The Summer Journalism Academy at Boston University offers high school students the
chance to enhance their journalism skills and prepare for college. The academy provides two
options: an on-campus program lasting three weeks for students with journalism experience, and
a learn-from-home online program lasting two weeks for all experience levels. For students
interested in photography, a special photojournalism track is available in both options.
New for 2024, on-campus students will have the opportunity for their stories to be

radio reporting, media law, and studying journalism in college. On-campus students also visit city
newsrooms, such as WBUR public radio and the Boston Globe, gaining invaluable real-world
experience and networking opportunities.

My birth was a little more dramatic than the standard way a baby enters the world. Within
minutes of coming out, I was moved away into another room while doctors gave my parents the
difficult news: I was born missing my left hand. I’m sure it was quite shocking for them. An
entire hand was just…not there?
Indeed, that announcement of my limb (肢体) difference would come to define the rest of
my life, and it might have been a disaster if it hadn’t been for what happened next. I’m told that a
nurse bundled (捆绑) me up, took me back into the room, placed me in my mother’s arms and
instructed: “You will take her home. You will love her. You will raise her like you would any
child. You will treat her as normal.”
My parents took that words seriously, and for the most part, it was great. I played sports,
acted in theater, excelled in school, participated in student government and had playdates with
friends. While I did get some stares and “polite” questions about my disability, I am lucky
because I wasn’t made fun of for my limb difference.
That fact that I was different hit me hard my first day of high school. I was 13, an age whenkids are already very self-conscious. I remember getting on the school bus and one of the other
kids stared just a little too long at my left arm. The staring unnerved (使感到不安) me in a way it
never had before, and I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand, so I slipped it into my pocket. I told
myself that I’d just hide it that one day, while I was trying to make friends. But one day of hiding
turned into a week, which turned into a month, which became years — 25 of them to be exact.
I spent the next two decades keeping my limb difference hidden at all times. I’d keep it in
my pocket, cover it with extra-long sleeves or hide it behind bags or underneath jackets.
Everyone I shared this with — friend, co-worker or boyfriend — took it well and said kind things
like, “You shouldn’t hide it” or “It’s no big deal.” But their words didn’t matter to me.
Interestingly enough, it was a date that convinced me to stop hiding my limb difference.
When I was 38 years old, exhausted of hiding and so lonely, I met someone special. The
combination of me finally feeling ready to unhide and his willingness to go through the unhiding
process with me was exactly what I needed. For the first time in my life, I allowed someone to
really hold my limb, look at it, take pictures of it, touch it, love it — love me. From that point on,
I saw my limb difference as something unique and beautiful about me, something that should be
shown, not hidden.

