Growing up, Miriam Armendariz Piccolo helped her mom in the kitchen, especially when it came time to make
picadillo (什锦肉糜). Piccolo’s favorite dish — a combination of ground beef, potatoes and chile sauce. Piccolo says
the flavors of this dish taste like home to her.
As with many mother-daughter relationships, Piccolo and her mom did not always agree. Clashes usually
resulted from cultural differences — the traditional culture in Mexico, where the family moved from, and the more
progressive culture in their new home of Oregon, she said.
But regardless of any disagreemnents, Piccolo knew that when her mom made picadillo, she was making it for
her, because her brother and dad weren’t fans. Coming home from school to this meal meant that her mom had been
thinking about her and that they would share the meal together.
As much as Piccolo loves picadillo, she hadn’t made it on her own until recently.
“I honestly didn’t really know how to make it because I never got the recipe from my mom,” said Piccolo, who
now lives in Little Rock, Ark. So, when she came across a video of picadillo on TikTok, she decided to attempt to
make it herself. Her aunts also gave her some tips.
It wasn’t so much about how the dish tasted in the end, Piccolo said. “I wanted to show my aunts that I’m stillcarrying on for my mom after she died, that I still got her memories and her skills and I’m bringing them with me,”
she said.
Piccolo’s picadillo turned out to be delicious. She now plans to make it for family, friends and herself and
encourages others to try the recipe.
“This is going to be a good, hearty dish,” Piccolo said, “It will fill you up knowing that it really was made with
love.”

Chinese society, basically agricultural, has always laid great stress on understanding the pattern of nature and
living in harmony with it. The world of nature was seen as the visible expression of the workings of a higher power
through the interaction of the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang. As Chinese art developed, its purpose turned to
the expression of human understanding of these forces, in the form of painting of landscapes, bamboo, birds, and
flowers.
Particularly in early times, art also had social and moral functions. The earliest wall paintings referred to in
ancient texts often described merciful emperors, officials, and their evil opposites as examples and warnings to the
living. Human relationships have always been of great importance in China, and a common theme of figure
painting is that of gentlemen enjoying staying together or of the depressing partings and infrequent reunions.Among the typical themes of traditional Chinese art, there is no place for war, violence or death. No theme would
be accepted in traditional Chinese art that was not inspiring, noble, or refreshing to the spirit.
In the broadest sense, therefore, all traditional Chinese art is symbolic, for everything that is painted reflects
some aspect of what the painter is aware of. Bamboo suggests the spirit of the person, which can be bent by
circumstance but never broken. The dragon is the wholly kind-hearted symbol of the emperor; the crane (鹤)
symbolizes long life; and paired mandarin ducks symbolize wedded loyalty. Popular among the many symbols
drawn from the plant world are the orchid (兰花), a symbol of purity; the plum blossom (梅花), which comes out
even in the snow and stands for uncontrollable purity, in either a revolutionary political or a spiritual sense; and the
pine tree, which may represent either survival in a fierce political environment or the unconquerable spirit of old
age.

To adapt to climate change, some flowers are darkening their color to protect themselves from the suns
radiation, new research shows.
The study suggests that over the past 75 years, the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flowers have
increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧层). The flowers won’t look any
different to humans, but insects consider the higher levels of UV pigments as a darker color, which could be
confusing when they try to find out colorful flowers to land on.The UV-absorbing pigments in flowers work like sunscreen and protect sensitive cells from harmful radiation,
Matthew Koski, a plant ecologist at Clemson University, says. He and his team hoped to determine if changes in
pigments were a result of environmental change-and if so, what are the plants responding to? The team collected
dried, pressed plants across North America, Australia and Europe. In total, they studied 1, 238 samples from 42
different species dating back to 1941. Then, using a UV-sensitive camera, they photographed flower petals from
each species. Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level data from the
time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time.
The researchers found that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result of the flowers structure.
Flowers with open, exposed pollen had more UV-absorbing pigments when ozone levels were low and radiation
was high. But flowers with pollen surrounded by the petal responded to temperatures, not ozone levels.
As climate change continues to intensify, these changes in flowers color can affect plant-insect interactions.
When the whole flowers get darker, insects might miss the flowers entirely. “This has a negative influence on plant
reproduction,” Koski says.
