Wearing his bright red armband and speaking fluent Mandarin, from a distance 62-year-old Gao Tianrui
could be taken for any regular Chinese man.
But on closer inspection, things are not quite what they seem:Gao's real name is Terry Crossman and he
is from the United States. Having lived in Beijing for more than20 years, Terry Crossman has finally fulfilled
his Chinese dream: becoming a public security volunteer. Life as a “Xicheng Dama” has even made him an
online celebrity.
Xicheng Dama are volunteers, usually women in late middle-age, who roam( 闲逛) the streets of
downtown Beijing's Xicheng district. And now Crossman has joíned their club. He is seen giving tourists
directions, getting water for a baby and even helping a neighbor sell yogurt.
“I like helping others,” he said. “I live in the hutong and my neighbors and I usually help each other…
This is where I live, where my friends are and where I call home.”
Crossman became interested in Chinese culture as a teenager. At 18, he took a ship to Taiwan to learn
Chinese. On the ship the captain suggested that he should have a Chinese name.“He named me Gao
Tianrui,”he said.
Crossman and his family moved to Beijing in 1997. His parents separated when he was young, and he
lived in many different places in the US, so he never felt like he had a regular home there. “I had no
hometown in the United States,”he said. “Your home is where your things are. In this sense, Beijing is my
home.”
He can often be found chatting with local people, especially taxi drivers. During his leisure time,
Crossman teaches people English. Currently he is helping employees at a cafe near his home, telling them
how to say useful words such as“set meal” and “discount”.
In March, Crossman met Liu Xiaoxia, who helped him get into volunteering. “He asked me to give him
a red armband—the symbol of the volunteers.” Liu said, and Crossman is proud of his.
“In different periods I had different lives:married life, life with children and life alone,”he said. “Now I
just enjoy living here.”
24. What does Crossman need to do as a Xicheng Dama?
A. Pretend to be Chinese. B. Be a tour guide.
C. Chat with others. D. Help others.
25. Which of the following best describes Crossman?

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a frequent topic of conversation for most of us over the past year. As we
dreamt of indoor dining, vacations, and hugging our friends again, my friend Ana texted that her mother, living in
Brazil, had been infected by the coronavirus. I won’t go into details here, but the disruption to life in Brazil have
been especially upsetting considering their social and cultural norms(规范).
Ana is Brazilian, and I’m from the US. While living in New York City, we became fast friends despite the few
awkward cultural differences I learned to deal with. She was comfortable with intimacy; I preferred to keep my
distance. She liked the company of many; I liked the friendship of few. It was awkward for me to lean in for a quick
hug, only to be embraced then kissed on the cheeks. To this day, I’m not an excellent cheek kisser, but I try. She is
one of many people over the years who have educated me, in a way, about delighting in cultural difference.
I called Ana to check on her mother and I was primarily curious about how social and cultural norms have been
affected. It’s difficult, said Ana, because the necessary health regulations are opposite to “what we believe and
everything we know about living in a community and displaying feelings of love”, but she hasn’t given up hope. I
asked if the shifts made during the pandemic will change cultural norms. “Absolutely not,” said Ana. This is who
Brazilians are in nature and change doesn’t happen overnight. They spend a lot of time and energy investing in
relationships, and the deeply rooted social conventions won’t change quickly.
Over the years, Ana has shared many stories that emphasize the differences in our upbringing. I delight in our
differences, even if kissing on the cheek makes me uncomfortable. We find our commonalities, like talking with
our hands, being expressive, and valuing community. And we learn from our differences. COVID disrupted many
things, but through all of this, Ana said, we must constantly be adjusting, understanding, and doing what’s best for
our communities and the people we love.
28. Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word in Paragraph 1?
A. Adjustment. B. Disturbance.
C. Commitment. D. Preference.
29. What can we learn about Ann from Paragraph 2?
A. She is good at educating other people.
B. She prefers to stay alone in her own comfort zone.
C. She enjoys the close contact with others.
D. It took a long time for her to make friends with me.
30. Why doesn’t Ana think the pandemic will change social and cultural norms?
A. Because the Brazilians are born to be sociable.
B. Because the social conventions are easy to change.
【师大附中一模诊断考试·英语·第 5 页】
学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. Because the health regulations consist with her beliefs.
D. Because Brazilians rarely value investment in relationships.
31. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. My Attitude towards Friendship
B. Social and Cultural norms in the Pandemic
C. The Influence of COVID-19 on Life
D. My Acceptance of Cultural Differences

For humans, adapting to climate change will mostly be a matter of technology. More air conditioning, better-
designed houses and bigger flood defenses may help lessen the effects of a warmer world. Animals will have to rely
on changing their bodies or their behaviour. In a paper published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution, a team led by
Sara Ryding, a professor in Australia, shows that is already happening. In some species of Australian parrot, for
instance beak (喙) size has increased by between 4% and 10%since 1871. Similar trends are seen in species of mice
and bats growing bigger ears, tails, legs and wings.
All that fits nicely with evolutionary (进化 )的 theory. “Allen’s rule”, named after Joe Allen, who suggested it
in 1877, holds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger appendages (附加物) than those in mild
areas. Such adaptations boost an animal’s surface area relative to its body volume, helping it to get rid of additional
heal. Fennec foxes, meanwhile, which are native to the Sahara desert, have strikingly large ears, especially
compared with their Arctic cousins.
Ryding’s team combined data from different species in different places. Now that they have little in common
apart from living on a warming planet, climate change is the most reasonable explanation. Since any evolutionary
adaptation comes with trade-offs, it is unclear how far the process might go. Bigger beaks might interfere with
feeding, for instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow.
Honestly, studying a broader range of animals will help firm up exactly what is happening. For now, at least,
the increase is small, never much more than 10%. That may change as warming accelerates. Every little bit of
avoided future temperature increases results in less warming that would otherwise stay for essentially forever.
32. Why do some species grow bigger parts of their body?
A. They are following the new trends.
B. They have to adapt to warmer climate.
C. Scientists need them to do experiments.
D. Larger parts tend to help them feed well.
33. Where may warm-blooded animals have bigger body parts?
A. In mild areas. B. In hot places.
C. In the Arctic. D. In deserted regions.
34. What do we know about the change in animals from the last two paragraphs?
A. It comes at a cost.
B. Its cause is definite.
C. It happens in the same habitat.
【师大附中一模诊断考试·英语·第 6 页】
学科网(北京)股份有限公司D. Its process will end soon.
35. What can be a suitable tile for the text?
A. Living on a Warming Planet
B. Measures to Remove Heat
C. Pioneering Research on Animals
D. Evolution to Survive Heat

M: Yes,and this apartment is in good condition. Here is your lounge.
W: Where would we eat?M: There is this corner here or you can use your kitchen.
Come and see.
W: The kitchen is quite small.M: Yes,but it has everything, cooker, fridge, even a
dishwasher.

M: Let me show you the bedrooms. This is the smaller one.W: It's a good size though.M: Now,come into the other
bedroom. You can see the bathroom too.
W: Yes,it is very nice but I will have to ask my friend first and we will come together. I understand it is eight

学科网(北京)股份有限公司When I came to the U. S. , I was only thinking about being a carpenter. But I could not read the newspaper, and I
could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So I entered the City College to take
English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college, because no one in my family
ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you're 15 years old in my country, you finish school
and then you learn a trade, and that's exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old I learned how to be a carpenter.
A year later I came to America. Luckily I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes,
business classes, and history classes, and I became a full-time college student. And today, when I look back, I'm so
happy because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden I started making money because I was
really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I
learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well.