How AI oversight (监管) affects human decision- making is an important question in a
world where AI plays an ever-larger role in everyday life. Car drivers, financial traders and air-
traffic controllers already see their decisions overruled by AI systems put in place to rapidly
correct poor judgment. Doctors and judges could be next.
Mr. Almog believes“ tennis is one of the most visible settings where final decision rights are
given to AI”. So, he and his colleagues have studied whether tennis judges could correctly call
balls in or out for nearly 100,000 points played in some 700 matches worldwide, both before and
after the introduction of the hawk-Eye ball-tracking system in 2006. The AI system uses between
six and ten cameras positioned around the court to create a three-dimensional representation
of the ball’s movement. This can then be presented on a screen visible to players, audiences, officials and TV viewers. Players can use it to appeal against human decisions, with the AI’s
judgment considered final. Bad calls from the judges are now often overturned.
The latest analysis showed that the introduction of hawk-Eye oversight has resulted in a
remarkable 8% reduction in mistakes made by human officials. Most of the improvement came
during the multi-shot rallies (多次击球) that followed a successful serve (发球) and return.
However, when the researchers studied serves in particular, and especially in cases where the
served ball landed within 20mm on either side of a line, they were surprised to see the table was
turned. Before hawk-Eye, judges were more likely to call a serve out when it was in while
afterwards they were more likely to wave through balls that were actually out.
Such a shift is easily understood. Human officials prefer less bothersome, overlooked faults
and reputationally safer choices, despite resulting in more errors. Tennis, with clear evidence of
whether a decision was right or wrong, offers a highly simplified model for AI oversight. But
many of the same tendencies will be at play in fields like medicine and law, says Mr. Almog, and
should be considered seriously before AI is allowed to overturn human decisions. If AI oversight
is used in these fields, judges, for example, may prefer to under-accuse and doctors, on the other
hand, might give over treatment.
46. Why does the author mention professionals in different fields?
A. To show people’s preference for AI systems.
B. To illustrate people’s different opinions on AI.
C. To highlight the increasing impact of AI oversight.
D. To stress the challenges of AI’s correcting poor judgment.
47. What can be inferred about the hawk-Eye ball-tracking system?
A. It leads to conflicts between players and judges.
B. It helps guarantee the fairness of a match.
C. It involves complex technical operations.
D. It simplifies the flow of the match.
48. In what situation will judges’ error rate increase after applying the AI system?
A. When the served ball hits the net. B. When players serve within the lines.
C. When players make multi-shot rallies. D. When the served ball is a little off the lines.
49. What is Mr. Almog’s attitude towards introducing the AI system into the medical field?
A. Cautious. B. Supportive. C. Neutral. D. Contradictory.
50. Why does the author structure the text with tennis as the primary example?
A. To criticize technological overreach in non- medical domains.
B. To emphasize entertainment value for reader engagement.
C. To contrast sports with more complex fields where’ AI is inapplicable.
D. To establish a controlled scene where decision outcomes are measurable.
D
Progress is something that everyone looks forward to, whether in personal life or in society.
It represents our ability to change and improve the way we live. Progress is often linked to better
ways of doing things. However, this idea of progress holds true only if we embrace technology
and continuously seek more efficient ways of doing things.
Yet, for many people, especially those who long for the “good old days”, progress inevitably
comes with sacrifices. With the rise of new technology, efficiency has greatly improved.Communication, for example, has become much more efficient. Today, people can connect with
each other instantly, no matter where they are in the world. With just a click of a button, we can
talk or even see each other without leaving our homes. Personal visits, where we spend time
together in real life, have become less common. With mobile phones and tablets, people often no
longer make the effort to visit friends and family in person, even though face-to-face interactions
hold unique value in building closer relationships.
Another area where progress brings both benefits and challenges is in mass production.
Factories today are much more efficient, thanks to machines and automation. This has allowed
goods to be produced in large quantities with greater accuracy than human hands could ever
achieve. However, the downside is that this efficiency often comes at the cost of the “personal
touch”. Many items that were once handcrafted are now produced in factories. While mass
production allows supply to meet demand quickly, it often leads to a decrease in quality.
Handcrafted items, for example, are unique and full of character, but mass-produced versions
lack individuality and the same level of craftsmanship.
Despite these challenges, it is important not to view progress from a one-sided perspective.
In fact, progress has also allowed tradition to survive. Modern technology can help preserve old
products and techniques, ensuring that traditional crafts are not lost. Through new technology,
many old products can be revived and brought back to their original state.
Ultimately, it is people’s attitude towards progress that determines the influence technology
has on society. Technology itself is flexible — it can be used in various ways depending on how
we choose to apply it. The greatest challenges of progress come from those who are unwilling to
adapt their mindset and embrace new ideas. When we use progress in a way that fits our needs,
we can create a new future while still respecting the past.
51. According to Paragraph 1, what is necessary for progress to occur?
A. Rejecting new ideas. B. Holding on to traditional ways.
C. Pursuing comfort over innovation. D. Accepting technology and advances steadily.
52. The examples in Paragraph 2 illustrate____________.
A. efficiency improvements often come with a price
B. technology presents few significant drawbacks
C. the “good old days” offered greater efficiency
D. face-to-face interactions are unnecessary
53. What does the author say about mass production?
A. It has lacked great accuracy. B. It has increased product costs.
C. It has reduced individuality in products. D. It has entirely replaced handcrafted items.
54. What is the author’s view on the relationship between progress and tradition?
A. Progress often destroys tradition. B. Progress can help protect tradition.
C. Progress weakens traditional values. D. Progress and tradition cannot exist together.
55. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Technology must be applied in a fixed manner.
B. Progress should be adapted to meet societal needs.
C. People tend to look back on the past with deep regret.
D. The impact of technology depends on people’s attitude.第四节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
I’m lucky enough to have come from a family of mountaineers, so I have been climbing for
as long as I can remember. But it’s particularly thanks to my father that I started tackling serious
peaks at such a young age. When I was twelve years old, we travelled together to Alaska to climb
Mount Denali, which is the highest peak in North America.
The following year, I joined a youth expedition ( 探 险 ) to Africa to climb Mount
Kilimanjaro. After this, I went on to climb tough peaks in Australia, Argentina and Russia, each
time with a different team. Most times the difficulty was in finding sponsors willing to help fund
my trip.
In December of the year I turned 19, I headed out to Mount Vinson in the Antarctic. This
turned out to be the most challenging expedition I had done so far. First there was the long,
demanding journey down to the ‘frozen continent’. We took a flight to southern Chile and then
caught a cargo plane (货机) on to the Antarctic, with no heating, real seats or windows. Then
during the actual climb my hands froze and I was in a lot of pain. Still, this experience was like a
pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The colors of the ice, air and sky there were so pure
without the pollution we have got so used to everywhere else.
By this time, I had gained a lot of experience and felt I was ready for ‘the big one’, Mount
Qomolangma. It stands at 8,848.86 meters high and is not only the highest mountain on Earth but
possibly the most unforgiving, too.
Since returning from Qomolangma I’ve been giving a series of talks and presentations on
my expeditions. I hope more than anything that they will inspire other young people to follow
their dreams. I had taken 68 flights along my journey to reach the seven summits (顶峰). But I
never doubted what I was doing. I truly believed that one day I was going to stand on the top of
the world!

73. 作文二:(满分25分)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Jin, a senior 3 student in our city. Knowing the city is looking for volunteers for
hospitality work for the delegation from Muscatine High School during the winter holiday, I am
writing to apply for the post advertised on the Internet.
I’m convinced I have the right qualifications for it. For one thing, with fluent oral English, I
have no difficulty in communicating with foreign visitors. For another, not only am I familiar
with the history and traditions of our city, but also I have strong affection for them, which
enables me to provide visitors with more professional service. In all, I feel proud to promote and
spread our fine culture.
Should you take my application into consideration and give me a chance, I would be grateful.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Wish all my best regards.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Jin
