Dear Mr. Johnson,
I am writing on behalf of the school’s Student Union. We are currently hosting an English speech competition
with the theme of “Education for Innovation”. The final round of the competition will be held from 9 am to 12 pm
on November 12th in our school’s lecture hall.
The competition started in October and has gone through two rounds of competitions. Finally, 12 contestants
from over 100 participants have advanced to the finals.
Each contestant will have a 5-minute speech during the finals. As a judge, you are expected to listen to all the
speeches, record the strengths and weaknesses of each contestant, and discuss with the other judges to determine
the final rankings.
We believe that your presence as a judge will add great value to the competition. If you are available on the
day of the competition and willing to serve as a judge, please contact us at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for your time and attention. We look forward to hearing back from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
President, Student Union

One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head buried in her arms. I walked across the street
and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. “Oh, nothing,” came a soft reply. “I am
just too short.” The coach told her that at 5’5” she would probably never get to play for a top ranked team—much
less offered a scholarship—so she should stop dreaming about college. She was heartbroken and I felt my own
throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it yet.
She lifted her head from her hands and told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. “My father said
they just did not understand the power of a dream.” “Crace,” I said, “What your father told you is right. Nothing
could stop you except one thing– your own attitude.” Looking directly into my eyes, she said, “You’re right. I’m
not going to let this stop me.” She got up and walked back towards the court. I watched as she picked up the
basketball and began to shoot again. She continued to work hard and believed in herself. In the end, she received a
full scholarship to play college basketball and became one of the best players on her team. She made me firmly
believe if the dream is big enough, the facts don’t count.
