On a sunny morning, I walked casually through the park, savoring the gentle breeze, with the simple desire to
locate a quiet spot for a good book. Little did I know that an unexpected encounter with a naughty creature would

fictional characters. Suddenly, a strange sound interrupted me. Curiously, I glanced in the direction of the noise,

The squirrel displayed impressive flexibility, effortlessly jumping onto trees and leaping from branch to
branch. Children and bystanders couldn’t help but laugh at the spectacle of a grown adult chasing a squirrel. The
chase continued , and as I ran after the squirrel, I became both exhausted and awkward. The peacefulness of the
park transformed into a lively playground, with laughter echoing around us. The squirrel, seemingly aware of its
comical effect, increased its speed and finally vanished into thin air.
As I made my way back to the bench, my heart still raced from the pursuit. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of
companionship with the squirrel. It had reminded me to embrace the unexpected, to break free from routine, and

Initial conversations can have a huge impact on how relationships develop over time. People are often stuck in
the impressions they think they might have made the minute they finish speaking with someone for the first time:
“Did they like me or were they just being polite?” “Were they deep in thought or deeply bored?”
To find out whether these worries are necessary, we have conducted nearly 10 years of research. In our studies,
participants in the UK talked with someone they had never met before. Afterward, they were asked how much they
liked their conversation partner and how much they believed that their conversation partner liked them. This
allowed us to compare how much people believed they were liked to how much they were actually liked.
Time and time again, we found that people left their conversations with negative feelings about the impression
they made. That is, people systematically underestimate how much their conversation partners like them and enjoy
their company — a false belief we call the “liking gap”.
This bias (偏见) may seem like something that would occur only in initial interactions, but its effects extend
学科网(北京)股份有限公司far beyond a first impression. Surprisingly, the liking gap can constantly affect a variety of relationships, including
interactions with coworkers, long after the initial conversations have taken place. Having a larger liking gap is
associated with being less willing to ask workmates for help, less willing to provide workmates with open and
honest feedback, and less willing to work on another project together.
There are numerous strategies to minimize your biased feelings. One place to start is shifting your focus of
attention. Try to direct your attention to your conversation partner, be genuinely curious about them, ask them more
questions, and really listen to their answers. The more you’re zeroed in on the other person, and the less you’re
focused on yourself, the better your conversation will be and the less your mind will turn to all the things you think
you didn’t do well.
8. Why did the author carry out 10 years of research?
A. To dismiss national concerns. B. To check out a potential bias.
C. To enhance human communication. D. To develop harmonious relationships.
9. What is one effect of people’s liking gap?
A. Fewer chances of new projects. B. Underestimation of their ability.
C. Bad relationships with people around. D. Low willingness to interact with others.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Restate opinions. B. Deliver warnings. C. Give suggestions. D. Make a summary.
11. Which might be the best title for the text?
A. Liking Gap May Influence Work Performances
B. First Impressions Rely On Initial Conversations
C. People Probably Like You More Than You Think
D. How People Like You Matters Less Than You Assume

D
Medical artificial intelligence (AI) can perform with expert-level accuracy and deliver cost-effective care. IBM’s
Watson diagnoses (诊断) heart disease better than cardiologists (心脏病专家) do. Chatbots give better medical advice
to patients in place of nurses. Some forecast that medical AI will enter 90% of hospitals and replace as much as 80%
of what doctors currently do. Yet, as our recent research suggests, patients show a strong resistance to medical AI.
The reason, we found, is not the belief that AI provides lower care. Nor is it that patients think that AI is more
costly or less informative. Rather, resistance to medical AI seems to come from a belief that AI does not take into
account one’s specific circumstances. People view themselves as unique. By contrast, they think medical care
学科网(北京)股份有限公司delivered by AI providers is suited to treat an average patient but unsuitable to account for the unique circumstances
that apply to an individual. No wonder that medical AI providers are given a cold welcome.
There are a number of steps that care providers can take to overcome patients’ resistance to medical AI. For
example, if an AI provider is capable of tailoring its recommendation for whether to have a surgery to each
patient’s unique characteristics and medical history, patients would be likely to follow the treatment recommendations
of the AI provider. In addition, health care providers could also deliver individualized health care by explaining how
the algorithms (算法) work and sharing patients’ reviews with the media. Having a physician confirm the
recommendation of an AI provider should make people more willing to accept AI-based care. People are comfortable
using medical AI if a physician remains in charge of the ultimate decision.
AI-based health care technologies are being developed and employed at an impressive rate, providing better
medical services for the patients. But harnessing the full potential of them will require that we first overcome
patients’ doubt of having an algorithm, rather than a person making decisions about their care.
12. What made people resist the medical AI?
A. A sufferer’s temper ignored by medical AI.
B. People’s lasting trust in a human doctor’s ability.
C. The concern about its personalization in treatment.
D. The accuracy of the information from medical AI.
13. What can be a solution to patients’ resistance according to the author?
A. Treating sufferers as average patients.
B. Providing a more specific treatment.
C. Getting the algorithms prioritized in time.
.
D Keeping away from the influence of a physician.
14. Which word can replace the underlined word “harnessing” in the last paragraph?
A. Weakening. B. Storing. C. Destroying. D. Using.
15. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. Advantages of Medical AI
B. Potential Application of AI
C. How AI Replaces Nurses in Healthcare
D. The Challenge That Medical AI Faces

Rather, resistance to medical AI seems to come from a belief that AI does not take
into account one’s specific circumstances. People view themselves as unique. By contrast, they think medical care
delivered by AI providers is suited to treat an average patient but unsuitable to account for the unique circumstances
that apply to an individual.

For example, if an AI provider is capable of tailoring its recommendation for whether
to have a surgery to each patient’s unique characteristics and medical history, patients would be likely to follow the
treatment recommendations of the AI provider.

AI-based health care technologies are being developed and employed at an
impressive rate, providing better medical services for the patients.
速度发展和应用,为患者提供更好的医疗服务)”和下文“that we first overcome patients’ doubt of having an
algorithm, rather than a person making decisions about their care

Arthur was messy. He didn’t try to make messes, but he didn’t try to clean up much, either. There were always
small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And
he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the
house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She
picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She
often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic
book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that, Mom put
her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. Mom’s spot was nice
and clean. Arthur didn’t like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and
opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called.
“There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet
would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his
toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt.”

However, Mom was still reading and said nothing. Arthur wasn’t sure if she had heard him or not, so he
called for help again, but Mom still didn’t come. Then Arthur realized maybe it was he that could solve his problem
at that very moment. He quietly picked up the toy train and put it in the box. It only took a minute for him to put the
toy away, and now he wouldn’t have to worry about hurting his feet again.
“Mom?” said Arthur. “Tomorrow can you show me how to do the laundry so I can wash my socks?” “Of course,”
said Mom. “It’s nice to see you begin to learn to take care of yourself. I am always here to do whatever I can to help
you become a more independent boy.” Arthur felt better. He didn’t want to wait until the next laundry day to have
clean socks again. Maybe being neat wasn’t so hard after all.
