop is within reach.
B.Climbing goes together with nature.
C.The best climber is the one having fun.
D.You can not achieve high unless you change.
27.What does the underlined word“adhesion”in the last paragraph refer to?
B.Progress. C.Connection. D.Altitude.
A.Process.

Scientists have created a new tool that can know what you mean.It works by using an
Artificial Intelligence (AI)program to translate brain activity into words.Scientists say the
program could help people who can't speak because of a brain injury.
To record brain activity without surgery, scientists used an IMRI machine, which can record
the activity of the brain as it happens. To translate these recordings into words, scientists used an
AI tool called GPT-1 that predicts which word is most likely to come next, based on the
information that came before.Scientists first trained GPT-1 on lots of stories people had
told about their lives.Next, they trained GPT-1 to make connections between brain scans and
spoken words. The testing was done on three human volunteers. Each person spent sixteen
hours in an IMRI machine listening to stories. The machine created pictures showing which
parts of their brain were active.GPT-1 then used these recordings to make connections between
the ideas in the stories and the brain activity of the listeners.
Then came the test. The scientists played a brand new story.GPT-1 was only
given recordings of the people's brain activity. But the words that GPT-1 predicted were very
similar to the words in the story that the people were listening to.The words weren't exactly the
same, but they often carried the same meaning.
For example, when a person was listening to a story about a person who didn't have
a driver's license, the program came up with this,"She has not even started to learn to drive yet.”
The scientists say that GPT-1 is the first AI program to tum what people are thinking into
words without brain surgery. The system isn't something that is available outside the lab today,
mainly because of the size and cost of IMRI machines. But in the future,a similar method
could
help people who have lost the ability to speak because of an injury or
disease. 28.Why were the volunteers asked to listen to stories for 16 hours?
A.To predict the new stories. B.To awaken their curiosity.
C.To produce brain activity. D.To remember the words.
29.Which of the following best describes the test outcome?
A.Successful. B.Unexpected. C.Discouraging. D.Complex
30.What can be learned about this AI program?
A.It'll make patients learn to talk.
B.It'll reach consumers so0n.
C.It eases users' financial worry. D.It hasn't been put to use.
31.What's the best title for the text?
A.Scientists Train AI to Read Human Thoughts
B.We Don't Have to Worry About Brain Injury
C.GPT-1 Records Human's Brain Activity
D.The fMRI Machine Is Used for Brain Surgery

Whales are celebrated for being the largest and most intelligent creatures in the ocean. Now,
biologists have discovered that they also capture tons of carbon from the atmosphere,a service
with an economic value of US $1 trillion for all the great whales, according to a new
study published by the International Monetary Fund. The study points out that protecting
whales, normally viewed as a human good, also has a monetary motivation.
"The carbon capture potential of whales is truly incredible,”said the
report.“Our conservative estimates put the value of the average great whale at more than US S2
million, and easily over US S1 trillion for the current stock of great whales.”Whales absorb
carbon in their bodies during their long lives, some of which stretch to 200 years. When they
die, they sink to the bottom of the ocean, taking the carbon with them.According to the
study, each great whale traps around 33 tons of carbon dioxide on average.A tree during the
same period only contributes to 3 percent of the carbon absorption of the whale.
Whale populations are today a small amount of what they once were.It is estimated
that there are slightly more than 1.3 million whales in the ocean,a quarter of their pre-
whaling number of 4 to 5 million. Some species in particular,Like the blue whale, are only 3
percent of what they used to be."We can create financial methods to promote the restoration of
the world's whale populations,”said the report's authors."Rewards could help those who pay
significant costs as a result of whale protection.”
With the Paris Agreement coming into force next year and the effects of climate
change ever more widespread,we must prevent the harm to whales.Researchers analyzed that
unless new methods are put forward,it would take over 30 years to double the number of current
whales, and several generations to return them to their pre-whaling numbers."Society and
our own survival can't afford to wait this long,”they said.
32.What does the new study reveal about whales?
A.Their inteligence is unquestionable. B.They are money-makers for good.
C.Their survival is threatened by carbon.D.They are a natural climate
solution.
33.Why is a whale compared with a tree inparagraph2?
A.To highlight whales' carbon capture
potential. B.To illustrate whales are friendly to
the oceans. C.To indicate all matter regarding
green efforts. D.To emphasize the importance
of tree planting.
34.What can be inferred from what researchers said in paragraph 4?
A.Whale populations stay low. B.Climate change intensifies.
C.Whale protection is a priority. D.Our survival is
endangered.
35.What is the most suitable title for the article?
A.Protect whales to protect planet B.How to restore whale populations
C.Live in harmony with ocean giants D.Whales can guarantee our
survival

Mike licked the last of the mint chocolate chip ice cream. It was almost time to
leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the
big swim meet.
When his race came up,Mike was confident. He was strong and swift Mike climbed out
the pool, smiling. He had just won first place, making him the fastest boy in his age group.
“Congratulations, son,”his father said. His mom gave him a hug, even though he was
soaking wet.
A week later,it was time for another swim meet.Like before,Mike decided to enjoy
his favorite ice cream flavor.Mike remembered that the last time he had won a race,he also ate
mint chocolate chip ice cream first.Maybe he'd win again.
He took first place again in his race.Mike was feeling pretty good.As it turned
out,Mike decided to have mint chocolate chip ice cream before every one of the next few swim
meets. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of placing in the top
positions of every race he swam,Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn't admit it,but
all that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.
It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place —and then third
— and then last place in his races. The lucky mint chocolate chip ice cream had lost its magic.
On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him."Mike,we
all love ice cream, but it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it.Maybe it's time to
quit the sweet treats for a while, especially before you go swimming.”Mike unwillingly
