Smokeysmessage:“OnlyYOUcanpreventwildfires”,butfewerpeoplemayknowthatSmokeywasareal
Americanblackbearrescued,inthespringof1950,fromaviolentwildfireinNewMexico.
TheLosTablosandCapitanGapfires,whichburnedover17,000acres,werestokedby70mileperhour
windsthatmadethefireshardtofight.TheTaosPuebloSnowballcrewformedwhenthewarchiefcalledall
availablefirefighterstoputoutthebigfireintheLincolnNationalForest.Twentyfivevolunteersboardeda
schoolbusandbeganthelongjourneytofightthegrowingfires,fueledbystrongwindsandhightemperatures.

sinkslower,leavingbehindthecoralreefthathasgrownarounditsedge.Oftheabout440atollsintheworld,
